    The study describes concepts of body and of law in the Nibelungenlied and analyzes gender relationships in the epic from the perspective of both areas of knowledge. Jahrhunderts nationalkonservativ geprägten – Marburger Philipps-Universität die Funktionalität und Kontinuität einer akademischen Elite über unterschiedliche politische Systeme hinweg. Die Aufsätze widmen sich am Beispiel von teilweise hochideologisierten Fächern wie Germanistik, Kunstgeschichte, Musikwissenschaft und Volkskunde institutionengeschichtlichen, biographischen und methodengeschichtlichen Fragestellungen. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der Frage, in welchem Zusammenhang wissenschaftliche Arbeit, Mitgliedschaften in Parteien und Organisationen, politische Aktivitäten und Karriereverläufe der Universitätsangehörigen stehen. This work looks at the Philipps-Universität, Marburg, an institution influenced by national conservatism in the first half of the 20th century, in a study of the functionality and continuity of an academic elite spanning different political systems. The essays address questions concerning the institution's history, biographies and history of methods in disciplines heavily influenced by ideology, such as German studies, art history, musicology and European ethnology. Particular attention has been paid to the connection between academic work, membership in parties and organizations, political activities and careers of those at the university.

    Wie andere Außenseiter der Literatur wurde auch Kleist häufig zum Gegenstand einer Deutungspraxis, welche die Gebrechlichkeit der Texte vor allem als Hindernis auf dem Weg zu einer einheitlichen Interpretation begriffen hat. Die Aufsätze des vorliegenden Bandes, die mehr oder minder deutlich vor dem Hintergrund intensiver literaturtheoretischer Debatten in Frankreich und den USA entstanden sind, nehmen Kleists Literatur in einer anderen Weise ernst. Bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit der individuellen Leseverfahren erscheint das Werk Kleists als Herausforderung an die Literaturwissenschaft. Die Herausforderung besteht nicht zuletzt darin, daß das, was als die ebenso grundlegende wie (häufig) unausgesprochene Voraussetzung jeder literaturwissenschaftlichen Arbeit im Spiel ist, von den Texten Kleists in Frage gestellt wird: die Möglichkeit des Verstehens selbst. Kleists Texte geben weniger eine äußere Realität wieder, als daß sie die epistemologischen Grenzen der Referenz zum Thema machen. Gerade deshalb bietet sich sein Werk für Untersuchungen des Verhältnisses von Literatur und Philosophie, von Sprachlichkeit und Welterfahrung, Subjekt und symbolischer Ordnung, von Gesetz und Gerechtigkeit an.

    Science fiction is at the intersection of numerous fields. It is a literature which draws on popular culture, and which engages in speculation about science, history, and all types of social relations. This volume brings together essays by scholars and practitioners of science fiction, which look at the genre from these different angles. After an introduction to the nature of science fiction, historical chapters trace science fiction from Thomas More to more recent years, including a chapter on film and television. The second section introduces four important critical approaches to science fiction drawing their theoretical inspiration from Marxism, postmodernism, feminism and queer theory. The final and largest section of the book looks at various themes and sub-genres of science fiction. A number of well-known science fiction writers contribute to this volume, including Gwyneth Jones, Ken MacLeod, Brian Stableford Andy Duncan, James Gunn, Joan Slonczewski, and Damien Broderick
