    St Peter's, Barton-upon-Humber, is a redundant medieval church in the care of English Heritage. As a result of a major program of research carried out between 1978 and 2007, it is now the most intensively studied parish church in the UK. Excavations between 1978 and 1984 investigated most of the interior of the building, as well as a swathe of churchyard around its exterior. At the same time, a stone-by-stone record and detailed archaeological study of the fabric and furnishings of the church was undertaken, continuing down to 2007. The twin aims of the project were to understand the architectural history and setting of this complex, multi-period building (Volume 1, Parts 1 and 2) and to recover a substantial sample of the population for palaeopathological study (Volume 2). An extensive program of historical and topographical research also took place in order to set the archaeological evidence firmly in context.

    Transcultural Modernisms is based on the findings of an interdisciplinary research project with focus on modernist architectural projects realized in the era of decolonization. It maps out the network of encounters, transnational influences, and local appropriations of an architectural modernity manifested in various ways in housing projects in India, Israel, Morocco, and China that served as exemplary standard models, not only for Western societies. The emphasis in Transcultural Modernisms is on the exchanges and interrelations among international and local actors and concepts, a perspective in which "modernity" is not passively received, but is a concept in circulation, moving in several different directions at once, subject to constant renegotiation and reinterpretation. Modernism is not presented as a universalist and/or European project, but as marked by cultural transfers and their global localization and translation.

    Die Kunstsammlung der Universität Göttingen ist vor allem für ihren Bestand an Niederländischer Kunst des 17. Jahrhunderts bekannt. Dass sie darüber hinaus auch eine Kollektion von Gemälden des 19. Jahrhunderts umfasst, die einige wirkliche Schätze enthält, gleicht einer Neuentdeckung. Diese Kollektion wird hier erstmals in einem eigenen Bestandskatalog vorgestellt. Obwohl es sich um eine eher kleine Sammlung handelt, erweist sich diese doch als erstaunlich repräsentativ, um das Kunstverständnis des 19. Jahrhunderts mit seinen wechselnden Prämissen sowie kunsttheoretischen und künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen an konkreten Kunstwerken aufzuzeigen. Eine zentrale Rolle spielt dabei die Gattungstheorie: Die seit der Frühen Neuzeit vertretene Ausdifferenzierung der Malerei in profane und religiöse Historie, Genre, Landschaft, Stillleben, Tierstück und Porträt wurde über das gesamte 19. Jahrhundert hinweg kontrovers diskutiert, blieb aber als wertsetzendes System lange präsent. Der vorliegende, von Dozenten und Studierenden des Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminars der Universität Göttingen gemeinsam erarbeitete Bestandskatalog nutzt die Gattungstheorie als „roten Faden“, um eine historische Perspektive auf den Bestand der Gemälde des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Göttinger Universitätskunstsammlung anzubieten.

    The preternatural, as explored by these artists, disturb the ontological boundaries of art, nature and metaphysics. They exist within the folds of classificatory thresholds: both beyond and between nature and supernature; human and animal; vegetable and mineral; living and dead. The confusion between animate and inanimate is a primary concern, a surreality which unites with the preternatural’s love for reveling in the mysterious: bizarre fragments, unreadable words, objects of absurd scale, and distortions of the relativity of time and space flourish throughout this exhibition. Preternatural is the catalogue for a multi-site art exhibition (9 December 2011 through 17 February 2012, in Ottawa, Canada) that draws from the idea that art itself is a form of preternatural pursuit, in which the artists participating explore the bewildering condition of being in between the mundane and the marvelous in nature. It questions a world that understands itself as accessible, reachable, and ‘knowable’ and counters it with a consideration of this heterogenous proposition.

