    According to the existing literature, informality rates for Russia vary in a wide range from slightly more than 5 to nearly 30 percent. The question arises: what are causes and consequences of so huge variation? Using RMLS data for 2009 the paper investigates the degree of congruence between several alternative definitions of the informal employment in the context of Russian labor market. Analysis shows that depending on empirical definitions informality rates considerably differ - from 11 to 24 percent. With different approaches not only scale of the informal employment but also its socio-demographic profile radically changes. Furthermore, the econometric analysis reveals that the conditional impact of particular factors on the risk of informality varies considerably from one definition to another. This suggests that that estimates of the informal employment for Russia could hardly be regarded as methodologically robust.

    Applying the lifetime income approach the paper provides estimates for Russia's stock of human capital. The results show that using an annual discount rate of 4 per cent and assuming annual labor productivity growth of 5,2 per cent, the market value of Russia's human capital stock in 2010 was more than 600 trillion Rubles, or nearly 40 trillion US$ by PPP. In 2002-2010 its stock doubled in real terms. Ratio of human capital to GDP was around thirteen and its ratio to physical capital was more than five. In 2010, the average human capital stock per head of working age population amounted to 6 million Rubles, or about 360,000 US$ by PPP. In terms of their human capital holdings males were wealthier than females, young generations were wealthier than old ones and people with higher education were wealthier than people with lower education. Aging had negative effect on human capital dynamics while effects of decline in mortality rates, shifts in educational structure, increased school enrollment rates, rise in employment rates and rapid growth in real wages were positive.
