Bertolt Brecht continues to be regarded as one of the twentieth century's most controversial and influential writers. His life and work raise important questions about the nature and function of literature and theater, about perception and commitment, about feminist approaches to politics and literature, and about intellectual property rights. The Brecht Yearbook is a venue for discussion about aspects of theater and literature that were of particular interest to Brecht, especially the politics of literature and the politics of theater in a global context. This volume includes a specialsection of five articles focused on Bertolt Brecht and Georg Büchner, revolutionary playwright of an earlier era. Also featured are articles and keynote addresses from the International Brecht Society symposium held in Brazil in 2013, under the theme "The Creative Spectator." New research on Brecht and Puccini, Brecht and tragedy, and George Tabori's play Nathans Tod rounds out the volume, along with reviews of recent books and Jost Hermand's tribute to Werner Mittenzwei

Sophie and Calliope have never been to school. Their mum ran away from home when she was seventeen to join the New Age movement and the girls were raised in a series of ashrams, communes and impromptu raves. When Sophie gets ill, they return to Birmingham - a strange new world where meditation and tree-hugging are replaced with maths homework and TV and the grandmother they have never met. And it's against this bewildering new backdrop - the normality she's always longed for - that Sophie must come to terms with her mortality.

Set in the office of a small political pressure group for open government, 'Now You Know', first produced in 1995, is a satirical comedy about the aftermath of a police cover-up. Mr Hassam has beaten himself to death, according to the Home Office. When a mysterious envelope arrives at the office with information revealing the guilt of the police, Terry Little wants to blow the scandal wide open and leak the document to the press. If he can find time, that is, between living with Jacqui at weekends, conducting an illicit liaison with Hilary in the evenings, and keeping the rest of the staff from finding out.

It's 1348 and the Black Death is raging throughout England. Fed up with feudal society, William leaves home to earn his living as a free man and is received into a company of players and tricksters. For these men, the plague offers many lucrative opportunities, from acting as the servants of crusading knights whose men-in-waiting have fled to looting from the dead. It's also 1948 in David Edgar's metatheatrical play about humanity's response to pandemic suffering. A group of actors are rehearsing a morality play about the plague in a bombed-out church. As they assume their parts and death masks, they are transformed into the motley community living six hundred years previously.

Over 10,000 different smells drift across our planet in various configurations. 'Olfactory' gives you a choice to craft your identity and to decode the invisible molecules floating through the air. Who do you want to be in the future? This short play explores our invisible relationship with perfumes and smell, through a one-on-one performance, encased in a beautiful piece of architecture. The experience was originally presented as part of the Lyric Hammersmith's 'Theatre in the Square' season in 2012.

Leonard and Violet, young, restless and in love, spend their first night together knowing it may also be their last. It's 1942 and, in a hotel room in Bath, they dream of their future while preparing for Leonard's departure to the war. But the bombs begin to fall and their world will never be the same again. In the year 2002, the couple look back at what might have been. Examining the impact of the Second World War on two ordinary lives and a love that spans more than sixty years, 'One Day When We Were Young' premiered at the Crucible Studio, Sheffield, in October 2011.

The hero of 'Otherwise Engaged' only prefers brevity when he cannot have complete silence - or rather a silence filled with music. Everything in the play flows from that simple fact. This treacherous relationship between stage presence and page absence was illustrated by the response of the play's first producer who nearly rejected it on the grounds that there was no main part. 'Otherwise Engaged' was premiered at the Queen's Theatre, London, in July 1975.

Pacarel made his wealth in the sugar industry and wants to premiere an opera composed by his daughter, who 'rewrote Faust after Gounod'. To fulfil this objective, he asks his friend Dufausset who lives in Bordeaux to engage Dujeton, a well known tenor from the Bordeaux Opera. But instead of Dujeton, it is the son of Dufausset who comes. He is coming to Paris to study law. Pacarel mistakes him for Dujeton and signs a contract with him, leading to a series of misunderstandings. Feydeau's three-act comedy was premiered in September 1892 at the Théâtre Déjazet.

'Pot and Kettle' tells the story of young Marjorie, a newly signed-up member of the Anti-Suffrage movement, whose parents are delighted at the decision she has taken, hoping that by joining, she will meet lots of respectable and well-to-do people. They are thus in shock to see her return from a rally in floods of tears. It turns out that she has been arrested for assaulting a Suffragette, Lady Susan Pengarvon. 'Pot and Kettle' was first performed at the Scala Theatre, London in November 1909.

'Realism' follows the life of one man during an ordinary day but veers off from the commonplace to become a deliriously surreal trip inside his wayward imagination. The play's shifting, baffling scenes dive inside the mind of Stuart, as the banalities of a wasted Saturday - telly, laundry, toast, cup of tea - spin out into a series of surreal conversations with politicians, a telephone salesman and a foul-mouthed child from the seventies. His real interactions, with his friend and ex-girlfriend and parents, slide down into strange expressions of his darker subconscious and secret thoughts.

After a one-night stand with an old flame from America, Vicky loses interest in Clive. Hurt by the betrayal, Clive sleeps with Mo, a waitress from a local café. She in turn is modelling for Clay, the draft-dodging American photographer whose visits up and down the country find him in both Vicky's and Mo's beds. The chain of infidelity and promiscuity is uncovered when all four contract the 'Saigon Rose', the slang term used by American GIs during the Vietnam War for gonorrhoea. As the infection spreads, the modern `American' values represented by Clay are also transmitted, corrupting the relationships which connect these four characters.
