    In this study, I take as my point of departure the idea that the shifts in women's social roles which occurred after the Great War and throughout the 1920s coincided with, and indeed made possible, formal shifts in women's writing. A change in social perspective occasions a change in literary perspective. However, these shifts did not result in an unhinged feeling of freedom and liberation for women. On the contrary, these writers attest to a double bind of propriety and permissiveness, of freedom and constraint, that comes through in their texts on a formal, the-matic, and affective level. The late modernist novels I examine testify to the fact that in order to "rise to the occasion," as Elizabeth Bowen describes the central challenge of modem life, one must be attuned to what is expected of one, to how one is viewed, to how one is judged, to how one feels, how one is to love, how one is to live. The essential fonction of perception, according to Merleau-Ponty, is "to lay the foundations of, or inaugurale, knowledge" (19). Through read-ings of the work of Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Rosamond Lehmann and Virginia Woolf, I argue that the senses become a tool for understanding how to navigate this constantly shifting social context. Each chapter concentrates on a way in which the authors considered articulate the tensions between the self and society through an attentive activation of the physical as well as knowledge-based senses. A major narrative strategy adopted by these writers, I will argue, is the bend back-- ramer than proceeding teleologically, their texts bend backward in a therapeutic attempt to revalue the present, or to understand how it came to be so, in a larger attempt to make sense of their moment and their role within it Cette étude prend comme point de départ l'idée que les changements survenus après la Première guerre mondiale dans le rôle social des femmes ont coïncidé avec, voire même facilité, des changements dans l'écriture des femmes auteures de l'époque. On peut en effet constater que des mutations sociales (d'ordre social) ont entraîné des mutations littéraires (d'ordre litttéraire). Pour autant, ces évolutions n'ont pas simplement fait advenir un sentiment de liberté chez les femmes. Au contraire, ces écrivaines mettent en oeuvre un paradoxe constant entre liberté et contrainte, permissivité et décorum, que l'on retrouve dans leurs textes sur un plan formel, thématique et affectif. Inscrits dans la période dite "late modem", les romans que j'examine témoignent du fait qu'il faut être sensible aux attentes qui pèsent sur soi afin de se montrer à la hauteur [rise to the occasion}, ainsi qu' Elizabeth Bowen décrit le défi central de la vie moderne. L'expérience féminine décrite par ces textes est une série d'attentes, de jugements et de questionnements nécessitant un développement supérieur des sens. La fonction essentielle de la perception, selon Merleau-Ponty, est de "fonder ou inaugurer la connaissance" (3). En étudiant des textes d'Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Virginia Woolf et Rosamond Lehmann, je souhaite montrer que les sens deviennent un outil qui permet d'évoluer au sein de ce contexte social en mutation perpétuelle. Chaque chapitre se concentre sur la façon dont ces auteures articulent des tensions entre le soi et la société en mobilisant des sens physiques ainsi que psychologiques. Le retour en arrière— the bend back—constitue l'une de leurs stratégies majeures : plutôt que de procéder de manière téléologique, leurs textes se retournent vers le passé, afin de comprendre son effet sur le présent et d'ainsi saisir le sens de leur propre inscription dans un moment historique

    Il aura fallu attendre que le christianisme ne structure plus la société pour que la littérature interroge, en toute liberté, les catégories de mystique et de sainteté, à travers des relectures ludiques, érotiques ou polémiques des Vies de saints. Au fur et à mesure que l'Orient et l'Occident se déchristianisent, que l'hagiographie est récupérée par les écrivains qui transforment et la soumettent à leurs objectifs propres, et que le sacré connaît une dilution proportionnelle à son extension - ce qui pose, nous le verrons, la question d'une sainteté de l'ordinaire -, la littérature paraît prendre progressivement le relais de la religion, ce qui implique un transfert de sacralité sur l'art. Le désenchantement du monde irait-il de pair paradoxalement, avec un certain enchantement littéraire ? L'art ne générerait-il pas, à son tour ses propres saints ? Si tant est qu'il y ait des croyants de la littérature, la véritable foi littéraire n'est-elle pas inséparable du blasphème ? Aussi interrogerons-nous les conditions de possibilité d'une théologie de la littérature aujourd'hui, à travers l'exploration du rapport paradoxal que Ia Modernité entretient avec le sacré et la sainteté It is only when Christianity ended shaping society that literature began to freely question the various categories of mystic and holiness through playful, erotic and controversial rewritings on the life of saints. In a era when Christianity gradually declines in various parts of the world when hagiography is taken over by writers who transform it and use it for their own purpose, in a time when the sacred fades away as much as it has spread - which, as we shall see, raise the question of secular holiness -, literature seems to succeed to religion, which implies that art turns out to be sacralized. We can wonder if the disenchantment of the world paradoxically goes hand in hand with a kind of literary enchantment. Does art, like religion, engender its own saints? If there are true believers in literature, then is it possible to dissociate real literary fait from blasphemy? Thus, we shall question the various conditions that may constitute a theology of contemporary literature, through the close scrutiny of the relationship between Modernity an the sacred and holiness

