    Alors que le marché du livre numérique est encore balbutiant en France et représente moins de 1% du chiffre d'affaires des éditeurs, les stratégies commerciales mises en œuvre par les acteurs traditionnels de la chaîne du livre et par de nouveaux entrants permettent d'esquisser différentes configurations des marchés du livre numérique. La dématérialisation induit des mutations qui auront des conséquences sur l'ensemble de la filière : disparition et apparition d'acteurs, perte, création et déplacement de valeur, restructuration industrielle. Les enjeux de marché, soumis à certaines contraintes techniques comme celle de l'interopérabilité entre normes de fichiers et matériels de lecture, dépendent aussi du maintien ou de l'évolution de la législation régissant le commerce du livre en France : droits de propriété intellectuelle, fiscalité, mode de fixation du prix. Cette photographie cherche à synthétiser les futurs possibles de l'économie du livre numérique. Whilst the market for electronic books (or e-books) is still stuttering into life in France and represents less than 1% of publishers' turnover, the commercial strategies being implemented by both traditional and new players in the book publishing industry are laying the foundations for various possible publishing industry configurations. Dematerialisation is leading to changes which are likely to affect whole industry, e.g. the emergence and the disappearance of various industry players, the loss, creation and transfer of value and industry restructuring. The market faces issues such as technical constraints, i.e. interoperability between file formats and reader hardware. It is also subject to legislative support or change governing the publishing trade in France, covering such matters as intellectual property rights, taxation, price-fixing methods, etc. This snapshot aims to summarise the possible futures of the e-book economy.

    Tenant une place importante au sein de la filière du livre, le format de poche est dominé par un oligopole concurrentiel même si de petites maisons ont aussi recours à ce mode d'édition. Il a connu un grand succès du fait de la maîtrise du risque éditorial et de la recherche d'une optimisation des ventes. Le dynamisme de ce sous-secteur de l'édition a ainsi un impact sur l'ensemble de la filière du livre et en particulier sur les pratiques éditoriales. Mais la croissance de cet objet aux contours imprécis à force de s'élargir peut être menacée dans son modèle économique très tendu par la hausse des coûts ainsi que par les perspectives de numérisation d'une partie de son champ. Paperbacks, which occupy a large corner of the book trade, are overlorded by a competitive oligopoly, although smaller publishing houses also use the format. The format's success is due to minimisation of publishing risk and perfected sales techniques. The sub-sector's vitality exerts an influence on the industry in general and more particularly on publishing policies. The form's outline is hard to define since it has expanded so much, but its further growth as a tightly-strung economic model is threatened by rising costs and the possibility that some of its territory may be annexed by computers.

Une pression s'exerce sur leur niveau car c'est le seul paramètre sur lequel un éditeur peut jouer aisément. Les évolutions techniques risquent donc de pousser l'auteur, qui a accru sa part du travail dans la chaîne éditoriale, à prendre en charge l'ensemble de celle-ci, mais le statut du livre reste un atout stratégique des maisons d'édition. La croissance des rémunérations passant par des instances collectives est liée à la mise en place de mécanismes adaptés. Authors royalties, half billion euros paid by French publishers a year, are a key issue for the book publishing business. They tend to be squeezed because the level of royalties is the only parameter easily manageable by publishers. These are at risk of being outflanked because the authors whose part of the editing process has increased due to technical evolutions, will deal without them. Nevertheless, the book's status remains a key asset for publishers. Besides, the growth of the returns coming through collective institutions is linked to the adaptation of these mechanisms.

    Principalement fondées sur des enquêtes de terrain, ces études examinent la situation actuelle des petits éditeurs et établissent un bilan démographique des mouvements de création et de disparition de maisons d'édition entre 1988 et 2005. Elles décrivent notamment les conditions de fonctionnement de ces maisons, la spécificité de leurs choix éditoriaux et leurs difficultés d'accès au marché, tout en replaçant dans le contexte général de la profession les perspectives et les attentes de ces petites structures éditoriales. These studies, which are based mainly on on-the-spot surveys, examine the present situation of small publishers and provide a "demographic" record of the birth and demise of publishing houses from 1988 to 2005. The studies describe the conditions under which these publishers operate, their individual editorial policies, their difficulties in penetrating the market, and set the prospects and hopes of these small publishing concerns within the general context of the trade.
