Der kunstvoll gestaltete Briefwechsel mit Paulinus ist eines der frühesten Zeugnisse der Auseinandersetzung des frühen Christentums mit heidnischen Traditionen. "Bissula" heißt ein junges germanisches Mädchen, dem der bereits ältere römische Kommandant ein anrührendes Liebesgedicht widmet. Beide zuletzt genannten Werke erscheinen erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung.

    Main description: Kein anderer Schriftsteller hat mehr lateinische Verse gefertigt als Jacob Balde (1603-1668). Der "Liber Epodon" umfasst 21 Epoden mit 1657 Versen. Das Werk bildet Abschluss und Höhepunkt der berühmten "Lyrica" (1643). Sein "Sondercharakter" zeigt sich in Metrik , Ton und Thematik; es changiert zwischen Konvergenz und Divergenz zu den Vorgängern Horaz und Sarbiewski souverän, und es bleibt unerreicht. Bisher beruht überhaupt kein einziges Werk Baldes auf einer gesicherten Textbasis. Dieser Text berücksichtigt alle fünf authentischen Drucke - von der Erstausgabe (1643) bis zur Gesamtausgabe letzter Hand (1660) - und dokumentiert alle Varianten ohne Ausnahme

The autor pays special attention to the adulation of Domitian in book seven, the satirization of lawyers, legacy-hunters, parasites and dinner-guests, and hetero- and homosexuality. The commentary, preceded by a revised edition of Shackleton Bailey’s Teubner edition (1990), focuses on literary, linguistic and metrical matters. Thematic relationships with other books of Martial and other Greek and Latin literature are highlighted. Attention is also paid to the use of recurrent motifs, obscene language, puns, double meanings and proper names

The commentary treats fully matters of linguistic and textual interpretation, metre and prosody, grammar, lexicon and idiom, of Roman behaviour, social and ritual, as well as Virgil’s sources and the literary tradition. New critical approaches and developments in Virgilian studies have been taken into account with economy and fairness. The Latin text is presented with a facing English translation. The commentary is followed by an appendix on Penthesilea and the Epic Cycle and a second appendix which discusses the weaknesses of Aeneid 11. The book concludes with English and Latin indices. Leonardo Bruni Aretino ( c. 1370-1444) was one of the most gifted and prolific translators of Greek authors in the early Italian Renaissance and a bestseller whose works often circulated in more than a hundred manuscripts. Moreover, Homer ranks as the most admired Greek poet in the Renaissance. The 'Orationes Homeri', id est Bruni's translation of three speeches from the embassy scene, are of focal interest in the studies of Renaissance literature in its many aspects: survival of ancient authors and their influence on Renaissance literature and literary theory, translation theory and practice, knowledge of Greek poetic language. This first critical edition with an introduction and a systematic commentary presents the 'Orationes Homeri' in comparison with other works of Bruni and translations of Homer by other humanists. It includes the part of the Lorenzo Valla version corresponding to the 'Orationes Homeri' and the Castilian version of the 'Orationes Homeri', which is the first vernacular translation of Homer
