It is a Sunday morning. Jimmy Porter and his friend are going through the papers, from time to time scornfully reading out bits while Alison works busily at the ironing board. Déjàvu? It is not 1956, but a generation later. John Osborne returns to the characters from 'Look Back in Anger' in a savage and brilliant exploration of Britain, thirty years on. 'Déjàvu' was first performed at the Thorndike Theatre, Leatherhead, in May 1992.

'Derek' is a short farce with the significance of social commentary, telling a story of waste and exploitation. The play is a comic but sharp critique of social stratifications which allow those with a privileged background to steal the life and self of those less fortunate, and send them to die in wars they do not understand. 'Derek' was first performed in 1982 at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Youth Festival at The Other Place, Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Terese and Louise are on their way to a 'pot-pourri' party: a place where, Terese assures Louise, there will be straight people to talk to. Louise is tired of hanging out with Terese's lesbian-only crowd, and is not expecting much. So when she meets the handsome J.J. she gets more, perhaps, than she'd bargained for. An examination of the roles that gender and sexuality play in the already complex world of love among friends, 'Designs for Living' was first produced at the Drill Hall, London.

1947. The twilight of Empire in India. Sergeant Turner and his Colonel share a bottle of whisky in reluctant celebration of Independence. 'Do you think Mr Churchill will do anything about it, sir? When the conservatives get back in?' 1976. A by-election in the West Midlands against the background of an industrial dispute involving Asian labour. A three-cornered fight between Labour, Conservative (candidate: the Colonel's nephew) and the up and coming National Forward party (candidate: Sergeant, now Mr. Turner) - a contest in which the issue of race cuts like a razor through the conventional cosy assumption of British politics, with alarming and prophetic results.

'Detaining Justice' is an interrogatory play about illegal immigration and race, in which the urgent issues are brought to life with humour and compassion. In the offices of the immigration authorities, inside the detention centres, and out in the world where illegal immigrants are working, Agbaje examines Britain's tangled immigration system and the lives of those who slip through the cracks. 'Detaining Justice' was first performed as part of the 'Not Black and White' season at the Tricycle Theatre, London, in 2009.

Aged 18, three women join forces. Life is fun. Living is intense. Together they feel unassailable. 'Di and Viv and Rose' charts the steady but sometimes chaotic progression of these three women's lives and their ultimately enduring bonds. The varied journeys of their lives take their toll on the characters, forcing them apart and stretching their relationships with each other to a near breaking point. 'Di and Viv and Rose', which premiered at the Hampstead Theatre in 2011, is a humorous and thoughtful exploration of friendship's impact on life and life's impact on friendship.

Originally produced on an RSC tour of America in 1985 and revised for a 1987 London production in 1987, 'Did You Hear the One About the Irishman ...?' is a painful love story divided by sectarianism, and punctuated by the tasteless racist jokes of an anti-Irish comedian. As both families oppose the desired marriage of a Protestant girl and a Catholic boy the play parallels scenes, doubling characters to bring together two groups impossibly divided. The young couple's brilliant optimistic hope that they will rise above the feud becomes heartbreaking as the play shows that the perpetuation of conflict is more powerful than either of them.

First produced at Leicester's Haymarket Studio in 1995, 'Disappeared' is a tense flickering mystery thriller revolving around the unexplained exit of a woman from a Manhattan bar. The conversation between the woman and the peculiar man last seen with her is interwoven with the scenes which follow her disappearance: press conferences appealing for information; police interrogations of the man and his impassive reaction; the grief of the woman's mother. The elliptical structure endows Nagy's play with a rich tension, and the characters' need for escape gives it a final, elusive beauty.

London in the 1980s: a racist English football hooligan's relationship with his beloved pitbull terrier, Roy, gets him into trouble and changes his life. This short one-man show takes a satirical look at the working class and the similarities between the doggedness of a terrier and the doggedness of a violent lout, ultimately bringing out the loneliness and isolation beneath. 'Dog' premiered (under the title 'Pitbull') at the Warehouse Theatre, Croydon, in August 1993.

Peter finds the idea of sitting at his desk in a publishing house considerably less attractive than attempting to seduce a free-lance cover designer while his wife is out teaching English to foreigners and shopping at Sainsbury. 'Dog Days' is about the sad and hilarious consequences of Peter's disenchantment with his job, his wife, his public schoolmaster brother and himself. The play is a companion piece to 'Otherwise Engaged' and has the same remarkable blend of wit and pathos, humour and despair. 'Dog Days' was first performed in October 1976 at the Oxford Playhouse.

