    This paper studies one of the earliest forms of modern consumer culture—the road book—in relation to one of the early utopias of modern consumption—California. Criticism has traditionally treated the road book as an extension of a loosely defined transcendentalist project, where drivers take to the open road to “discover” themselves in nature. The determinate context, however, is corporate rather than literary-historical. The earliest road books were advertisements. Their itineraries linked up with other spatial technologies (e.g. the conveyor belts in automobile plants and modern highways), transforming space into a vast production and distribution network. Production and distribution intersected in California, the state with the most automobiles per capita and the destination of most early road trips. The first section of the paper considers the journey to California from the perspective of Emily Post, who would later become a famous writer on etiquette. Post’s book is the narrative equivalent to the standardized roadside architecture, converting local difference into a tourist attraction, and local (especially ethnic) identity into a commodity. The next section considers the effects of commercial homogenization on gender, focusing on the moment when some women, taking the steering wheel, assumed agency as consumers. The primary texts here are some of the early novels of Sinclair Lewis, along with examples of sociology and advertising copy from the 1920s and 1930s. The final section analyzes the WPA Guidebook to California as a federal attempt to re-map corporate space—the space of tourist attractions and consumers—according to a progressive ideal.     The Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) was designed in order to assess narrative skills in children who acquire one or more languages from birth or from early age. MAIN is suitable for children from 3 to 10 years and evaluates both comprehension and production of narratives. Its design allows for the assessment of several languages in the same child, as well as for different elicitation modes: Model Story, Retelling, and Telling. MAIN contains four parallel stories, each with a carefully designed six-picture sequence. The stories are controlled for cognitive and linguistic complexity, parallelism in macrostructure and microstructure, as well as for cultural appropriateness and robustness. The instrument has been developed on the basis of extensive piloting with more than 550 monolingual and bilingual children aged 3 to 10, for 15 different languages and language combinations. Even though MAIN has not been norm-referenced yet, its standardized procedures can be used for evaluation, intervention and research purposes. MAIN is currently available in the following languages: English, Afrikaans, Albanian, Basque, Bulgarian, Croatian, Cypriot Greek, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Standard Arabic, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, and Welsh.

The scene of the crash is now headed by a chapel and some reminiscenses of the crews' fate.     La littérature africaine d’expression française a pris depuis les années 1960 un tournant décisif où explosent le paradoxe, l’étrange, l’extraordinaire, l’outrecuidance, l’impertinence et toutes sortes de subversions de fond et de forme. Comme un cyclone esthétique et éthique, l’inspiration artistique en général, romanesque en particulier, souffle un vent libérateur exubérant dans les esprits qui semblent possédés par l’exaltation dionysiaque. Cet enthousiasme revêt les allures d’une véritable efflorescence baroque. On peut s’interroger sur l’utilisation du terme « baroque » qui s’applique à la littérature française sous Henri IV et Louis XIII, caractérisée par une grande liberté d’expression, et faisant contrepoids au classicisme et au réalisme. L’équilibre, la symétrie, la régularité manifestés dans les oeuvres d’art de la Renaissance européenne se sont altérés et compliqués pour de nombreuses causes dont les plus évidentes sont les guerres religieuses, l’accroissement de la richesse déclenché par les découvertes de l’or, et enfin le poids grandissant du surnaturel dans les esprits. L’art baroque a eu des représentants dans toute l’Europe. L’un des plus célèbres est l’Anglais Shakespeare [2]. La poésie, le théâtre et le roman ont souvent été baroques dans l’Europe des XVIe, XVIIè et XVIIIe siècles [3]. Au fond, à l’instar du romantisme, les traits ou éléments propres au baroque sont décelables chez des artistes de tout temps et de tout pays. Le baroque ne distingue pas uniquement les écrivains inclassables du fait qu’ils ne respectent pas les règles ordinaires ou classiques. Peuvent être qualifiés de baroques tous les auteurs africains qui ont le culte de tout ce qui est choquant, bizarre, excentrique et inattendu. Plus que tout autre créateur africain, le Congolais Sony Labou Tansi a cultivé le goût du baroque.     Depuis bientôt trois (3) ans, le Docteur Heméry-Hervais SIMA-EYI enseignant et directeur en outre, du Centre d’études pour la littérature gabonaise(CELIG) anime à la faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines, notamment au sein du département des Littératures Africaines de l’Université Omar Bongo, un séminaire intitulé « Littérature et société au Gabon » . Ce séminaire vise à étudier, analyser la littérature gabonaise dans ses rapports apparents avec la société dans laquelle cette littérature est produite. Pour ce faire, le Docteur SIMA-EYI a demandé à ses étudiants de voir, dans l’optique d’un colloque sur la littérature gabonaise , quelle place les institutions littéraires(maisons d’éditions, universités, centres de recherche, ministères, etc.)accordent à la littérature produite dans notre pays . Ainsi, scindée en deux(2) groupes,l’un dirigé par Guy Wilfried IDIATHA et l’autre par Désiré Clitandre DZONTEU, la classe de licence des Littératures Africaines s’est donc penchée sur cet épineux problème. Notre équipe s’est intéressée au groupe bancaire BICIG et son concours littéraire et artistique ; au Théâtre national ; aux maisons d’éditions entre autres, La Maison Gabonaise du Livre, Ndzé, Hilaire Makaya et les éditions du silence ; l’Union des écrivains gabonais(UDEG), l’Ecole Normale supérieure(ENS) et l’organisation des Nations unies pour l’éducation , la science et la culture(UNESCO).     Dans le cadre du Séminaire portant « sur la littérature et la société au Gabon », dirigé par monsieur SIMA EYI Hervais-Eméry, enseignant, Directeur-fondateur du Centre d’Etude en Littérature Gabonaise (CELIG), il a été demandé aux étudiants de faire des recherches et voir quelle place les institutions littéraires du Gabon accordait à la littérature gabonaise. Pour notre groupe, il s’est agit de se rendre dans les institutions telles que le Bureau Régional de l’Agence de la francophonie de l’Afrique Centrale (BRAC), Ministère de la culture, des arts et de l’éducation populaire, La Fondation Raponda WALKER, Le Centre Culturel Français ST- Exupéry de Libreville (CCF), La faculté des lettres et sciences humaines de l’Université Omar Bongo et L’Institut Pédagogique National (IPN). Notre objectif consistait à voir quel traitement ces institutions faisaient de la littérature gabonaise et comment elles s’y prenaient pour faciliter sa vulgarisation et sa promotion. Aussi , s’agissait-il d’étudier la nature des rapports ou des relations qui existent entre ces institutions et les écrivains gabonais, quelle place accordaient-elles à la littérature gabonaise et à ses écrivains, et comment procédaient -elles pour promouvoir cette littérature. --- CRELAF (Cercle de Reflexion des Etudiants en Littératures Africaines), Département de Littératures Africaines, Université Omar Bongo, Gabon
