The story of nine young people and a statue of a private soldier in the First World War. At its heart is a trio of people - each in love with the other, but in the wrong order. Adie likes Gary, but Gary likes Shelley, who likes Adie. None of this is simple, as the three discover as they struggle to understand and cope with the hand life and love have dealt them and 'sort out what they can put up with, and what they can't'. Commissioned for the 1999 BT National Connections scheme, this insightful, tough and moving play was first produced at the National Theatre in 1999.

Losing all faith in humanity, and their basest incarnation, the tragedians, Dionysos, god of the theatre, vows to go to the underworld to revive the greatest tragedian of all, the barely cold Euripides, who had died the year before. Enlisting his servant Xanthias, and asking his half brother Herakles for directions, Dionysos sets off to Hades' Halls, only to find Euripides engaged in a contest with Aeschylus, as to who was the greatest of them all. Dionysos sets himself the task of judging their weighty words, but more often than not these tragedians make him the butt of their jokes. 'Frogs' is a wonderful mix of the living and the dead, of the tragic and the comic.

'Fumed Oak' is a satisfying suburban comedy in two acts: in the first, Henry Gow sits silently as his grumbling mother-in-law, his snappish wife and his whining daughter bicker over breakfast; in the second, he announces that he has changed his name and bought a boat ticket, and, leaving them the house and a barrage of insults he has been saving for over ten years, goes out of the front door with glee. 'Fumed Oak' is a short play from the 'Tonight at 8.30' cycle, which was first produced at the Phoenix Theatre in London in 1936.

'Funeral Games' was first presented by Yorkshire Television in August 1968 as part of a series based on `The Seven Deadly Virtues'. Orton created such outrageous characters that he was able to shock his audience with the unexpected and often grotesque in a play that offers bogus religion, a severed hand, and a corpse in the cellar.

It is 1979. Esme Allen is a well-known West End actress at just the moment when the West End is ceasing to offer actors a regular way of life. The visit of her young daughter, Amy, with a new boyfriend sets in train a series of events which only find their shape eighteen years later. A generational play about the long term struggle between a strong mother and her loving daughter, 'Amy's View' mixes love, death and the theatre in a way which is both heady and original.

Written for Live Theatre in 1977, this bitter-sweet domestic comedy is set in the Newcastle of 30 years or so before that, from the day war broke out to VE Day, and follows the fortunes of the Stott family from Walker. It is firmly rooted in working class life and values, with the somewhat ambiguous position of women in a society which was firmly patriarchal but also, in the North Eastern working class, thoroughly matriarchal.

In '... And Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi' the world of the Civil War provides the setting in which Greek myth, talking trees, singing rivers, and a moonwalking Jesus combine to interrogate the politics of sex and the body. By disregarding and distorting sacrosanct narratives and images of Christianity and American history, Gardley pushes us to rethink the lessons and limitations of these institutions vis-à-vis our contemporary moment. His inventive and brazen formal approach not only prompts such re-evaluations, but also frames an affecting story whose essence is one of longing, redemption, and forgiveness.

In 1958, actress Coral Browne met a spy in Moscow. And not just any spy - the exiled English spy, Guy Burgess, whom she visits in his seedy flat in Russia's capital. Based on true events, Bennett's play offers a portrait of betrayal and morality that ultimately focuses on one's man desire to be alone and the consequences of that desire. 'An Englishman Abroad' premiered at the Royal National Theatre, London, in December 1988.

The play is inspired by the painting of the same name by Joseph Wright of Derby, and gives a fascinating life to its seven subjects. Their house buzzes with scientific experiments, furtive romances and farcical amateur dramatics. At the centre is Joseph Fenwick, a scientist of the Enlightenment, studying anatomy and the apparently God-like power of vacuums and air pumps. Living in the house two hundred years later is Ellen, a geneticist working in the ethically-complicated field of foetal diagnostics. It premiered at the Royal Exchange Theatre in 1998.

Albert Stokes, a loner in his late twenties, lives with his emotionally-suffocating mother and works in an office. After being falsely accused of groping a female at an office party, he wanders the streets until he meets a girl, who invites him to her flat, where he responds to her overtures by angrily demeaning her. Then he returns home to his mother. 'A Night Out' was first performed on BBC Radio in March 1960. Its performance on television a month later, on 24 April 1960, was Pinter's first big success as a playwright in that medium.

'A Patriot for Me' shows how a young, able and ambitious officer of the Imperial and Royal Army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was, through his homosexuality, blackmailed into becoming a spy for Tsarist Russia. When John Osborne wrote 'A Patriot for Me' it was not licensed for public performance by the Lord Chamberlain. In July 1965 the Royal Court Theatre, London, had to be converted into a club for the first production to take place. This volume contains a list of the cuts and alterations requested by the Lord Chamberlain - to which Osborne refused to agree.

'April in Paris', first performed by Hull Truck Theatre Company in 1992, is a delicately wrought comedy filled with raucous indelicate dialogue. Al and Bet are a married couple, living a monochrome life. Left half-broke by Al's continuing unemployment, the couple bicker about everything from having no hot water to Al's uninspired black-and-white paintings to Bet's obsession with magazine competitions. When Bet finally wins one - the prize being a trip for two to Paris - there is the glimmer of romantic hope for a complete reversal of fortunes.

Sir Anthony Blunt is the director of the Courtauld Institute, London. While cleaning a Titian painting, Blunt has discovered a potential forgery in the Royal Collection. But the painting isn't the only fake - Blunt himself is a spy, the soon-to-be infamous 'fourth man' in the Cambridge Spy Ring. Playing on the concept of fakes, Bennett's drama explores deception, loyalty and artifice in British society, exposing the muddy waters of Cold War era politics and government. 'A Question of Attribution' premiered at the Royal National Theatre, London, in December 1988.

In 'A Respectable Wedding' (1919) Brecht ruthlessly ridiculed the apparent perfection, false morality, sentimentality and commonness of the petite bourgeoisie. The world of illusionary happiness of the petite bourgeoisie, which reaches its peak with a wedding, collapses in front of the audience as quickly as the groom's handmade furniture, which breaks even before the wedding reception finishes. 'A Respectable Wedding' was the only one of Brecht's early one act plays to be staged during his life. It premiered in Frankfurt in 1926.

A family gathers for a wedding at the ancestral home in County Donegal, its crumbling edifice testimony to an opulent way of life that's all but finished. As the accusations and demands of their dying father ring out, his wayward, volatile offspring find consolation in reinventing wild and bohemian stories of the big house in its heyday. 'Aristocrats' premiered at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in March 1979.

First performed in Glasgow in 1964, Arden's three act historical drama is in Scots dialect, with some verse and songs. Although a study of 16th century political intrigue on the Scottish border, it sheds new light on the experience of conscript soldiers at the tail end of colonialism in the 1960s, being partly inspired by contemporary events in the Congo.

A satirical play, 'Ars Longa Vita Brevis' draws comparisons between education and military conquest, suggesting that the result of both is the suppression of individual expression, and, ultimately, the death of the individual, as seen in the life of the martially-minded art master Mr Miltiades. The free rein the authors give to the possibility for production is in marked contrast to the damning, and ultimately damned, techniques of the protagonist of the piece.
