The commentary treats fully matters of linguistic and textual interpretation, metre and prosody, grammar, lexicon and idiom, of Roman behaviour, social and ritual, as well as Virgil’s sources and the literary tradition. New critical approaches and developments in Virgilian studies have been taken into account with economy and fairness. The Latin text is presented with a facing English translation. The commentary is followed by an appendix on Penthesilea and the Epic Cycle and a second appendix which discusses the weaknesses of Aeneid 11. The book concludes with English and Latin indices. In approach and learning, this commentary continues Nicholas Horsfall’s impressive work as a commentator and will advance our understanding of the Aeneid and the poet Virgil

It also covers a large number of notorious cases of verbal corruption and discusses problems of the manuscript tradition on the basis of the most recent research. Beyond questions of textual criticism and history in the narrow sense the book provides also important exegetical remarks on many Propertian passages and deals in a separate chapter with problems of book and poem structure

Erasmus, Alfonso und Juan de Valdés, Gaspare Contarini, Gian-Matteo Giberti, Alberto Pio, Juan Martínez Silíceo und Reginald Pole), von seiner Arbeit als Chronist Kaiser Karls V. und als Übersetzer des Aristoteles, von seinen Diskussionen mit Bartolomé de las Casas über die Eroberung von Amerika, aber auch von den Wünschen, Leiden und Freuden des Alltagslebens.     Iulius Valerius (wohl 4.Jh. n.Chr.) übersetzte den Alexanderroman des Pseudo-Kallisthenes ins Lateinische; diese Übersetzung ist besonders wertvoll als Zeugnis des Lateins jener Zeit. Die Edition von Michela Rosellini (Erstauflage 1993) stellt die auf dem internationalen Buchmarkt einzige moderne textkritische Ausgabe dar und wird zum Teil als regulärer Lesetext für Seminare zur Spätantike empfohlen. Für die zweite Auflage hat die Herausgeberin den gesamten Text durchgesehen, korrigiert und durch Addenda erweitert, in denen ein Überblick über neuere Literatur und neue Lesarten gegeben wird. A new edition of the Aeneid requires not only a systematic and reliable assessment of the text, but also a satisfactory and, if possible, complete description of the manuscripts’ transmission.Here, not only were the seven Late Antique codices studied anew, but the recensio was also extended by drawing on sources from the Carolingian Age only some of which were incorporated by earlier editors. To this end eight tesimonies which had never been studied previously were collated. As a result the reader has access to an apparatus criticus which is mainly dedicated to textual matters. Eine neue kritische Edition der Aeneis erfordert ein systematisches und zuverlässiges Durchdenken des Textes, jedoch auch eine ausreichende und möglichst vollständige Darbietung der handschriftlichen Überlieferung.Hierfür wurden nicht nur die sieben spätantiken codices erneut durchgesehen, sondern die recensio wurde erweitert durch den Rückgriff auf Zeugnisse aus der karolingischen Zeit, die die früheren Editoren nur teilweise mit herangezogen haben. Zu diesem Zweck wurden acht bisher völlig unerforschte Testimonien kollationiert. Auf diese Weise steht dem Leser ein hauptsächlich textorientierter kritischer Apparat zur Verfügung. In der Praefatio wird die neuzeitliche Geschichte des Textes dargestellt. This edition of the Ephesiaca ist based on: 1) a new and accurate reading of the difficult codex unicus; 2) a practically full knowledge of emendations proposed by other scholars from 1700 to the present; and 3) conjectures offered by the present editor. In the preface some aspects of the early modern history of the text are clarified.
