'Category B' is a sharp and hard-hitting play about the brutal power structures of prison life. It is set in a Category B prison, where all offenders are placed after they are first convicted: it is tough, and dangerous, and compelling. Inside C Wing, Thames Gate Prison, it's the screws that have the keys, but all too often it's the prisoners that have the power. Williams's play was first performed as part of the 'Not Black and White' season at the Tricycle Theatre, London, in 2009.

Although advertised as having 'Music by Noël Coward and others', it in fact had only five Coward numbers and only one of them could be considered as a semi-sketch.

In the wake of the publication of his controversial book on adolescent sexuality, Dick and his wife, Liz, have retreated with their family to the French countryside. Joined by their friends Phil and Diana for a child-free weekend, they enjoy the sunshine and the cheap wine until certain unsavoury revelations come to light. At the worst moment possible, two reporters appear to interview Dick, causing great worry among the couples that all their secrets will be aired in the press. Nichols drew inspiration for 'Chez Nous' from time spent at his own family's home in France. This darkly comedic, and sometimes deeply shocking play was first produced in London in 1976.

An early work of Howard Brenton, first produced in 1969, 'Christie in Love' is based on the true events surrounding the interrogation and execution of serial killer John Reginald Christie. Brenton's disturbing writing portrays a stupidly aggressive police force dealing with a pathetically tormented man. Contrasting the everyday, ordinary demeanour of the killer with the disgusting, extra-ordinary atrocities he committed, Brenton asks what makes any of us different from that man and what is stopping us from becoming like him?

It is Christmas at the A and E of a Hull hospital; as Keith the security guard stays out of doors to keep an eye on the patients, their families, and the staff, we see an array of people come and go: from drugged-up Stevo to fagged-out Len, each with their own little mini-dramas to be seen. But Kath, the A and E nurse who this time last year lost her husband, is faced with the biggest drama of all, when she unexpectedly receives two tickets for a city-break to Prague. 'Christmas Crackers' was first performed in December 2006 at Spring Street Theatre, Hull.

First produced in 2005 at London's National Theatre, 'Citizenship' is a bittersweet one-act comedy about growing up, following a boy's frank and messy search to discover his sexual identity. Tom dreams of being kissed, but he's not sure whether by a man or by a woman, and he feels he should choose pretty quickly. His friends' homophobic teasing and interrogations about what he did with his friend Amy the other night leave Tom no space to make up his mind, and he's got no one to ask for advice, except maybe people on the internet. 'Citizenship' captures adolescent confusion with a witty and sensitive charm, crackling with humorous and authentic dialogue.

'Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie', originally written in 1966, but rewritten in 1991, is a riotous, Rabelaisian stew of a comedy concerning the demonic Charlie who is always trying to jump, with both feet, into his left trouser leg. While making a television programme about buskers, Michael Aylmer finds Charlie Ketchum in a lodging house, clutching a trumpet and stinking to high heaven. Intending to do a special programme on this uniquely virulent and garrulous character, Michael invites him to stay at his house. But when Charlie tries to resume his wandering life accompanied by a few household movables, Michael's wife Joan discovers to her cost that even after a bath and new trousers he is dangerous. The first act ends with his trial; the second act begins with his release from a psychiatric hospital.

Written in 1978, 'Cloud Nine' was first performed at Dartington College of Arts, Devon, on 14 February 1979. The two acts form a contrapuntal structure and the play uses controversial portrayals of sexuality and obscene language to establish a parallel between colonial and sexual oppression. Its humour depends on incongruity and the carnivalesque, and helps to convey Churchill's political message about accepting people who are different and not dominating them or forcing them into particular social roles.

First performed in Richmond in 1996, 'Clowns' is the sequel to 'Joyriders', reuniting its characters on the eve of the first IRA ceasefire, eight years after Maureen's death. It is a play about the moment between history and future, its characters trapped by the pain of the past but faintly hopeful about an end to the conflict which has defined their lives.

'Coffee' centres around the death of a child and asks disturbing questions about the history of the twentieth century, through an examination of what constitutes acceptable behaviour towards children in our time. 'Coffee' was first staged in 2000 at Le Théâtre National de la Colline in Paris. 'Come Into the Garden Maud' is the final play in the trilogy, 'Suite in Three Keys', in which each play is set in the same Swiss hotel suite. It was written by Coward in 1966, and represents the last of his output for the stage before he died. Anna-Mary Conklin and her husband Verner are an exceedingly wealthy American couple and the stars of 'Come into the Garden Maud'. While Anna-Mary, a social-aspirant, is nervously throwing a dinner-party offstage to entertain a prince she wants to impress, Verner - who cares little for the niceties of society life - gets along very well with the aristocratic, but down-to-earth, Maud Caragnani - very well indeed.

First performed at London's Apollo Theatre in 1976, 'Confusions', a series of one-act plays, typifies Ayckbourn's particular brand of black comedy on human behaviour. The plays are alternately naturalistic, stylised and farcical, but underlying each is the echoing problem of profound loneliness. 'The Mother Figure' shows a mother unable to escape from baby talk; in 'The Drinking Companion' an absentee husband attempts seduction without success; in 'Between Mouthfuls' a waiter oversees a fraught dinner encounter. A garden party gets out of hand in 'Gosforth's Fête' while 'A Talk in the Park' is a revue style curtain call piece for five actors. Whether the comedies concern marital conflict, infidelity or motherhood; take place on a park bench or at a village fete, the characters are familiar and their cries for help instantly recognisable.

