    Until the early 17th century almost all portable paintings were created on wood

    supports, including masterpieces by famous painters, ranging from Giotto to Dürer

    to Rembrandt. The structural conservation of these paintings requires specific

    knowledge and skills as the supports are susceptible to damage caused by unstable

    environmental conditions.

    Unfortunately, past structural interventions often caused significant damage due

    to insufficient knowledge of the behaviour of the wood panels, glue and paint

    layers. Over the last fifty years, the field has developed treatment strategies based

    on interdisciplinary collaboration and on the knowledge of specialist conservators.

    Most current conservation protocols rely on empirical knowledge of conservators

    and are not necessarily based on a scientific understanding of the nature and

    behaviour of wood and paint layers.

    In order to move the field forward, it is imperative to strengthen scientific research

    into the production methods, ageing and future behaviour of panel paintings,

    being an intricate interplay between different materials. A deeper understanding of

    the processes that adversely affect panel paintings over time will contribute to the

    improved care and conservation of these artworks.

    The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Rijksmuseum

    Amsterdam brought together a group of experts from different disciplines to

    recommend specific areas in the field that would benefit from systematic research.

    The experts concluded that targeted interdisciplinary research projects are key to

    understanding the behaviour of panel paintings and help conservators make better

    informed decisions. Research into chemical and physical properties of wood, glue

    and paint layers should be combined with an evaluation of past and current

    conservation treatments. Research should also consider the history of the object,

    studio practice, conservation history and thoughts on long-term impact of

    treatments.

Sometimes associated with a standardization leading to homogenization, often also with imperialism, English is increasingly understood to have no necessary connection with any country or group of countries. The willingness to accept that English has become Englishes might be less evident among so-called native speakers, but their authority is weaker than it seemed. This book puts examples from World Englishes into dialogue with postcolonial studies. The dialogue will correct misconceptions and misapprehensions in postcolonial studies, with World Englishes offering renewal for postcolonial studies. At the same time, the dialogue will also apply postcolonial studies' political and philosophical ideas to World Englishes, resulting in a postcolonial perspective on English today.

    It’s a platitude – which only a philosopher would dream of denying – that whereas words are connected to what they represent merely by arbitrary conventions, pictures are connected to what they represent by resemblance. The most important difference between my portrait and my name, for example, is that whereas my portrait and I are connected by my portrait’s resemblance to me, my name and I are connected merely by an arbitrary convention. The first aim of this book is to defend this platitude from the apparently compelling objections raised against it, by analysing depiction in a way which reveals how it is mediated by resemblance. It’s natural to contrast the platitude that depiction is mediated by resemblance, which emphasises the differences between depictive and descriptive representation, with an extremely close analogy between depiction and description, which emphasises the similarities between depictive and descriptive representation. Whereas the platitude emphasises that the connection between my portrait and me is natural in a way the connection between my name and me is not, the analogy emphasises the contingency of the connection between my portrait and me. Nevertheless, the second aim of this book is to defend an extremely close analogy between depiction and description. The strategy of the book is to argue that the apparently compelling objections raised against the platitude that depiction is mediated by resemblance are manifestations of more general problems, which are familiar from the philosophy of language. These problems, it argues, can be resolved by answers analogous to their counterparts in the philosophy of language, without rejecting the platitude. So the combination of the platitude that depiction is mediated by resemblance with a close analogy between depiction and description turns out to be a compelling theory of depiction, which combines the virtues of common sense with the insights of its detractors.

The three authors describe the peoples and places in the northeastern, middle and northwestern border regions of the USA and Canada. The novels address important border-oriented aspects such as indigeneity, the borderlands as historic territory and as utopian space, border crossing and transcendence, post-9/11 security issues, social interaction along the border, and gender specifics.     Die Medien repräsentieren den älteren türkischen Migranten oft als traditionalistischen »Islam-Macho«, der die Integration seiner Frau und seiner Töchter in die Gastgesellschaft bremst oder aktiv behindert. Diese weit verbreitete Stereotype beruht überwiegend auf »Bildern aus zweiter Hand«. Im Unterschied dazu rückt die Publikation von Margret Spohn die türkischen Männer der ersten Migrantengeneration explizit in den Mittelpunkt der Analysen, wo sie als »Experten ihrer eigenen Geschichte« ausführlich selbst zu Wort kommen. Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in »zwei Heimaten«. Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen.

Die Autorin analysiert diese Praktiken der Fremdsetzung, die sich von der alltäglichen Etikettierung und Stigmatisierung bis hin zu wissenschaftlichen Praktiken des »Othering« erstrecken: Rekonstruiert werden sowohl Simmels »Händler«, Parks »Mulatte«, Schütz' »Emigrant«, Meads »signifikanter/verallgemeinerter Andere« als auch ethnografische Praktiken der »Ver-Anderung« des Fremden. Dabei wird der Blick immer wieder von den vertrauten Bildern des Fremden hin zu ihren subtilen Herstellungsprozessen und Resonanzen gelenkt, was es möglich macht, von den Konstruktionen des Fremden auf die Konstruktionen des Eigenen zurückzuschließen.

    Zwar ist in den letzten Jahren der Konsens gewachsen, dass Deutschland ein Einwanderungsland ist, aber der Blick auf Migranten hat sich dadurch nicht wesentlich geändert. Auf der Basis des Paradigmas kultureller Differenz gelten sie nach wie vor als die Anderen, die Fremden. Doch die Fremdheit der Migranten als eine Prämisse der Debatte über Einwanderung in Deutschland verstellt den Blick für eine sehr vielfältige und gar nicht unbedingt fremde Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun stellen diese Prämisse in Frage. Sie untersuchen, wie in den Diskursen von Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft die kulturelle Differenz vor allem der Einwanderer aus der Türkei immer wieder festgeschrieben wird und diskutieren anhand neuer theoretischer Zugänge alternative Perspektiven.
