Moses ben Abraham Darʿī, born in Alexandria into a family of Moroccan Jewish immigrants, lived in Egypt in the middle of the twelfth century. Though he visited Damascus and Jerusalem, he spent most of his professional life as a physician and poet in the Karaite community of Fusṭāṭ-Cairo. This study offers an annotated edition of secular poems taken from the earliest manuscript, NLR Evr. I 802, dated to the fifteenth century. The Hebrew text and Judaeo-Arabic heading of each poem are provided in the original order attested in the manuscript. The introduction to this edition seeks to evaluate Darʿī’s poetry in the light of the Andalusian-Hebrew poetical tradition and within the context of Hebrew literary activity in the Muslim East. “This learned book displays sound, rigorous scholarship in the best tradition of the philological-historical method… It also provides solid ground for further work by scholars with different agendas, different scholarly interests and different methodologies in the study of medieval Hebrew poetry.     When first published in 1979, Haim Be'er's Feathers was a critical and commercial success, ushering in a period of great productivity and expansiveness in modern Hebrew literature. Now considered a classic in Israeli fiction the book is finally available to English readers worldwide. In this, his first novel, Be'er portrays the world of a deeply religious community in Jerusalem during the author's childhood and adolescence in the 1950s and 60s. The novel is filled with vivid portraits of eccentric Jerusalem characters, chief among them the book's main character, Mordecai Leder, who dreams of founding a utopian colony based on the theories of the nineteenth-century Viennese Jewish thinker Karl Popper-Lynkeus. Similar high-flying dreams inspire the family of the narrator, strict Orthodox Jews with impractical minds and adventurous souls-men such as the narrator's father, who periodically disappears from home on botanical expeditions meant to prove that the willow tree of Scripture is in fact the Australian eucalyptus. Experimental in structure and mood, Feathers features kaleidoscopic jumps in time, back and forth in the narrator's memories from boyhood to adulthood. Its moods swing wildly from hilarity to the macabre, from familial warmth to the loneliness of adolescence. Jerusalem and its inhabitants, as well as the emotional life of the narrator, are splintered and reconstituted, shattered and patched. This fragmentation, combined with a preoccupation with death and physical dissolution and dreamlike flights of imagination, evokes an Israeli magical realism.Feathers was chosen one of the 100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature by the National Yiddish Book Center.

    "Medieval Italy presented a rich array of discrete textual cultures, many of them specific to particular regions, professions, or groups of writers and readers. The essays in this collection consider how distinct habits of writing took root among specific communities in Italy between the early Middle Ages and the eve of the Renaissance. In examining how ideological concerns helped give shape to strategies of writing and how forms of communication influenced cultural developments, these case studies assess a wide range of texts, including legal treatises, saintly biographies, rhetorical handbooks, and vernacular poetry. As a whole, the collection makes the case for combining abstract analyses such as textual theory and intellectual history with more technical specialties such as editing and codicology.     Welche christologischen und soteriologischen Vorstellungen wurden im Neuen Testament mit der Bezeichnung Jesu als Opfer und der Rede von Sühne vermittelt? Weit verbreitet ist derzeit die Auffassung, es gehe um Jesu stellvertretenden Sühnetod. Diese Motive bereiten heutzutage nicht nur Verständnisprobleme. Viele finden sie anstößig, da sich mit ihnen problematische Vorstellungen wie gewaltsame Tötung und das Bild eines strafenden Gottes zu verbinden scheinen. Christian A. Eberhart untersucht mittels detaillierter traditionsgeschichtlicher Studien kultische Metaphern und Redewendungen des Neuen Testaments vor dem Hintergrund alttestamentlicher und frühjüdischer Texte zu Opferritualen. Er zeigt unter anderem, dass sich das Opfermotiv im Neuen Testament nicht allein auf Jesu Tod, sondern auch auf dessen Leben und gesamte Mission bezieht. Außerdem ist kultische Sühne durch die Vorstellung eines stellvertretenden Todes nicht angemessen beschrieben; sie assoziiert vielmehr ein Heilsgeschehen auf der konzeptionellen Grundlage kultischer Reinigung und Weihe. What are the Christological and soteriological contents of the metaphor of the sacrifice of Jesus and the concept of atonement in the New Testament? Do they communicate the vicarious death of Jesus, as many suggest today? These metaphors and concepts, however, are not only difficult to comprehend; they are often considered offensive due to alleged implications such as violent killing and the image of a vengeful God. Christian A. Eberhart tackles this problem in his careful and detailed study of cult metaphors and concepts in the context of New Testament Christology. By relating them to Old Testament and early Jewish traditions of sacrificial rituals, he shows that the metaphor of the sacrifice of Jesus does not necessarily convey the violent death of Jesus, but his entire mission and life. Nor is the cultic concept of atonement based on vicarious killing; it expresses salvation through purification and consecration.

Moses ben Abraham Darʿī, born in Alexandria into a family of Moroccan Jewish immigrants, lived in Egypt in the middle of the twelfth century. Though he visited Damascus and Jerusalem, he spent most of his professional life as a physician and poet in the Karaite community of Fusṭāṭ-Cairo. This study offers an annotated edition of secular poems taken from the earliest manuscript, NLR Evr. I 802, dated to the fifteenth century. The Hebrew text and Judaeo-Arabic heading of each poem are provided in the original order attested in the manuscript. The introduction to this edition seeks to evaluate Darʿī’s poetry in the light of the Andalusian-Hebrew poetical tradition and within the context of Hebrew literary activity in the Muslim East. “This learned book displays sound, rigorous scholarship in the best tradition of the philological-historical method… It also provides solid ground for further work by scholars with different agendas, different scholarly interests and different methodologies in the study of medieval Hebrew poetry.
