    This book addresses the issue of the potential economic significance of the artistic heritage in an art city – more specifically Florence – taking as a concrete example for the purpose of scientific research the figure of the “artistic restorer” in the dual garb of economic agent and environmental and cultural resource for the city. The empirical study of the private firms working in this sector located in the Florence area is accompanied and introduced by a broad analysis of the policies for protection and enhancement of the cultural assets, and of the economic, non-economic and institutional agents involved in the same. Il volume affronta il tema della possibile rilevanza economica del patrimonio artistico in una città d'arte, nello specifico Firenze, prendendo come esempio concreto ai fini di una ricerca scientifica la figura del "restauratore artistico" nella duplice veste di attore economico e di risorsa ambientale e culturale per la città. Lo studio empirico delle imprese private di tale settore localizzate nell'area fiorentina è accompagnato e introdotto da un'ampia analisi sulle politiche di tutela e valorizzazione dei beni culturali e sul sistema di attori economici, non economici ed istituzionali che in esse sono coinvolti.

An eclectic figure - scientist, novelist, anthropologist and politician - Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) played a leading role in Italian society and the cultural scene of the late nineteenth century. The contributions of academics from different disciplines enable us to reconstruct both the great variety of the man’s interests and curiosities, and the strict methodological rigour that guided his entire scientific production and is today the most evident sign of his contemporary relevance. Il libro raccoglie una selezione dei lavori presentati in vari incontri tenuti nei luoghi legati alla vicenda biografica di Paolo Mantegazza e che miravano a recuperare e valorizzare la sua eredità culturale.     Among the channels of human expression, perhaps the richest of all is music, through which people can express their emotions – in a continuum ranging from joy to grief, from excitement to depression – in a manner that is socially and culturally accessible and acceptable. This book addresses the aspects involved in both producing and listening to music from the point of view of cognitive science. Arguments that might appear hard for non-specialists to understand are addressed in a clear and accessible language. An enthralling itinerary through the various aspects of the human relationship with music that underscores how the long path from the first sounds that man has produced and identified in nature through to the most modern compositions are the result of a process of rationalisation gravitating around the multiform relationship between man, the environment and musical creation. Fra i canali d'espressione dell'uomo il più ricco è forse la musica, che permette di esprimere le proprie emozioni – in un continuum che va dalla gioia al dolore, dalla esaltazione alla depressione – in modi socialmente e culturalmente accessibili e accettabili. Il volume affronta, dal punto di vista della scienza cognitiva, gli aspetti coinvolti sia nel produrre che ascoltare musica. Questi argomenti, che possono sembrare di non facile comprensione ai non specialisti, sono affrontati con un linguaggio chiaro e accessibile. Viene così costruito un appassionante percorso su alcuni aspetti del rapporto dell'uomo con la musica, che evidenzia come il lungo cammino dai primi suoni che l'uomo ha prodotto e individuato nella natura sino alle composizioni più moderne sia il risultato di un processo di razionalizzazione che ha visto al centro il multiforme rapporto fra uomo, ambiente e creazione musicale.

    This book presents the results of a study on the fragmentation of the suburban territory in the Florentine plain, developed in the framework of the Florence University PhD course in Landscape Design. Thus the landscape on the western edge of the urban centre becomes a case study for evolving from the applications to the quest for theoretical and methodological elements. What emerges clearly from this is the importance of the design mentality as an essential cultural value for the drafting of policies of active conservation, retrieval and modification of the landscape. Il volume presenta gli esiti di uno studio riguardante la frammentazione paesistica dei territori periubani di pianura nell'area fiorentina, elaborato nell'ambito delle attività del Dottorato di ricerca in Progettazione paesistica dell'Università di Firenze. Il paesaggio di margine ad ovest del nucleo urbano diviene così un caso di studio per passare dalle applicazioni alla ricerca di elementi teorico-metodologici. In tal senso emerge chiaramente l'importanza del pensiero progettuale come valore culturale essenziale per l'impostazione di politiche di conservazione attiva, recupero e modificazione del paesaggio.

    Main description: Die kurze Zeit des neronischen Prinzipates ist, nicht zuletzt aus der Sicht späterer Rezeption, eine der herausragenden Phasen römischer Literatur und Kultur. Gleichwohl verfolgen die einzelnen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen dabei ganz unterschiedliche Problemstellungen. Der vorliegende Band, der die Ergebnisse eines interdisziplinären Symposions vom 3.-6. Mai 2001 in der Vila Vigoni (Menaggio) versammelt, sucht erstmals übergreifend nach einer kulturellen Klammer. Den Focus bildet dabei die auffallend häufige Verfahrensweise einer "Verkehrung". Für die unterschiedlichen Bereiche, von der neronischen Literatur bis zu archäologischen Zeugnissen, wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit mit der Struktur der "Verkehrung" ein übergreifendes Leitkonzept der Zeit erfaßt ist. Dabei zeigt sich, daß viele Einzelphänomene unter diesem Paradigma in ganz neuer Weise verständlich werden

    Main description: The studies show the extent to which love poems/songs by well-known medieval authors display links with supra-individual discourse conventions of the age in which they materialized. Central reference is made to Old Occitan troubadour songs of the 12th and early 13th centuries and Old Italian texts from the 13th and 14th centuries (notably by Giacomo di Lentini, Dante, and Petrarch). The comparison traces the gradual emergence of a lyrical 'I' reflecting the knowledge of the age and thus in a position to inquire into its own role. At all points in this development, poetry is seen to engage vigorously with the central epistemes of the dominant discourse forms, notably theology and philosophy
