    The oral literature of the Fulbe reflects their attitude toward the definition of their identity, and their images of "Fulbe-ness". Several traditional concepts characterize Fulbe-ness. These are related to 'pulaaku' (Fulbe-ness), pastoralism and Islam. The author discusses these concepts as found in the oral literature of the Fulbe of Diamare and Benoue in northern Cameroon and Adamaoua in East Cameroon. He deals in turn with amateur singing, professional singing, 'daacoobe' and 'mbooku' (songs, the former sung in the bush in 'bush' Fulfulde by cattle herders, the latter in the town in the Fulfulde of the townspeople), 'gime pulfule' (religious poems), folktales, riddles, proverbs and stories, and popular literature. He concludes that in Fulbe oral literature, Fulbe-ness is most clearly shown in the use of Fulfulde, of which there are several kinds in northern Cameroon. The Diamare dialect is considered to be the most conservative and authentic. In contrast, the Fulfulde used in some of the popular literature is called 'bikiire', vulgar tongue, and is desposed by the "core" Fulbe for its incompleteness. (Documentatieblad/ASC Leiden)

    Der Autor vermittelt einen Überblick über die Auseinandersetzung um den "Orientalismus". Als Repräsentant des Orientalismus wird Lewis, als Kritiker Said aufgeführt. Der Autor kritisiert die Repräsentanten des Orientalismus darin, daß sie mit einem undifferenzierten Islam-Begriff und Etymologien arabischer Termini versuchen, gesellschaftliche und politische Prozesse zu erklären. Den Kritikern des Orientalismus wird vorgeworfen, daß sie wegen ihrer Bezugnahme auf Diskurstheorien (Foucault) den Wahrheitsbegriff von Erkenntnis zu sehr an Machtverhältnisse koppeln und somit zur undifferenzierten Wahrnehmung der Orientalistik als Vertreterin westlicher Herrschaftsansprüche gelangt sind.     According to the author, the concepts of "bourgeois public sphere" and "civil society" as they have been applied to China pre-suppose a dichotomous opposition between state and society. It is his contention that the binary opposition between state and society is an ideal abstracted from early modern and modern Western experience that is inappropriate for China. Instead, a trinary conception, with a third space in between state and society, should be employed in which both participated. The author discusses briefly some examples of this third space or realm in imperial, Republican and contemporary China. (DÜI-Sen)

    The essay provides a contrapuntal "parallactic" reading of Johann Wolfgang Goethe's "Bildungsroman" Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre - with its extensions Wilhelm Meisters theatralische Sendung and Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre - and James Joyce's high modernist A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Ulysses (1922). Derived from astronomy, the term parallax designates, transferred to literary history, a narrative stratagem, a metapoetical rationale, and an interpretive method. Joyce employs it as a key concept and narrative tool in Ulysses to denote a stereoscopic perspective applied to the protagonists’ actions and the world they live in. Leopold Bloom thus refl ects on it and the technique of Ulysses is determined by it. On a higher plane, literary critics, too, engage in literary historical parallax whenever they read texts intertextually — as exemplified in this essay. A parallactic reading of the novels’ protagonists Wilhelm Meister and Stephen Dedalus, as regards not just their identification with Shakespeare’s Hamlet but also the symbolic connotations embedded in their names and mythological pretexts, allows us to shed new light on the roles and significance of narrative irony, chance, and paternity in these novels.