The essays of Poetry's Afterlife blend memoir, scholarship, and personal essay to survey the current poetry scene, trace how we arrived here, and suggest where poetry is headed in our increasingly digital culture.     The man of blue landscapes describes the life and work of the Finnish geographer Johannes Gabriel Granö (1882–1956), whose career also reflected Finland’s development as a modern state. Granö was a scientific explorer, writer, a pioneer of Finnish photographic art and a professor of geography at the universities of Tartu (Estonia), Helsinki and Turku. In Estonia he applied scientific method to the study of local history and from Tartu brought the tradition of urban research. Granö spent much of his youth in Omsk in western Siberia, where his father worked as a priest among displaced and deported Finns and Estonians. From 1906 to 1916 Granö made an expedition to Mongolia and the Altai mountains, but his fieldwork remained unfinished when the 1917 revolution broke out, the area was then closed to Western scholars for 70 years. Among Granö’s most important works are the classic travel book Altai, vaellusvuosina nähtyä ja elettyä (‘The Altai, seen and experienced during my years of travel’, 1921) and his methodological masterpiece Puhdas maantiede (‘Pure geography’, 1930). In it Granö outlined a theory of landscapes, and the book was a pioneering work ahead of its time: landscape was examined in terms of the relation between human beings and their environment, as the sum of all the senses.

Fashionable in the age of Wilde, the Mask changes shape until it emerges as Mask in the system of A Vision. Chronologically tracing the concept through Yeats’s plays and those poems written as ‘texts for exposition’ of his occult thought which flowers in A Vision itself (1925 and 1937), the volume also spotlights ‘The Mask before The Mask’ numerous plays including Cathleen Ni-Houlihan, The King’s Threshold, Calvary, The Words upon the Window-pane, A Full Moon in March and The Death of Cuchulain. There are excurses into studies of Yeats’s friendship with the Oxford don and cleric, William Force Stead, his radio broadcasts, the Chinese contexts for his writing of ‘Lapis Lazuli’. His self-renewal after The Oxford Book of Modern Verse, and the key occult epistolary exchange ‘Leo Africanus’, edited from MSS by Steve L.     Das in der vorliegenden Arbeit verfolgte Ziel ist es, die Zeitung 'Bälgarija' und ihre journalistischen Kontrahenten als literarische Denkmäler der frühen bulgarischen Wiedergeburt zu betrachten und nicht bloß als rein historische Quellen. Zu der Zeit, als die 'Bälgarija' erschien, waren die bulgarischen Zeitungen bzw. Zeitschriften noch die eigentliche "Literatur" der erst im Entstehen begriffenen neubulgarischen Schriftsprache. Zudem waren die ersten bulgarischen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften das einzige Medium, durch welches die erst in geringer Zahl vorhandenen genuin bulgarischen literarischen Werke publiziert werden konnten. Genau an diesem Punkt setzt die vorliegende Arbeit an: Die hier besprochene Auseinandersetzung zwischen (?) fünf Zeitungen bzw. Zeitschriften soll vor dem objektiven historischen und sachlichen Hintergrund in all ihrer gepfefferten Polemik, in ihren mit Leidenschaft geführten Streitgesprächen, mit all ihrer Unbekümmertheit und Naivität betrachtet werden.

Jahrhundert. Nach einer synthetisierenden Studie werden im chronologisch und nach regionalen Varietäten gegliederten Wörterbuch in mehr als 3 500 Wörterbuchartikeln über 15 000 einzelne Wortformen analysiert und ihre Erstbelege angeführt.     For decades, NGOs targeting world hunger focused on ensuring that adequate quantities of food were being sent to those in need. In the 1990s, the international food policy community turned its focus to the “hidden hunger” of micronutrient deficiencies, a problem that resulted in two scientific solutions: fortification, the addition of nutrients to processed foods, and biofortification, the modification of crops to produce more nutritious yields. This hidden hunger was presented as a scientific problem to be solved by “experts” and scientifically engineered smart foods rather than through local knowledge, which was deemed unscientific and, hence, irrelevant.

     

    In Hidden Hunger, Aya Hirata Kimura explores this recent emphasis on micronutrients and smart foods within the international development community and, in particular, how the voices of women were silenced despite their expertise in food purchasing and preparation.
