Liz is a troubled woman, who read a violent story in a newspaper and cannot get it out of her head. This obsession drives away her partner Richard; or maybe he left because she was pregnant with Dan. Years later, when Dan is old enough to look after himself, he ends up looking after his mother, sourcing her drugs so she can escape the thoughts in her head. It is a venture doomed to failure; and his situation is not improved when Richard returns to meet his son. 'A Window: a Triptych' is a play about the cruelty that exists even when there is love. It was first staged at Golden Hillock School, Birmingham, in October 2009.

The classic wandering-poet archetype of the Expressionist movement receives a dark makeover in Bertolt Brecht's 'Baal'. Brecht's first full-length play portrays the seductions and manipulations of a dissolute poet with an inexplicable appeal to women. Baal descends from a civilised dining room to a hut in the woods, leaving a path of destruction in his wake. First performed in Leipzig in 1923, 'Baal' represents an early, almost pre-political stage in Brecht's career, and shows the playwright experimenting with elements that would become his trademarks, such as the use of song. Even as a young writer, however, Brecht provoked controversy: 'Baal' was immediately shut down by order of the city council of Leipzig.

First staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1994, 'Babies' is a warm-hearted, buoyant and very funny comedy about homosexuality and judgement in a working-class setting, centred on a 24 year-old Liverpudlian form tutor at a south-east London comprehensive. Alternately advising and battening down a group of 14 year-olds with a mixture of naivety and Scouse nous, he keeps his homosexuality a secret from the insult-slinging Year Nines. At home, he is flummoxed by his partner's reliance on drugs. Then there is a pupil's birthday party to negotiate: he has to fend off the advances of her rapacious, wisecracking mum, only to find himself entangled with her uncle.

First produced at the Royal Court Theatre in 1982, Sue Townsend's heartfelt comedy depicts 3 severely agoraphobic women who have left their houses for the first time in years, and made it to a jumble sale organised by their social workers, a young trainee and an ex-agoraphobic volunteer. As the afternoon progresses, the distinction between them and the anxious people they are supposed to be looking after becomes less and less clear; nerves and neuroses run high, and a sensitive portrait of the suffering behind their phobia emerges.

Upliftingly optimistic, Harvey's play about two teenage boys falling in love refuses melodramatic clichés to offer a story bright with sensitivity, pathos and wit. Sixteen-year-old Jaime lives with his mum Sandra and her younger boyfriend in a low-rise block of flats in Thamesmead, London. Living next door is the rowdy Leah, who has been expelled from school and spends her days sunning herself and listening to Mama Cass. And on the other side is Ste, also sixteen. His father's anger means that he often hides out in Jaime and Sandra's flat, spending the night there to escape being beaten. Ste and Jaime start off top-and-tailing in Jaime's bed, since there's nowhere else to sleep, and Harvey unfolds their tentative, awkward relationship with delicacy and with joy. The crisply authentic dialogue darts between aching, soul-searching emotion and sharp winning comedy, perfectly capturing the thrill of a first love. 'Beautiful Thing' was first performed in 1993 at the Bush Theatre, London.

First staged at the Almeida in 2011, 'Becky Shaw' is an amusing and cleverly constructed comedy about ambition, the cost of being truthful and the perils of a blind date. The fast and funny dialogue navigates between five distinctively perverse and disingenuously dysfunctional characters. From the moment that Becky arrives overdressed for her blind date with straight-talking Max, it is clear the evening won't go to plan. In the immediate fallout, Becky becomes an object of devotion for her boss Andrew, who appears to have a taste for vulnerable women. In turn Andrew's wife Suzanna turns to her step-brother Max for comfort, and their mutual desire begins to resurface. Gina Gionfriddo's masterful play is a biting American comedy with sharp, witty dialogue and a carefully crafted story arc. Character-driven, 'Becky Shaw' is a comic tale of tangled love lives and a subtle but acerbic comedy of manners.

'Bent', premiered in 1979 at London's Royal Court Theatre, is a shattering tragedy about the treatment of homosexual men under the Nazi regime; its raw, harrowing depiction of extreme persecution and punishment lifted briefly by human connection has become a theatrical classic. The play follows Max, who lives in Berlin with his partner Rudy, a dancer. On one cocaine-fuelled night he brings home a stranger, blond and into S&M, but wakes in the morning to find they have to get out of the city and disappear. Unable to get over the border and out of Germany, Max and Rudy are arrested and put on a train to Dachau. Max's morality, affection and humanity are pressed to terrible extremes, as Sherman provides an account of defiance and courage amidst unimaginable oppression.

