    The theme of the contributions is the centrality of culture, referring to the Dante metaphor of the sapiential banquet and of "culture as food." The interventions intend to stimulate the start of an interdisciplinary reflection on the humanities in their sense of complex field and creative practice. Starting from different disciplines - from philosophy to literature and anthropology - and through dialogue between literati of various backgrounds, a perspective is proposed that encourages the encounter between "high" and "low" and between elite culture and folkloric culture . The arc of interest ranges from the texts of ancient Indian literature, to the Grail of Chrétien de Troyes and to the philosophical formation offered to the public by Dante's Convivio; from the fascinating stratification of traditional knowledge in the Lunari, to the carnival folkloric practices and to the imagination of the Land of Cockaigne; and again from the use of food as belonging in the writings of Italian emigrants in America.

    The book presents a selection of the works presented during various encounters held in sites connected with the life of Paolo Mantegazza, aimed at retrieving and valorising his cultural legacy. An eclectic figure - scientist, novelist, anthropologist and politician - Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) played a leading role in Italian society and the cultural scene of the late nineteenth century. The contributions of academics from different disciplines enable us to reconstruct both the great variety of the man’s interests and curiosities, and the strict methodological rigour that guided his entire scientific production and is today the most evident sign of his contemporary relevance. Il libro raccoglie una selezione dei lavori presentati in vari incontri tenuti nei luoghi legati alla vicenda biografica di Paolo Mantegazza e che miravano a recuperare e valorizzare la sua eredità culturale. This book addresses the aspects involved in both producing and listening to music from the point of view of cognitive science. Arguments that might appear hard for non-specialists to understand are addressed in a clear and accessible language. Fra i canali d'espressione dell'uomo il più ricco è forse la musica, che permette di esprimere le proprie emozioni – in un continuum che va dalla gioia al dolore, dalla esaltazione alla depressione – in modi socialmente e culturalmente accessibili e accettabili. Il volume affronta, dal punto di vista della scienza cognitiva, gli aspetti coinvolti sia nel produrre che ascoltare musica. Questi argomenti, che possono sembrare di non facile comprensione ai non specialisti, sono affrontati con un linguaggio chiaro e accessibile. Viene così costruito un appassionante percorso su alcuni aspetti del rapporto dell'uomo con la musica, che evidenzia come il lungo cammino dai primi suoni che l'uomo ha prodotto e individuato nella natura sino alle composizioni più moderne sia il risultato di un processo di razionalizzazione che ha visto al centro il multiforme rapporto fra uomo, ambiente e creazione musicale.

    This book presents the results of a study on the fragmentation of the suburban territory in the Florentine plain, developed in the framework of the Florence University PhD course in Landscape Design. Thus the landscape on the western edge of the urban centre becomes a case study for evolving from the applications to the quest for theoretical and methodological elements. What emerges clearly from this is the importance of the design mentality as an essential cultural value for the drafting of policies of active conservation, retrieval and modification of the landscape. Il volume presenta gli esiti di uno studio riguardante la frammentazione paesistica dei territori periubani di pianura nell'area fiorentina, elaborato nell'ambito delle attività del Dottorato di ricerca in Progettazione paesistica dell'Università di Firenze. Il paesaggio di margine ad ovest del nucleo urbano diviene così un caso di studio per passare dalle applicazioni alla ricerca di elementi teorico-metodologici. In tal senso emerge chiaramente l'importanza del pensiero progettuale come valore culturale essenziale per l'impostazione di politiche di conservazione attiva, recupero e modificazione del paesaggio.

    On 10 and 11 May 2006 the international conference on the theme “River, landscape and land conservation. Overcoming emergencies and grasping opportunities” was held in the main lecture hall of Florence University. The initiative was promoted and organised by the PhD course in Landscape Design – Professor Giulio G. Rizzo, Dr. Michele Ercolini – and by the Master degree course in Landscaping – Professor Guido Ferrara – of the University of Florence. The majority of the addresses presented during the two days of work, and included in this book, were characterised by the cultural and scientific input of the initiative, in other words the attempt to transform a “system of demands” (namely the requirements of land conservation) into a “system of opportunities” for the design of new landscapes. Nei giorni 10 e 11 maggio 2006 si è tenuto a Firenze, presso l'Aula Magna del Rettorato, il Convegno internazionale sul tema "Fiume, paesaggio, difesa del suolo. Superare le emergenze, cogliere le opportunità". L'input culturale e scientifico di tale iniziativa (promossa ed organizzata dal Dottorato di Ricerca in Progettazione Paesistica – prof. Giulio G. Rizzo, dott. Michele Ercolini – e dal Master in Paesaggistica – prof. Guido Ferrara – dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze), vale a dire il tentativo di trasformare un "sistema di esigenze" (riconducibile a necessità di difesa del suolo) in un "sistema di opportunità" per la progettazione di "nuovi paesaggi", ha contraddistinto la maggior parte delle relazioni presentate nelle due giornate di lavoro ed inserite nel presente volume.