Simon Weinberg is dead. And, on a November morning, six people gather at his funeral - brothers and a sister, lovers and in-laws. Mourning allows them a special privilege and, for a few hours, they are isolated in another world under a lingering sun, in the shadow of the deceased. 'Conversations After a Burial' is a savage but richly comic play which explores that ineffable moment of mourning, when the newly deceased is still almost palpable, the moment in which one can maintain the memory of a breath, the intense pause between absence and the return to everyday existence, between loss and life. The play premiered at the Almeida Theatre, London, in September 2000.

Fresh from an apparently successful acting career abroad, Michael has returned to his old home town; back to the youth club-turned-pub where he and his friends once hashed out their plans for the future. That pub, 'The White House', stood as a place where free thought was possible for the young people of the town, away from the church and from the school. Now, though, the reunited friends are tied down to the realities of their lives after youth has given way to slow but steady decay, and as the evening wanes to night, their true lack of direction becomes clear through muddled conversations as pints are poured and drank. Standing over all of this are the absent bar owner JJ and his beloved portrait of the late JFK, both fallen heroes from an idealistic and idealised time now long gone. 'Conversations on a Homecoming' was first performed by the Druid Theatre Company, Galway, on 16 April 1985.

Premiered at the Royal Court in 2004, 'Country Music' is a dramatic play about love, crime and possibly redemption, with a purity of structure that gives it great emotional force. The play dips in and out of the life of Jamie Carris over twenty years, showing him meeting with his girlfriend, his half-brother and his daughter. It is also the story of his crime - his flight, his time in prison and his attempt to find his way in the world once he is released. Jamie commits a crime, an act of vengeance which is the terrible pivot of the play's action, but Stephens focuses not on his violence but on his relationships and his humanity.

John Godber's satirical play takes a look at what will happen when climate change finally tightens its grip on the lowlands. Set on the pitches of the rundown Beech Hill Bowling club, we watch across a period of twenty years as the environment disintegrates, and the Yorkshire landscape, both physical and social, is irreparably altered. 'Crown Prince' was first performed in May 2007 at Spring Street Theatre, Hull.

The central play in Byrne's 'Slab Boys Trilogy' (bracketed by 'The Slab Boys' and 'Still Life'), one of Scotland's defining 20th century literary works, 'Cuttin' a Rug' is set in Paisley Town Hall on a Friday evening in 1957, and highlights the theme of social inequality as the annual staff dance of A. F. Stobo and Company, Carpet Manufacturers, plays out. Its original version was premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 1979.

Silenus, father of the Satyrs, has been trapped on Sicily, held prisoner by the Cyclops son of Poseidon, Polyphemus. Silenus is despondent: his captive fate was found when seeking to rescue another god, Dionysus. Instead, it is Silenus and his sons who are prisoners, of a much lesser, more ravenous god. The potential for rescue comes when Odysseus, the hero strategist of the Trojan War, washes up on the Sicilian shore. His men too get captured, but rather than bemoan his fate, Odysseus connives to destroy the Cyclops once and for all, using wit, wisdom and plenty of wine. A celebration of the liberating effects of alcohol, 'Cyclops' is a Euripidean take on the Homeric myth, full of jokes, tricks and stagey comedy.

Three actors, a director, and a producer are dining at a trendy London restaurant. In the glamour of it all, they compliment, flatter, and boast - while privately criticising and drowning in self-doubt. This thoughtful comedy explores the superficial and hypocritical nature of the dazzling thespian world, while also pointing out the vulnerability and good-naturedness that lie beneath it all.

Tom Stoppard's two adaptations from plays by Arthur Schnitzler, 'Dalliance' and 'Undiscovered Country', explore in contrasting ways the workings of Viennese society in the 1890s, setting the upper-class stylised codes of behaviour against their effects in practice on human relationships. 'Dalliance' is a bitter sweet drama about a young working class girl who falls in love with a military officer. She alone has not learned that love is temporal and trivial, a mere series of dalliances. It was first performed at the National Theatre, London, in 1986.

It is 1936 and harvest time in County Donegal. In a house just outside the village of Ballybeg live the five Mundy sisters, barely making ends meet, their ages ranging from twenty-six up to forty. The two male members of the household are brother Jack, a missionary priest, repatriated from Africa by his superiors after 25 years, and the seven-year-old child of the youngest sister. Two days in the life of this menage are depicted in the play. 'Dancing at Lughnasa' premiered at Dublin's Abbey Theatre in 1990.

Dansen is a pig farmer and a respectable member of the community. His fellow members of the commerce class in the town often meet, to play cards, sign contracts and sort out disagreements; it is a wholly satisfying way of life. But this cosy arrangement is upset with the arrival of a stranger, a man who is intent on breaking contracts and instigating the most hostile of takeovers with the point of a pistol. He forces Dansen into collaboration: against his former colleagues, his better judgement and his own interests. Written in early 1939, 'Dansen' is a one-act agitprop piece which highlights the dangers of appeasement in the face of aggressive behaviour from a self-appointed enemy.