    En s'appuyant sur Tristram Shandy de Laurence Sterne, la thèse soutient que la littérature amorce l'intérêt philosophique porté par le 18ème siècle au concept d'identité. Après Locke et avec Hume, l'on ne croit plus guère au caractère immuable de l'identité. Celle-ci cesse d'être et l'homme s'effraie devant les immensités de ces virtualités. Le récit de vie se révèle tentative d'interroger la nature d'une individualité élusive. Aussi, le genre faussement autobiographique du roman impose-t-il comme une évidence de répondre à la question : qui "suis-je ?". Cette interrogation est reprise par le lecteur implicite qui s'immisce dans l'espace textuel à la fois pour figurer l'étranger avec lequel il faut bien compter mais surtout pour forcer à la réévaluation. Le concept d'identité s'envisage donc, en second lieu, sous l'angle du "qui es-tu ?". Cet étranger qui interroge sur soi dérange car c'est bien dans la démarche de se dire à lui que l'on se perd. Pourtant, la tentative de s'expliquer est le seul moyen d'y voir plus clair en soi. Il s'agit alors, dans un troisième temps, de s'intéresser à tout ce qui, dans la vie quotidienne, peut nourrir cette identité. Chaque anecdote, même banale, sert de révélateur et Tristram se laisse déplier à la manière d'une figure d'origami, indéfiniment. Reste que le temps, littéraire ou humain, ne peut contenir totalement une personnalité. L'identité d'un individu échappe partiellement à l'écriture et doit finalement s'envisager à l'échelle de l'humanité, dans quelque chose de l'ordre de ce que Kant aurait qualifié de "transcendantal", rendant la référence à l'humanité absolument nécessaire dans la définition du concept d'identité Relying on the novel Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne, the PhD insists on seeing literature as the starting point of the 18 th century's philosophical interest in the concept of identity. After Locke and with Hume, man can no longer rely on identity for stability. This triggers distress, partially soothed by writing one's life, an attempt to question the nature of an elusive individuality. As we are concerned here with the mock-autobiographic genre, we first logically endeavour to answer the question : "who am I ?". The enquiry is given further implications when reiterated by an implicit reader who functions as a kind of impediment, meddling with the textual space in order to figure the stranger every individual has to do with and imposing reassessment. It follows that the concept of identity is scrutinized from the "you" point of view, asking the question "who are you ?". The Other is disturbing, for it is in the attempt to say oneself that the self is diluted. However, portraying ones singularity is also the only way to reach a better understanding of oneself. The third turning point of the reflection is thus concerned with all that, in everyday life, nourishes this identity. It insists on the efficiency of the roundabout way and of apparently trifling details, leading to Tristram's indefinitely unfolding, in the manner of an origami. But time, be it a literary or a human time, never fully encapsulates a personality. Identity, when individual, eludes writing. In the end, it has to be apprehended at the level of the humanity, in something that Kant would have called "transcendental", making the reference to humanity necessary in the definition of the concept of identity

    En s'appuyant sur Tristram Shandy de Laurence Sterne, la thèse soutient que la littérature amorce l'intérêt philosophique porté par le 18ème siècle au concept d'identité. Après Locke et avec Hume, l'on ne croit plus guère au caractère immuable de l'identité. Celle-ci cesse d'être et l'homme s'effraie devant les immensités de ces virtualités. Le récit de vie se révèle tentative d'interroger la nature d'une individualité élusive. Aussi, le genre faussement autobiographique du roman impose-t-il comme une évidence de répondre à la question : qui "suis-je ?". Cette interrogation est reprise par le lecteur implicite qui s'immisce dans l'espace textuel à la fois pour figurer l'étranger avec lequel il faut bien compter mais surtout pour forcer à la réévaluation. Le concept d'identité s'envisage donc, en second lieu, sous l'angle du "qui es-tu ?". Cet étranger qui interroge sur soi dérange car c'est bien dans la démarche de se dire à lui que l'on se perd. Pourtant, la tentative de s'expliquer est le seul moyen d'y voir plus clair en soi. Il s'agit alors, dans un troisième temps, de s'intéresser à tout ce qui, dans la vie quotidienne, peut nourrir cette identité. Chaque anecdote, même banale, sert de révélateur et Tristram se laisse déplier à la manière d'une figure d'origami, indéfiniment. Reste que le temps, littéraire ou humain, ne peut contenir totalement une personnalité. L'identité d'un individu échappe partiellement à l'écriture et doit finalement s'envisager à l'échelle de l'humanité, dans quelque chose de l'ordre de ce que Kant aurait qualifié de "transcendantal", rendant la référence à l'humanité absolument nécessaire dans la définition du concept d'identité Relying on the novel Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne, the PhD insists on seeing literature as the starting point of the 18 th century's philosophical interest in the concept of identity. After Locke and with Hume, man can no longer rely on identity for stability. This triggers distress, partially soothed by writing one's life, an attempt to question the nature of an elusive individuality. As we are concerned here with the mock-autobiographic genre, we first logically endeavour to answer the question : "who am I ?". The enquiry is given further implications when reiterated by an implicit reader who functions as a kind of impediment, meddling with the textual space in order to figure the stranger every individual has to do with and imposing reassessment. It follows that the concept of identity is scrutinized from the "you" point of view, asking the question "who are you ?". The Other is disturbing, for it is in the attempt to say oneself that the self is diluted. However, portraying ones singularity is also the only way to reach a better understanding of oneself. The third turning point of the reflection is thus concerned with all that, in everyday life, nourishes this identity. It insists on the efficiency of the roundabout way and of apparently trifling details, leading to Tristram's indefinitely unfolding, in the manner of an origami. But time, be it a literary or a human time, never fully encapsulates a personality. Identity, when individual, eludes writing. In the end, it has to be apprehended at the level of the humanity, in something that Kant would have called "transcendental", making the reference to humanity necessary in the definition of the concept of identity