For his whole adult life, David Hare has been visiting the city which so many young people regard as the most exciting in Europe. But there's something in Berlin's elusive character that makes him feel he's always missing the point. Now, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the reunification, he offers a meditation about Germany's restored capital - both what it represents in European history, and the peculiar part it has played in his own life. 'Berlin' premiered at the National Theatre, London, in February 2009.

'Epitaph for George Dillon', in which a mediocre artist is planted into the weed patch of petite bourgeois suburbia, absorbs and fascinates because it is a realistic modern drama which is not bourgeois in its underlying assumptions. It is like a familiar building caught at an angle which suddenly makes it look like something never seen before. It is the day of the Epsom Derby and Britain is gripped by racing fever. At Epsom Downs Racecourse, a magnificent cross-section of society gathers to watch the famous Derby race in which Lester Piggot rode 'The Minstrel' to a dramatic, photo-finish victory. Described by the Guardian as 'An exuberant documentary about a secular English Festival', 'Epsom Downs' was commissioned and first performed by Joint Stock theatre company at the Roundhouse, London, in 1977, directed by Max Stafford Clark.

A dissident is locked up in an asylum. If he accepts that he was ill and has been cured, he will be released. He refuses. Sharing his cell is a real lunatic who believes himself to be surrounded by an orchestra. As the dissident's son begs his father to free himself with a lie, Tom Stoppard's darkly funny and provocative play asks if denying the truth is a price worth paying for liberty. This premiered at the Festival Hall, London, in July 1977.

Death summons a man to the reckoning of his life, and his journey towards judgement makes up the matter of one of the best surviving examples of morality plays. Everyman, the central character of the play, is not a person but a place-holder representing all of mankind. As he converses with Knowledge, Good Deeds, Beauty and Goods, striving to secure a favourable account of his time on earth in order to reach everlasting life, a dramatic allegory is woven about the brevity of life and the necessity of living it well. The play is exceptional in its genre for this narrow focus on the last phase of life, and conveys its message with awe-inspiring seriousness.

The drama is set around a largely forgotten moment in British history - the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II. A naked young man washes up on a Guernsey beach. Unnervingly handsome, he is fluent in both German and English but has no recollection of who he is. Patriot or Nazi innocent, or madman, or does it depend entirely on your point of view? 'Gabriel' explores the heart of memory, identity and imagination, as well as the lies people tell themselves and each other to make the darkness light again. It was first performed at the Soho Theatre, London, in May 1997.

Three prisoners await the gas that will finally extinguish them, appearing here simply as nameless figures at their mortal end. The cold, last moments of their being are laid out as though on an undertaker's slab, last desperate prayers are uttered, and exchanges so pitiful and grasping are made in a desperate attempt to mean something. At the end comes not a prayer or scream, but the simple protestation of five simple, gasping, repeated statements of love.

In this sharp-witted satire on the ludicrous, dangerous endgame of commodification, Ben Elton pushes the logic of capitalism through to its ridiculous and alarming conclusion. 'Gasping', first presented in 1990 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, is a whirl of innuendo, an exuberant mockery of yuppie culture and a scintillating parody of corporate greed. When Philip is challenged by his boss to find a new way of making money from nothing, he invents the Suck and Blow machine and along with it the business of air. But as the market for oxygen grows, the world's supply is diminishing.

'Tender Napalm', first staged at London's Southwark Playhouse in 2011, is a high-impact, high-concept two handed play which explores the landscape that is a relationship between a man and a woman. Explosive, poetic and brutal, the play re-examines and redefines a savagely romantic language of love. Setting, character and narrative remain unspecified. Instead, 'Tender Napalm' is real time drama: simply two people dissecting their relationship through a distorted mixture of memory and imagination, monologues and conversations fusing into a strange and frantic fantasy of sex, violence, conflict and faith.

If you found God's number on a business card, would you call it? For Earl, the answer is yes. Seeking answers, he dials the number, hoping to reach a divine being. Instead, he discovers something altogether too familiar - bureaucracy. Before he sees God, there are countless hoops to jump through and forms to fill out, all pushed on him by inoffensive middlemen. Will he find God at the end of the tunnel? 'The Boy on the Swing' premiered at the Arcola Theatre, London, in 2011. Witty dialogue and cleverly plotted absurdity drive this unexpected journey into the nature of the divine and the mundane.
