    Other ; In order to grasp the imaginative geographical and historical scope of contemporary Indian writing in English, this thesis claims that it is necessary to think about literature beyond the paradigms of national, postcolonial or even transnational diasporic literatures. It is asserted that cosmopolitanism, which is here understood to be a concept that encompasses the negotiation of the ethics and practice of migration, community, responsibility, difference and sameness, offers the possibility of thinking critically about migration and globalization in the context of the literary texts at the centre of this thesis: Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies (2008) and River of Smoke (2011), Salman Rushdie’s The Enchantress of Florence (2007) and M.G. Vassanji’s The Assassin’s Song (2007). Literary criticism has acknowledged the relevance of cosmopolitan thought in contemporary literatures of a global, transnational literary imaginary. Yet the literature concerned with cosmopolitanism has, with a few exceptions, mainly used it as a descriptive rather than as an interpretative term, focusing on the politics of these fictional texts rather than on their aesthetics or in this case, to be more precise, their literary features. In this thesis, the interest is to examine the ethics, practice and aesthetics of cosmopolitan moments in which histories and geographies are rewritten and reimagined, i.e. the propensity of these four novels to remap, rethink and reimagine these narratives of time and space according to an understanding that moves away from postcolonial dichotomies towards a more global view of events that still takes into account existing power relations.

    Other ; Processes of hostile Othering on the basis of religious alterity and escalations of communal violence are represented in many contemporary novels by Indian and Pakistani writers. This thesis analyses the ways in which four selected Anglophone contemporary novels by Indian and Pakistani writers refer to, represent and discuss historical and contemporary events that have repeatedly been categorized as examples of ‘religious violence,’ i.e. violent conflicts where the religious identities of both perpetrators and victims were the major reason or pretense for their involvement in those conflicts. The four novels analyzed in this thesis and the events they refer to are Bapsi Sidhwa’s Cracking India (1991) about Partition 1947, Shashi Tharoor’s Riot (2001) about the riots accompanying the Ram Janmabhumi campaign in the early 1990s, Raj Kamal Jha’s Fireproof (2006) about the anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat 2002, and Salman Rushdie’s Shalimar the Clown (2005) about the Kashmir conflict. Embedded as they are in the ‘real,’ empirical world, these novels engage with and respond to what they are surrounded by — a world abounding with violence and violent conflicts which seem to be directly related to religion in one way or another. Drawing on the debates about the question of religion’s relation to violence in different fields and conscientiously factoring in the specific historical contexts that the novels refer to and were written in, this study aims at identifying the ways in which the four selected examples of literary fiction represent, respond to and discuss historical instances of religious violence and how they negotiate the relation between religion and the violence they describe. This thesis’ overarching question is how these novels, representing those violent events on a fictional level, position themselves regarding the relation between religion, religious alterity, hostile Othering and violence. The approach to answering my principal question importantly involves looking at the ways in which these fictional texts refer to and include contemporary public discourses on the topic of religion’s relation to violence in India. In this respect, I am especially interested in literary representations and negotiations of the complex dynamics of marginalization, repression or silencing of memories of traumatizing events in dominant discourses in the public domain. My central hypothesis is that by way of narrating specific instances of religiously connoted violence, the novels scrutinize and highlight processes of hostile Othering on the basis of religious alterity and thereby bring to the fore its consequences both for the individuals directly involved and society as a whole. I contend that these novels deplore the status of religious alterity as singular category of perceiving the socio-cultural ‘Other’ and, by virtue of providing a multifaceted, complex image of India’s and Pakistan’s inhabitants, argue for a conceptual pluralization of identities and illustrate the advantages of perceiving others not as same but instead as diversely different.