'Drag Act' is a proud and punchy monologue spoken by Rose, a fifty-two year old lesbian who cannot stand being told how she should dress. She was told by her mother that she should be more girly and feminine, and now she finds she is being told that she is letting down 'the Cause' by wearing trousers; she is sick of people thinking she's trying to be a man. So she is reluctant when her new younger girlfriend Sarah insists they go to a drag club for her birthday, until she realises that among the sequins and the feathers are people just like her. 'Drag Act' was first presented in 1993 at the Grand Theatre, Blackpool.

Charlie is that modern media phenomenon, an a list celebrity. Mobbed and adored by thousands, his face is everywhere, his name on everything from breakfast cereals to sports gear. He is truly the man who has it all. a beautiful wife, wonderful children, immense wealth and a magnificent home. Everyone is agreed that Charlie Conrad is undoubtedly the man to know and be associated with. What is far more difficult to pin down is what precisely it is that has made Charlie so famous. What has Charlie ever done? Indeed, has he ever done anything? and, in the distorting, mirrored world of celebrity hype, does anyone even care? 'Drowning on Dry Land' was premiered at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in 2004.

It has been four years since Anna's fiancé, Andreas, was declared missing in action in the trenches of World War I. Therefore, she is understandably shocked when he reappears. Andreas discovers that in his absence, Anna has agreed to marry a man who became rich dealing in the black market during the war. This 'anti-romantic' love story is set against the Spartacist uprising of 1919, an attempt by the German Communist party to destabilise the Weimar government. 'Drums in the Night' was an immediate success when first performed in 1922, and went on to play all over Germany, but Brecht later admitted that he only wrote the play to make money.

The newly acquired wardrobe filling most of the living room of the Godboys' decaying house seems unnecessarily large for most purposes. Eric and Doris upstairs could manage without one, surely. Whatever scheme Mr Godboy has in mind, however, he does seem to be going about it the hard way; and it certainly sits oddly with his apparent worship of the police force and all it stands for. It's not entirely clear, either, why he married May Godboy in the first place. There's little satisfaction for her in the relationship. 'Dutch Uncle' was first performed at the Aldwych Theatre, London, in March 1969.

The Royal Court Theatre produced Bond's surreal drama 'Early Morning' in 1967 despite a total ban by the Lord Chamberlain's office. It portrays a lesbian relationship between Queen Victoria and Florence Nightingale, the royal princes as Siamese twins, Disraeli and Prince Albert plotting a coup and the whole dramatis personae damned to a cannibalistic heaven after falling off Beachy Head.

It is London in the 1970s and Mike, Les and Sylv are fighting for their youth. Filling their days with sex and violence, they battle both the boredom they fear and the inevitable future they see in their parents, ultimately finding that history is doomed to repeat itself. 'East' offers a stylised and humorous examination of the violence and uncertainty of growing up in the east end of London. It premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in August 1975.

'Easy Access (For The Boys)' is a hard-hitting and uncomfortable play about victims of child abuse, and the challenging complexity of their relationships with their abusers. Michael and his friend Gary were both sexually abused by their fathers. Michael, a young prostitute, is making a video diary with Gary's help - an attempt to understand his past and the lies he has been told by his father and by himself. When his dad gets a new assistant and she and her young son move in with him, Michael's determination to protect the child leads him to revisit the past in more ominous detail. Mixing video footage and on-stage conversations, this is a story of blame, love and confusion, in which the sufferings of the past spill over into the rage of the present. 'Easy Access (For The Boys)' premiered at the Drill Hall in 1998.

In 'Easy Virtue', John Whittaker brings home his new wife for the first time. Some years older than her husband, Larita is a woman of class, beauty and experience, with a worldview, we find, in stark contrast to the single-minded morality of her new sisters- and mother-in-law. At first a tense truce reigns, but after a summer of boredom and mental lassitude, Larita is confronted with the facts of her past: scandalous according to her outraged in-laws; but mere truth to Larita, who refuses to be brow-beaten into hypocrisy by the priggish social system of her new relations. 'Easy Virtue' was first performed in New York in 1926.

Simon Armitage was commissioned in 1996 by the National Theatre in London to write 'Eclipse' for the BT National Connections Scheme for young people. The play was inspired by the real-life disappearance of a girl in Hebden Bridge, and set at the time of the 1999 solar eclipse in Cornwall. Six friends are interviewed by the police after the disappearance of Lucy Lime, the strange unnerving girl whom they met on the beach beneath the cliffs. Each in turn goes into an interview room and makes a statement about the version of events which is either the one being remembered or the one being created. Between the monologues there is a series of flashbacks to the day when the eclipse occurred and Lucy Lime appears and disappears. 'Eclipse' was first produced at the Cottesloe Theatre in London in 2004.
