Current demographic changes require a paradigm shift in the delivery of health and social services. Wide-scale implementation of validated ICT support to clinicians and patients is essential to ensure the quality of services to future generations of citizens. Healthcare providers from four European regions - Turkey, Portugal, Campania and Murcia- have joined forces to procure an innovative ICT solution for patient empowerment and self-management for patients with diabetes mellitus. The procurement is in the form of a joint pre-commercial procurement (PCP) of Research & Development, with participation by EU industry in competitive phases of development. The PCP is part of the EU-funded project ProEmpower, which is currently in the prototype testing phase. The challenge faced by the procurers was to jointly define specifications for the envisioned solution that reflect the needs of all four regions. After an intensive year of consultations with procurers' experts - clinicians, IT staff, procurement specialists - ProEmpower launched a call for tender with the defined specifications, which reflect the unmet needs across the procuring regions with regards to improving management of diabetes mellitus supported by ICT. This paper presents the ProEmpower specifications, which can be easily adapted to the local conditions of any procuring region in Europe and beyond. The specifications thus represent a valuable source for any new development of ICT-supported diabetes management.

The conference is concerned with a wide array of phenomena and questions regarding the aesthetics and historical dynamics of obsolescence in North America: consumerism and commodity culture, object culture and theories of materiality and trash, architecture and urban culture, literature and the book market, technological development and media history, as well as the accelerated living conditions and short-lived e-technologies in the age of the digital. We consider obsolescence a governing principle of production and consumption that developed under modern capitalism and characterizes not only economic developments but cultural dynamics and values as well. ; lichtenberg-kolleg.org/2013/06/15/cultures-of-obsolescence-in-north-america/ ; www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9781137470898

Conservatism in the United States can seem perplexing from a European perspective. It is also under-theorized in many branches of the humanities, including literary and cultural studies. The international conference “Cultures of US-American Conservatism” will address both of these problems by bringing together scholars from the social sciences and the humanities to explore US-American conservatism from a cultural perspective. Our approach is pluralistic. We will keep in mind that the conservative movement was never homogeneous. From its origins in anticommunism, it has grown into a loose coalition that includes evangelicals interested in traditional values, independents who become active on divisive issues such as abortion and affirmative action, libertarians, neoliberals, fiscal conservatives, foreign policy hawks, nativists, and opponents of federalism and taxation. What unites these groups is an anti-establishment and individualistic orientation defined in opposition to the allegedly “liberal” media and university system. The goal of the conference is to interrogate this orientation by placing the multiplicity of conservative politics in relation to conservative lifestyles, beliefs, attitudes, discourses, markers of taste, media outlets, and social and familial roles. ; conservatismconference2017.wordpress.com

The thematic focus of our conference, “Challenges of the Post-Truth Era in American Studies,” brings to the fore the important critical work of our interdisciplinary and transnational field in times of misinformation, propaganda, filter bubbles, and a lack of media literacy. Not only the United States but also across the Atlantic have political elections and their aftermaths caused turmoil in all spheres of social, cultural, and economic life. The meanings and uses of such controversial terms as “truthiness,” “fake news,” or “post-truth” (voted as words of the year by Merriam-Webster in 2006, Macquarie Dictionary Australia in 2016, and the American Dialect Society in 2017 respectively) continue to shape current discourses in the media and on social networks around information policies, propaganda, and sensationalism that highlight the historic and contemporary circumstances of democratic processes as well as its literary and cultural representations in a diachronic manner. ; pgf2019.wordpress.com

  5. Impact of different evaluation methods on the dropout rate of objectively detected physical activity on age specific subgroups: Results from the Motorik-Modul-Study (MoMo)

Introduction: In order to determine physical activity in free-living conditions the most common used objective method is accelerometry. This study analyzed the different technical methods and their outcomes evaluating accelerometer data in the large-scale epidemiological MoMo study. MoMo marks the first nationwide objective collection of data on physical activity and sedentary behavior of German children, adolescents and young adults. Method: The accelerometer sample size in MoMo from the latest survey from 2014-2017 is n = 1.971 (4-18 years). Wearing ActiGraph accelerometers GT3X+/wGT3X-BT movement behavior was objectively registered for one week. Effects on the dropout rate were analyzed with different epoch lengths (EL), non-wear-time (NWT) definitions, different valid day/week criteria and intensity-classification-algorithms. Results: Recording is in EL of 1s with the possibility to convert into 5s, 10s, 15s, 30s and 60s for future analysis. For the NWT Calculation the Choi-Algorithm was chosen because of the constancy in detecting NWT whereas Troiano shows variance up to 3% in NWT with different EL. Valid day criteria is 8h of recordings (+13% valid data compared to 10h) on four weekdays and one further weekend day when wearing the device for 7d. Four different intensity classification algorithms (Evenson, Hängii, Romanzini, Sasaki) were validated for the different age groups (5-8, 7-11, 12-18, adults). Conclusion: Because there is no general consensus, these results will help researchers to make more suitable decisions for data processing criteria before and after data collection using the GT3X/+ accelerometer in largescale epidemiological studies. Texts, Animals, Environments. Zoopoetics and Ecopoetics probes the multiple links between ecocriticism and animal studies, assessing the relations between animals, environments and poetics. While ecocriticism usually relies on a relational approach to explore phenomena related to the environment or ecology more broadly, animal studies tends to examine individual or species-specific aspects. As a consequence, ecocriticism concentrates on ecopoetical, animal studies on zoopoetical elements and modes of representation in literature (and the arts more generally). Bringing key concepts of ecocriticism and animal studies into dialogue, the volume explores new ways of thinking about and reading texts, animals, and environments – not as separate entities but as part of the same collective.

We present first results of an ongoing research project on sentiment annotation of historical plays by German playwright G. E. Lessing (1729-1781). For a subset of speeches from six of his most famous plays, we gathered sentiment annotations by two independent annotators for each play. The annotators were nine students from a Master’s program of German Literature. Overall, we gathered annotations for 1,183 speeches. We report sentiment distributions and agreement metrics and put the results in the context of current research. A preliminary version of the annotated corpus of speeches is publicly available online and can be used for further investigations, evaluations and computational sentiment analysis approaches.

We present a case study as part of a work-in-progress project about multimodal sentiment analysis on historic German plays, taking Emilia Galotti by G. E. Lessing as our initial use case. We analyze the textual version and an audio version (audiobook). We focus on ready-to-use sentiment analysis methods: For the textual component, we implement a naive lexicon-based approach and another approach that enhances the lexicon by means of several NLP methods. For the audio analysis, we use the free version of the Vokaturi tool. We compare the results of all approaches and evaluate them against the annotations of a human expert, which serves as a gold standard. For our use case, we can show that audio and text sentiment analysis behave very differently: textual sentiment analysis tends to predict sentiment as rather negative and audio sentiment as rather positive. Compared to the gold standard, the textual sentiment analysis achieves accuracies of 56% while the accuracy for audio sentiment analysis is only 32%. We discuss possible reasons for these mediocre results and give an outlook on further steps we want to pursue in the context of multimodal sentiment analysis on historic plays.
