    Other ; This contribution takes a diachronic look at the political, social, cultural and economic reasons behind the decline of Haketia, which has become one of the most symbolic icons in the collective memory of the Hispano-Moroccan Sephardic Jews in their new settlements. The article has three parts: it opens with a general section that introduces the concept of Sephardic Jew and sets out the linguistic varieties of this ethnic group; a second section contextualises the sociocultural and linguistic history of Sephardic Jews in Morocco after their expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula and up until 1860, the year of the Spanish military foray into North Morocco; and a third and central section examines the causes of the decline of Haketia and the current situation. The article concludes with glottopolitical reflections on the evolution of this idiom, the tension between a colonised and a colonising tongues, and the role of language in ethnic-cultural identity, all of which prove how linguistic homogeneity and linguistic difference can be considered the result of ideological expressions in the social and political processes of a given region.

    Other ; Crowdsourcing linguistic phenomena with smartphone applications is relatively new. In linguistics, apps have predominantly been developed to create pronunciation dictionaries, to train acoustic models, and to archive endangered languages. This paper presents the first account of how apps can be used to collect data suitable for documenting language change: we created an app, Dialäkt Äpp (DÄ), which predicts users’ dialects. For 16 linguistic variables, users select a dialectal variant from a drop-down menu. DÄ then geographically locates the user’s dialect by suggesting a list of communes where dialect variants most similar to their choices are used. Underlying this prediction are 16 maps from the historical Linguistic Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland, which documents the linguistic situation around 1950. Where users disagree with the prediction, they can indicate what they consider to be their dialect’s location. With this information, the 16 variables can be assessed for language change. Thanks to the playfulness of its functionality, DÄ has reached many users; our linguistic analyses are based on data from nearly 60,000 speakers. Results reveal a relative stability for phonetic variables, while lexical and morphological variables seem more prone to change. Crowdsourcing large amounts of dialect data with smartphone apps has the potential to complement existing data collection techniques and to provide evidence that traditional methods cannot, with normal resources, hope to gather. Nonetheless, it is important to emphasize a range of methodological caveats, including sparse knowledge of users’ linguistic backgrounds (users only indicate age, sex) and users’ self-declaration of their dialect. These are discussed and evaluated in detail here. Findings remain intriguing nevertheless: as a means of quality control, we report that traditional dialectological methods have revealed trends similar to those found by the app. This underlines the validity of the crowdsourcing method. We are presently extending DÄ architecture to other languages.

    The objective of the contributions presented in this volume is the investigation of authorship in pre-modern Arabic texts. From several angles and different perspectives it has been asked how the author in his various facets and aspects, and as a principle of organization and guidance, can be traced and understood. The author can be perceived as a historical individual, a singular genius, or a gifted anthologist; he can claim authority or pass it on to others. The author can be invisible, applying textual strategies for steering the reader’s perception and interpretation, trying to leave the reader oblivious to his authorial interference. Although authors can be proud to present their knowledge and their opinions, they can also be reluctant to show themselves and can even disclaim their responsibility, depending on the issue at hand. The contributions gathered in this volume provide a fresh view on the multilayered nature of authorial functions and open up new perspectives on our understanding of the rich and diverse pre-modern Arabic culture and literature.

    Although all members of EATAW will have their own thoughts on digitalization and, recently, more publications are devoted to this topic, we miss coherent discourses and feel that other contexts (mainly from the IT disciplines) have taken the lead in these discussions. For future EATAW conferences, we suggest placing a strong emphasis on digitalization and would like to discuss which aspects of it should be stressed most. For a first step, it would be great to initiate an exchange on hot issues in teaching and research related to digitalization and explore ideas for future collaboration. Christian Rapp and Otto Kruse will give an introduction to the session and explain the idea of it with a short input about some problems connected to the challenges of new digital tools for the teaching of writing and the question of whether and how much writing teachers should take over control and ownership of the new technology or leave it to the IT and E-Learning disciplines. Kalli Benetos will talk about the need for researchers and educators to put DESIGN and intent before technology in adopting more design-based research approaches to drive technology development and uses, instead of being led by "market forces". Chris Anson will address the following question: What are the consequences - ethical, developmental, rhetorical, and interpersonal - of having computers “read” and evaluate student writing?

    At European universities, writing is a traditional way of learning, assessment, and independent study, but it is handled in an implicit, tradition-based way that has only recently been contrasted with and supported by a more explicit writing ped-agogy. Still, little systematic knowledge is available about the pedagogical ap-proaches to writing, writing practices, and genres across Europe and much of it is codified in the national languages without correlation to internationally accept-ed terminology and theories. This book explores the writing cultures of Europe, nation by nation, and reports the idiosyncrasies for each respective country. The reports are based on a 17-item topic list used by the authors to collect data be-fore synthesizing the results. Next to writing practices and genres, a high level of emphasis was placed on the structure of educational systems, the languages in use, and the kind of support provided for student writers. Note: This research project has been conducted within the framework of COST Action IS0703 “European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively”, funded by the European Union.     This chapter extends the scope of the term ‘seamless learning’ to include writing as one of the most prominent learning activities in education. The seamless learning concept is used to analyse the ongoing flow of digital innovation with respect to the changing instructional and intellectual positioning of writing in its various contexts. The term ‘seams’ is interpreted as frictions or barriers in the writer’s experience, and the concept of ‘seamlessness’ refers to coherence in the practice and learning of writing. In order to understand the impact of digitisation on writing, this chapter recaps on the major development steps of digital writing technology, before offering an example of an integrated learning platform for the writing of academic theses which intends to offer students a seamless writing experience. The results indicate that the term seamlessness in the context of writing should not be directly associated with mobile learning or to the ubiquitous learning opportunities which are qualities that writing technologies have already offered for some time. Other more recent technological changes have provided considerably greater impact on what the authors term as ‘seamless writing’.