    Other ; Background The paper sheds light on the development of the cultural representation of HIV/AIDS in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from the 1980ies until present. It analyses the contribution of literature, theatre, and film to the public discourse about HIV/AIDS and characterises the rhetorical and iconographic strategies used to construct, represent, and discuss the disease and deal with it. The presentation shows which functions literature, theatre and film have performed within the HIV/AIDS discourse during the last 30 years in German speaking countries. Methods Having a background in Cultural Studies, Theatre Studies and German Studies the study uses methods from these disciplines to analyse the reception of aesthetic strategies – the ‘what’ and ‘how’ – of literary, theatrical and cinematic representations of HIV/AIDS on a micro level. On a macro level interdiscourse analysis (Jürgen Link) and sociological systems theory (Niklas Luhmann) are applied to describe the dramaturgical development of the HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries. Results The public HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries can be divided into seven stages characterised by different dominant modes of representing HIV/AIDS: exclusion and blame, prevention, integration, refuse of integration, apocalyptic scenarios, thrill, and normalisation. The dramaturgy of the HIV/AIDS discourse is initialised by the occurrence of the new disease in the 1980ies. In the first years it followed the pattern of historical epidemic discourses (plague, leprosy, syphilis). Since then, two major plotpoints have changed the structure of the discourse altogether: the discovery of the HI-Virus and the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy. In the 21st century HIV/AIDS starts to become normalised. Nevertheless discrimination patterns known from the HIV/AIDS discourse of the 1980ies can be found again in medial representations. Conclusions The paper discusses the complex relationship between cultural and medical communication in the face of HIV/AIDS. Literature, theatre, and film perform different functions dealing with the disease: 1. feeding rhetorical and iconographic representations into the public discourse 2. observing and documenting the discourse about HIV/AIDS in the mass media 3. intervening in the public discourse through criticism or alternative interpretations 4. offering coping / passing strategies and strategies of assigning meaning to the disease.

He went fishing and hunting with them. He was fascinated by their lifestyle and portrayed members of the families in his novel "Across the River and into the Trees". Ce livre réunit les témoignages d'Edith BOISSONNAS, poétesse suisse (1904-1989), de Henri MICHAUX et de Jean PAULHAN, consacrés à leurs premières expériences de cette drogue psychotrope, en janvier 1955. Le dimanche 2 janvier 1955, la poétesse suisse Edith Boissonnas retrouve son ami et éditeur Jean Paulhan devant le 16, rue Séguier, où vit Henri Michaux. Dans la poche de Paulhan, des ampoules de mescaline, hallucinogène que lui a procuré le neuropsychiatre Julian de Ajuriaguerra. Après cette journée inaugurale, l'expérimentation sera renouvelée deux fois, les 3 et 9 janvier. Dans les notes (inédites) de son Journal pour moi seule, Boissonnas rend compte de ces expérimentations dont Michaux résumera la déception : « J.P. en cinq mots dit notre pensée à tous. "On n'en sort pas fier". Des trois que nous étions, aucun n'avait donc pris cela avec révérence, mais plutôt comme un tour de prestidigitateur. » Ces journées de janvier 1955 vont pourtant être la source d'une constellation d'écrits, ici réunis par ordre chronologique : échanges épistolaires, proses descriptives, notes cliniques, micro-récits fictionnels, fragments d'essais et poèmes documentaires. Chacun s'acquittera également d'un texte abouti : Boissonnas publie « Mescaline » (1955), Paulhan écrit « Petit rapport sur une expérience » (1955) et Michaux livre Misérable miracle (1956), premier volume de son œuvre consacrée aux drogues, comptant encore quatre ouvrages et une centaine de dessins.

Nous commencerons par montrer les conséquences de l’application de la théorie de la pertinence sur l’étude des connecteurs, en prenant pour exemple les connecteurs de l’anglais. Dans un deuxième temps, nous exposerons les contraintes imposées par les limites actuelles du TALN.     Other ; The various meanings of discourse connectives like while and however are difficult to identify and annotate, even for trained human annotators. This problem is all the more important that connectives are salient textual markers of cohesion and need to be correctly interpreted for many NLP applications. In this paper, we suggest an alternative route to reach a reliable annotation of connectives, by making use of the information provided by their translation in large parallel corpora. This method thus replaces the difficult explicit reasoning involved in traditional sense annotation by an empirical clustering of the senses emerging from the translations. We argue that this method has the advantage of providing more reliable reference data than traditional sense annotation. In addition, its simplicity allows for the rapid constitution of large annotated datasets.

