In the last decades one of the main engines of foreign trade growth has been innovation, the process of embedding knowledge in production processes. The purpose of this paper is to supply evidence favoring the hypothesis that innovation contributes positively to export performance when we control for endogeneity and selection bias by means of instrumental variables and Heckman selection model. The analysis is based upon a sample of firms from the Enterprise Surveys by the World Bank for Latin America and Eastern Europe. Evidence support the existence of a behavior pattern among firms in both regions. Size, age and foreign capital share have a positive influence on export decision. There is also a positive relationship between innovation and the likelihood of firms becoming exporters. Based on Heckman procedure, we also find evidence that innovative firms are more likely to become exporters but once they become exporters, the export intensity (relative to sales) affect negatively the result, only to Latin America countries.

The analysis of the domestic content of exports has called the attention of a number of authors in the last years, with the growing importance of global value chains. As long as manufacturing production is increasingly fragmented between several countries and firms, the country responsible for final goods exports may have a small share in its added value. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the evolution of domestic content of exports of the main economies of Latin America and Asia between the early 1990’s and late 2000’s, by mean of a especially designed measure and assess their degree of productive integration in the value chains.

The paper asks whether the creation of Mercosul has resulted in any increase in the exports technology intensity of its member countries and whether it has resulted in an increase of its exports. For that purpose, the authors have utilized an indicator of export technology intensity. The first result was that the technology intensity of intra-regional exports increased much faster than to the rest of the world. Second, the increase of technology intensity of intra-regional exports was strongly correlated to the bigger degree of concentration, which was the result of the growth of the automotive supply chain.

This paper intends to compare the technological intensity of Latin American and South-Southeast exports in the last three decades. In this period exports from Asian countries increased at a much higher speed than the one observed in Latin American countries. The main reason was the higher and increasing ratio of high-tech goods in Asian exports. The main contribution of this article is to build an indicator of technological intensity that allows to adequately measure the knowledge content of exports. This indicator has been calculated for all countries in the present sample for the period 1983-2008, based on COMTRADE-WITS data. The results show that Asian technological intensity is greater than that for Latin American countries. It has also been correlated to the exports growth rate for 1983-2000 and 2001-2008. In the first period, there is a positive relation between the two variables, with China and Hong Kong as outliers. This relation becomes negative in the second period thanks to the dramatic increase in commodities prices.
