    Abstract: Este artigo apresenta uma pesquisa sobre os processos de formação de palavra na LIBRAS. Os parâmetros (configuração de mão, direcionalidade, ponto de articulação movimento, localização, expressões faciais e corporais), que também podem ser morfemas, compõem sistemas complexos de desinências que estabelecem tipos de flexão verbais: concordância para gênero, para pessoa do discurso e para locativo, ou são afixos que se justapõem à raiz verbal ou nominal. Portanto, em relação aos seus processos de formação de palavra, a Libras é uma língua flexional, embora tenha também características de língua aglutinante, que podem ser percebidas a partir da formação de sinais pelos processos de composição e incorporação

    Abstract: Este artigo traz trechos da biografia do abade l'Epée, escrita por um professor surdo do Instituto para surdos de Paris, Ferdinand Berthier, em 1840. Apesar de enaltecer a figura do abade, criador da primeira escola para surdos na França, Berthier tece críticas ao método de l'Epée, uma vez que, segundo ele, em nome do ensino da escrita correta eram realizadas deformações na linguagem de sinais, modificações que acabavam por torná-la estranha aos próprios surdos. Apesar de escrito há dois séculos o texto de Berthier traz discussões que ainda hoje estão presentes entre os educadores, nas quais o tema central é a língua a que os surdos devem ser expostos no processo educacional. A polêmica língua de sinais versus língua oral apresentava-se, naquela época, como hoje, como o centro das discussões na educação dos surdos

    Abstract: O objetivo do presente trabalho é oferecer uma introdução às reflexões sobre verdade e ciência a partir da abordagem de textos literários, promovendo uma interlocução entre arte e ciência, entre literatura e metodologia da pesquisa (em especial, em educação). Inspirado por uma poesia de Drummond, um conto de Machado de Assis e um romance contemporâneo, de autoria de Lia Neiva, o texto aponta a literatura como forma de se abordarem temas complexos das ciências, como a noção de verdade e realidade, com estudantes de graduação. Introduz, ainda que de modo breve, uma interlocução com produções artísticas variadas – desde imagens com ilusões de ótica até filmes e seriados televisivos – no intuito de tornar as experiências em metodologia de pesquisa mais dinâmicas, mais atraentes e esclarecedoras. A exemplo do conto Cinderela que, ao ser recontada por surdos adultos, universitários, sobrevive com o título de Cinderela Surda. A literatura produzida por surdos usuários da língua de sinais evidencia sua inserção nos contos acrescentando a história de sua educação e a história do nascimento das comunidades surdas. Paralelo traçado na forma como o príncipe surdo aprende língua de sinais através de um professor ouvinte sinalizador e Cinderela (no caso plebéia) apropria-se da língua no contato com surdos

    Abstract: While fathers seldom say "I love you" to their son(s), there is also acknowledgment that sons rarely say it to their father. Confessions of love are like notes in a melody of previous affirmations, so what is it like for a son to say it, especially if large parts of his life are spent in "connective avoidance" with his dad? Writing on the (im)possibility of eventually saying "I love you", just before he died, I offer a "blissfully poetic" account of the experience of saying it. I also reflect on the lingering significance it has had for my experience of loss and bereavement. Although this text offers no easy formula, it ends by showing what a text of bliss might eventually look like for a son in recovery. Addressing the questions, so what? And, now what, then? implications beyond the self are also considered

    Abstract: While phrases such as ‘Capitaine Crounche’ and ‘beurre d’arachide’ are familiar to, and easily taken for granted by, most English Canadians, who tend to encounter linguistic duality in their daily lives in a number of ways, the politics underlying such seemingly harmless words are significant. Indeed, no other issue has played as central a role in Canadian social and political development as has language, with French-English linguistic tensions and considerations affecting numerous aspects of Canadian life, including foreign policy, the awarding of government contracts and indeed, the labelling of food packaging. While much public and scholarly attention has been paid to the language issue and the francophone population of Québec, less has been paid to language and francophones outside of the main concentration of Canada’s French speakers.     Abstract: This essay deals with the notion of orientalist discourse in Lord Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Concentrating on the dialectical attitudes towards the "Orient" in Byron's poem the writers try to show, through a contrapuntal textual analysis, how signs emerge of a somewhat stereotypical and often monolithic Orient. It is argued that the work's claim on the authenticity of the representations of the East is a subtle textual strategy. This seems to be true despite the existence of seemingly more favourable views towards "Orientals", especially in the footnotes, compared to Turkish Tales. Central to the study is the idea that similar discursive practices also seem to influence most of Byron's critics, which include contemporary scholars who have conducted numerous forms of textual analysis through differing theoretical approaches

    Abstract: In her article "The politics of gender" Elaine Hobby gives a clear image of the confusion evoked in modern mentality by the juxtaposition of Renaissance literature and history. The romantic scenes portrayed in the wonderland of Renaissance poetry seem uncompromisable with the bare facts of historical record. As we contemplate the shadows obscuring the male permeated poetic language of the age however, we do discern spots of light illuminating the overall picture.     Abstract: The largely unregulated early years of Canadian radio were vital to development of broadcasting policy. The Report of the Royal Commission on Radio Broadcasting in 1929 and American broadcasting both changed the direction of Canadian broadcasting, but were mitigated by the early, largely unregulated years. Broadcasters operated initially as small, independent, and local broadcasters, then, national networks developed in stages during the 1920s and 1930s. The late adoption of radio broadcasting policy to build a national network in Canada allowed other practices to take root in the wake of other examples, in particular, American commercial broadcasting. By 1929 when the Aird Report recommended a national network, the potential impact of the report was shaped by the path of early broadcasting and the shifts forced on Canada by American broadcasting and policy.     Abstract: This article examines the privatization of telegraphy in the British Empire from the perspective of Gibraltar, an overseas territory in the Mediterranean. While the history of international telegraphy is typically written from a world-systems perspective, this article presents a key methodological critique of the use of collections spread across many institutions and colonies: archival satellites are not simply reducible to parts of a scattered whole, as archival collections are themselves curations of socially-positioned understandings of Empire. This is especially true of the "girdle round the world" that was British telegraphy. At a meta-historical level, individual archival collections of the global British telegraphy system can be read as histories of colonial administrators' geographically- and socially-situated perspectives on Empire - namely through what archives have, and have not, preserved. The writers try to shed some light on the way Baraka's historiography challenges the white supremecist discourses through a rewriting of the African American past that blurs the boundaries of myth and history, fact and fiction, in a postmodern manner. It is argued that through the use of the central African myth of Esu/Elegba and drawing on traditions of Christianity and Western literature/culture, Baraka‘s poem offers an uncanny insight into the past