    Other ; The situation once described by Hoffmann (1985), in which children grow up exposed to three languages from an early age, is a reality for an increasing number of families. In Europe – as elsewhere – greater mobility is leading to greater numbers of mixed-language couples (Piller 2002), and, by extension, multilingual families. For such families, questions concerning the acquisition and maintenance of three or more languages in a natural environment are of direct relevance. Researchers in bilingualism have already pointed out the importance of social context for the acquisition of two languages in childhood, focusing in particular on the quantity and quality of exposure to the languages (De Houwer 1990; Döpke 1992; Okita 2002; Lanza 2004) or the prestige of the languages (Lambert 1977). In this paper, I will make use of the insights gained by such researchers and test them in a trilingual setting. The paper will focus mainly on one aspect, namely the conversational style of parents and caretakers. The data come from research being carried out in Switzerland and consist of 33 interviews with multilingual families, as well as case studies of two trilingual children. The findings attest to the importance of conversational style, but at the same time indicate that a number of further factors are also of great significance.

    Other ; Cet article s’intéresse aux différentes fonctions que l’on peut attribuer aux éléments fabuleux dans les œuvres du marquis de Sade. Il s’agit en particulier d’éclaircir les liens intertextuels entre Barbe-Bleue et un conte allégorique que le marquis publie, en 1800, dans la série de ses Crimes de l’amour, sous le titre de Rodrigue ou la tour enchantée. Dans ce texte, la chambre interdite renvoie aussi à un passé criminel, mais elle ne réveille pas la mauvaise conscience et ne suscite aucun remords. Sade semble vouloir faire du conte de Barbe-Bleue le paradigme d’un refoulement manqué, la figure d’une rechute malencontreuse dans un passé archaïque et indigne d’être examiné moralement.     Other ; During popular elections in Switzerland, the Federal Council announces the governmental position by means of brochures that are sent to all citizens. These brochures are characterized by a tight correlation between argumentation and interaction at two levels: the interdiscursive and the interlocutive. The aim of this paper is to show, on the basis of representative brochures, how the argumentative strategies used by the Federal Council affect this correlation. In the brochures proposing a referendum project, for instance, we notice a limited interaction due to their rational argumentation and their tendency to focus on the point of view of the Federal Council. However, in the brochures supporting or rejecting the popular initiatives, we observe a rise in interactive procedures. These procedures can be convergent or divergent, and they are associated with different argumentative strategies that go from “overbid” to polemic. All in all, a study of these governmental brochures confirms that the analysis of political discourse is enhanced by the so-called “dialogical” models (Plantin 2005) of argumentation. ; Other ; Lors des votations populaires en Suisse, le Conseil fédéral fait connaître la position gouvernementale à l’aide de brochures envoyées à tous les citoyens. Celles-ci mettent en jeu une corrélation étroite entre argumentation et interaction, tant sur le plan interdiscursif qu’interlocutif. L’objectif de cet article est de montrer, à partir de brochures représentatives, comment une telle corrélation varie fortement selon les stratégies adoptées par le Conseil fédéral. Ainsi, dans les brochures proposant un projet de référendum, on remarque une interaction limitée, en raison de leur argumentation rationnelle et de leur tendance à se fermer sur le point de vue du Conseil fédéral. Par contre, dans les brochures soutenant ou rejetant des initiatives populaires, on observe une montée au premier plan des procédures interactives. Celles-ci peuvent être convergentes ou divergentes, en liaison avec différentes stratégies argumentatives qui vont de la surenchère à la polémique. Au total, ces brochures gouvernementales nous confirment que l’analyse du discours politique gagne à être repensée à l’aide des modèles dits « dialogaux » (Plantin 2005) de l’argumentation.
