'Herons' is a sensitive and mournful play about urban disaffection and brutality, a deeply affecting examination of vulnerability and violence. The play is set around Limehouse Cut and the Lee River in East London, by a sluggish and almost-lifeless canal, where 14 year-old Billy fishes every day. As he waits patiently for his usual catches, the miserable history of his life and the canal slowly emerges. 'Herons' premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2001.

'Her Vote' features a young suffragist whose plans to attend a political meeting are disrupted by an unexpected proposal from her young man. Her firm resolve to attend a suffrage meeting that night counts for nothing when a much more desirable offer arises ... The play provides an interesting male viewpoint on the movement, criticising the Girl for wanting to be part of a political movement without really knowing about it or understanding it. 'Her Vote' was first performed at Terry's Theatre, London, in May 1909.

'He Who Says No' forms a pair with 'He Who Says Yes', inspired by the Japanese Noh play 'Taniko', relating two different versions of a fable about consenting to a cause. The Boy demands to be taken by his teacher on a dangerous journey into the mountains, so that he can bring back medicine for his ill mother. The teacher acquiesces reluctantly, but when the boy can't go on, either he or the journey will have to be sacrificed. The didactic Lehrstc̈ke (or 'learning-plays') were written during 1929 and 1930, and show an abrupt rejection of most of the trappings of conventional theatre.

Harry is a literary agent, Louise a writer. They are young and happily married and are choosing a house in the country, an idyllic place where she can write, where small children will be happy, and where they can both relax. The local vicar, with some surprising revelations about faith, brings doubt into their smug existence. And, as the play moves on, and everyone grows up or grows older, country life seems to bring less and less joy and peace and proves to be quite the opposite of the idyll they envisage. 'Hidden Laughter' was first presented in June 1990 at London's Vaudeville Theatre.

Euripides' play tells the story of Phaidra's love for her step-son Hippolytos, Theseus's illegitimate son, a man so devoted to his chastity and the cult of Artemis that he spurns the goddess of love Aphrodite. To return the insult, she condemns him via his stepmother's passion, causing the subsequent fall of the royal house. A play that at once cautions people not to disregard the strength of the divine, but also illustrates the futility of trying to second-guess its intention, 'Hippolytos' is an astonishing and disturbing tragedy.

First performed in Northampton in 2010, this darkly comic monologue takes a journey across London towards a late-night epiphany, exploring the lies we tell ourselves and each other and the fallout when the truth is revealed. Moore's excoriating monologue breaks out of the deadlock of everyday life into a very real, relatable and bitingly comic fury of contemporary desperation.

'How the Vote Was Won' is set in the living room of Horace and Ethel Cole in Brixton, London, on the day of a general women's strike called by Suffragettes because the Government has said that women do not need votes as they are all looked after by men. All the women who have previously supported themselves agree to leave their jobs and homes and instead insist on support from their nearest male relative. As Horace's female relatives arrive at his house one after the other, he comes to realise something must be done and rushes to Parliament, to demand 'Votes for Women' as soon as possible. The play was first performed at the Royalty Theatre, London, in April 1909.

Set in the early noughties, 'Hurt Village' is the story of a community disregarded by the state. A housing project in North Memphis, originally developed in the 1950s to attract white residents, the area had, by the nineties, become a byword for poverty and drug-related crime. In 2000, the Memphis City government received a $35 million federal grant in order to redevelop the area, and in 2003, the neighbourhood was demolished, following the relocation of hundreds of black residents. The fourth of Hall's 'Memphis Plays', 'Hurt Village' premiered in New York in 2012.

In 1611 John Donne was living in a restless, changing world, in which a new Bible, a new science, and a decadent court tore at longstanding loyalties and deeply-held convictions. Unceasingly protean himself, Donne lived several lives at once, writing political tracts as well as popular songs, translating the 'Song of Solomon' at the same time as translating Galileo, and finding his rise in theological circles impeded by his colourful rakish past. At various times a politician, soldier, poet, musician, lawyer, courtier, theologian and cleric; a man born into one of England's most distinguished Catholic families who would die as one of its most renowned Protestants; Donne was always becoming something new. 'Into Thy Hands' is a portrait of this fascinating, eloquent and brilliant man, and his struggle to be faithful to all parts of his body and soul. First presented in 2011 at Wilton's Music Hall as part of Jericho House's 1611 Utopia season, 'Into Thy Hands' is a play about faith, sex and the translation of the Bible.

'King Henry IV Part 1' is the second play in Shakespeare's Henriad tetralogy, following on from 'King Richard II'. The play was first printed in the First Quarto of 1598 (Q1), as 'The History of Henrie the Fovrth ... '. It seems that it was an extremely popular play as it was reissued in a second edition in the same year, a rare occurrence. The Arden text is taken from Q1 and from Q0, the surviving fragment of the quarto from which Q1 appears to have been taken. The action of the play is based on part of the king's reign, from 1402-3, and deals extensively with the idea of kingship.

'King Richard III' is the final play of Shakespeare's first tetralogy, the culmination of the War of the Roses and the inception of the Tudor dynasty. The play picks up where 'Henry VI Part 3' left off, with the Lancastrian king dead and the house of York in the ascendant. The play first appears in the 1597 first Quarto (Q1). By the 1623 First Folio (F), the play is catalogued in the Histories section. F is significantly longer than Q1, with manifold textual differences; this edition incorporates both, generally deferring to F.

'Life support' is set in a London hospital room where Gwen Golding lies unconscious, on a life-support machine. Her husband Jeff is a writer: they were on a trip in Guadeloupe when Gwen was stung by a bee and collapsed. Technically she is still alive. The young doctor is a master of the meaninglessly upbeat bedside chat, full of wise saws and the latest instances of miraculous recovery. The awesome air of clinical efficiency and noncommittal optimism cannot hide the fact that nobody knows what to do or what to expect. 'Life Support' was premiered at London's Aldwych Theatre in August 1997.

Charles Dickens, forty-five years old and married, falls passionately in love with Nelly Ternan, an actress almost 30 years his junior. After a long affair which ends only with Dickens' death in 1870, Nelly marries and has two children, but she carries with her thirteen clandestine years to explain away. In 1922, her son resolves to uncover the truth. Inspired by Claire Tomalin's book 'The Invisible Woman', 'Little Nell' is an enthralling play about the great Victorian novelist, his little-known mistress and their legacy. It was first presented at the Theatre Royal, Bath, in June 2007.

'Major Barbara' is a play about power, religion and capital: Shaw's story of a conversion contest between an arms manufacturer and a Salvation Army Major is a provocative dramatization of the relationship between money and morality, exposing the material reality behind the political and moral philosophies of the time. 'Major Barbara' is a challenging comedy of ideals which subverts ideals and moral expectations, following a three act structure intended to advance understanding by stages as per Shaw's dialectic method. It was first produced in 1905 at the Royal Court, London.

Half comic and half serious, 'Marriage A-la-Mode' is a spirited study of the trials and passions of love and marriage, a blend of satire and true romance. The play is set in the Sicilian court, and consists of a comic plot written in prose, and a tragic plot written in verse. The comic plot wittily explores the fluttering courtly mode of romance. The serious plot, by contrast, offers a timeless understanding of love and marriage as deeply intertwined, and of love as springing from country innocence and honour, and not from the social intriguing of shallow courtiers.
