    Of the 218 letters, 126 belong to correspondence with the Imperial Count Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, a dedicated patron of the supporters of Christian Wolff and the head of the Berlin chapter of the Society of Alethophiles. In Berlin and Leipzig great hopes were placed in the Prussian heir apparent Friedrich II, whom many saw a kind of Platonian "philosopher king" who would help elevate reason and Wolffian philosophy to new heights. The letters document the development of a rationalistic strain in Gottsched's sermons. They also provide insight into the satires of Wolff's opponents written by L.A.V. Gottsched. Gottsched's speeches concerning Martin Opitz and the "book printing anniversary" (Buchdruckjubiläum) found strong resonance in the correspondence and inspired letters concerning similar undertakings. Jakob Brucker's letters illuminate the planning and creation of the "Bilder-sal", a contemporary history of notable scholars that featured biographies and portraits, and which came to include Gottsched and his wife.

It serves to demonstrate how these monastic houses made use of the resources and contacts available to them. The study focuses on one of the richest medieval floor tile assemblages in the world, with material from 118 sites. Over 500 different designs and 60 mosaic arrangements have been identified. Jennie Stopford examines the monastic influence on northern England's manufacture and use of floor tiles. Split into three sections - Chronological Survey, The Tile Groups, and The Sites and Collections - this in-depth study covers an immense body of work.

The author of this volume believes that the key to understanding Ammianus`s work as a whole lies in his teaching of classical rhetoric, his metaphoric reading of landscapes, and the creation of spaces for memory and counterworlds to the Imperium Romanum.     I. S. Turgenev's predilection for the use of quotes, but also for allusions to other arts, such as painting or music, is not to be overlooked. Recent research has repeatedly pointed to the intertextuality of Turgenev. The novella "Faust" and the sketch "Gamlet Ščigrovskogo uezda" from the cycle "Zapiski ochotnika" are suitable objects of investigation inasmuch as they have significant similarities both in their intertextuality and in the structure of the text. The parallels begin with the clear marking of the intertextual reference in the title and range from similarities in the narrative form to thematic and argumentative equivalences. I. S. Turgenev's Vorliebe für die Verwendung von Zitaten, aber auch für Anspielungen auf andere Künste, etwa Malerei oder Musik, ist nicht zu übersehen. In der neueren Forschung ist wiederholt auf die Intertextualität bei Turgenev hingewiesen worden. Die Novelle "Faust" und die Skizze "Gamlet Ščigrovskogo uezda" aus dem Zyklus "Zapiski ochotnika" sind insofern geeignete Untersuchungsobjekte, als sie sowohl hinsichtlich ihrer Intertextualität als auch in der Textstruktur überhaupt deutliche Ähnlichkeiten aufweisen. Die Parallelen beginnen bei der eindeutigen Markierung des intertextuellen Bezuges im Titel und reichen über Gemeinsamkeiten in der Erzählform bis hin zu thematischen und argumentativen Äquivalenzen.

Jurij Trifonovs letzter großer Roman "Vremja i mesta", vom Autor selbst als sein bedeutendstes Werk verstanden, skizziert im Erleben epischer Figuren eine zeitgeschichtliche Epoche: Moskau, in der Zeit vom August 1937 bis Anfang 1980. In the United States, USDA films were shown in movie theaters, public and private schools at all educational levels, churches, libraries and even in open fields. For many Americans in the early 1900s, the USDA films were the first motion pictures they watched. And yet USDA documentaries have received little serious scholarly attention. The lack of serious study is especially concerning since the films chronicle over half a century of American farm life and agricultural work and, in so doing, also chronicle the social, cultural, and political changes in the United States at a crucial time in its development into a global superpower. Focusing specifically on four key films, Winn explicates the representation of African Americans in these films within the socio-political context of their times.

    This volume puts an emphasis on the question how children themselves experience and manage migration and by means of which they construct an identity for themselves which takes into account their experiences from both their places of origin and their host societies. What role does the cultural background of the society of origin on the one hand and the strategies of integration found in the host society on the other play in the creation of identity and of a concept of home, origin and belonging? How do children express processes of cultural orientation and integration (music, media, fashion, style) and what role do peer groups and social milieus play in this regard? How do migrant children experience xenophobia and a lack of acceptance on the side of the host society and how do they counter-balance such experiences? The approach taken is both comparative and interdisciplinary, the contributors having different theoretical and methodological backgrounds, the contributions dealing with different social and cultural settings both with regard to place of origin and host society.

Der interdisziplinär angelegte Band bereitet daher Theorie- und Wissensangebote aus verschiedenen Nachbardisziplinen für historiographische Zwecke auf und lotet zugleich anhand von Fallstudien das Verhältnis von Raum und Kommunikation im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert aus. Dabei steht nichts weniger als die Eignung von Raum als Zentralkategorie für eine neu zu konzipierende Kommunikationsgeschichte zur Disposition.
