    Das Thema dieser Untersuchung - als Studienausgabe unverändert nach der 2. Aufl. von 1977 gedruckt - ist für die Romantikforschung ebenso von Interesse wie für kunsttheoretische Probleme der Moderne. Neben der Theorie der romantischen Ironie (von Friedrich Schlegel, Solger u.a.) werden Strukturzüge der Dichtung (von Novalis, Tieck und E.T.A. Hoffmann) aufgewiesen. In beiden Bereichen, auch in den Erscheinungsformen der Werke, zeigt sich eine Art von Reflexion als die Signalisation intellektuell-produktiver romantischer Kunst und damit als ein Prinzip von zeitübergreifender genereller Bedeutung. This study edition is an unaltered reprint of the 2nd edition of the work published in 1977. Its subject is of equal interest for research on (German) Romanticism and for problems of art theory in the modern age. Romantic irony is discussed first in terms of the theories behind it (F. Schlegel, Solger, etc.) and then in terms of structural features of literary works displaying its effects (Novalis, Tieck, E.T.A. Hoffmann). Both here and in the outward appearance of the works themselves, it is possible to discern a specific kind of reflection as the outward and visible token of the intellectually productive side of Romantic art. It is this that gives romantic irony its status as a principle of general significance over and above the period in which it made its appearance.

    Der Band konturiert die Bedeutung der 'vernünftigen Ärzte' in Halle um Stahl, Krüger, Unzer, E.A. Nicolai, Bolten u.a. für die anthropologische Wende um 1750. Gezielt wird damit auf die Anthropologie vor der Anthropologie (i.S. Platners und der spätaufklärerischen 'philosophischen Ärzte'). Im Zentrum stehen 1.) die Entstehungsbedingungen von Anthropologie und Ästhetik (Baumgarten, Meier u.a.) im Kontext von Stahlianismus, Pietismus, Thomasianismus und Wolffianismus, 2.) die Vordatierung der Ursprünge der Anthropologie im deutschsprachigen Raum von der Spät- in die Frühaufklärung, 3.) die Gleichursprünglichkeit von Anthropologie und Ästhetik auf Grund eines vergleichbaren, antikartesianischen Impulses, d.h. die Supplementierung der herkömmlichen Logik um eine 'Logik der sensitiven Erkenntnis' (d.i. Ästhetik) und ein ganzheitliches, Leib und Seele umfassendes Menschenbild (d.i. Anthropologie). Die Beiträge leisten einen Beitrag zur Erforschung jener disziplinären Bereiche der Moderne, die vom Kartesianischen Wissenschaftsdispositiv verdrängt worden und in der Wissenschaftsgeschichtsschreibung unthematisch geblieben sind. Der antikartesianische Impuls von Ästhetik und Anthropologie um 1750 macht die 'vernünftigen Ärzte' anschlußfähig an heutige Überlegungen zu Psychosomatik und ganzheitlichen Therapieansätzen und bildet die Brücke zu einer 'Logik des Individuellen'. The volume explores the significance of Halle's 'sensitive physicians' (inspired by the writings of Stahl, Krüger, Unzer, E.A. Nicolai, Bolten, and others) for the 'anthropological turn' that took place around 1750. In so doing it sets out in quest of pre-anthropological anthropology (see Platner and the late-Enlightenment 'philosophical physicians' for an analogy). Of central concern are (1) the roots of anthropology and aesthetics (Baumgarten, Meier, etc.) in the context of Stahlianism, pietism, Thomasianism, Wolffianism, (2) the predating of the origins of anthropology from late to early Enlightenment thinking, (3) the common roots of anthropology and aesthetics in a shared anti-Cartesian bid to supplement traditional logic with a 'logic of sensitive knowledge' (aesthetics) and a holistic image of the human animal encompassing body, mind, and spirit (anthropology). The articles break new ground by examining areas of modernism that have been successfully elbowed aside by Cartesian scientism and have thus been largely neglected in the historiography of science. Awareness of the anti-Cartesian currents in aesthetics and anthropology in and around 1750 also points up clear parallels between the 'sensitive physicians' and important tendencies in present-day thinking on psychosomatics and holistic therapy. It also points the way to a 'logic of the individual'.

In the Middle Ages more than in other periods, eschatology informed the way people understood humankind and the world. The papers in the present volume are devoted to the complexity and interconnectivty of the eschatological orientation of the Middle Ages. Central topics are questions of the influence and formation of eschatological themes in philosophy and the significance of ideas of the final end in medieval political thought. In addition, there is a consideration of further themes from history, theology, art and literature. The 29th volume of the Miscellanea Mediaevalia contains the papers delivered to the 32nd Cologne Medieval Studies Conference plus additional contributions. The volume includes five papers on the 50-year history of the Thomas Institute, which has been organising the Cologne Medieval Studies Conference for the last half century. Stärker als in anderen Epochen prägte im Mittelalter die Eschatologie das Verständnis vom Menschen und der Welt. Die Autoren des vorliegenden Bandes widmen sich der eschatologischen Orientierung des Mittelalters in ihrer Vielschichtigkeit und ihren Wechselwirkungen. Schwerpunkte bilden hierbei Fragen nach dem Einfluß und der Gestaltung eschatologischer Motive in der Philosophie sowie nach der Bedeutung der Vorstellungen vom Ende im politischen Denken des Mittelalters. Jahrhundert das Geistesleben Österreichs prägten. Neben Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftstellern im engeren Sinne sind auch Persönlichkeiten aus Journalismus, Wissenschaft und Kultur vertreten. Berücksichtigt werden nicht nur bekannte Personen, sondern auch viele, die in Gefahr sind in Vergessenheit zu geraten und die hier erstmals in einem Verzeichnis aufgeführt und mit biographischen Angaben vorgestellt werden. Die biographischen Einträge enthalten den Namen, Pseudonyme, abweichende Namensformen, Geburts- und Sterbedaten, bzw. -orte, die berufliche Laufbahn, eine Auswahl veröffentlichter Werke, soweit eruierbar die Namen der Eltern, eventuelle Würdigungen sowie Angaben zum Nachlass. The Handbuch österreichischer Autorinnen und Autoren jüdischer Herkunft contains approx. 8,000 short biographies of authors who have influenced intellectual life in Austria since the 18th century. Included are not only authors in the strictest sense but also personalities from journalism, science and culture, from music and film. Besides the names of well-known persons also found in other encyclopaedias, great care has been taken to include those who are in danger of being forgotten, presented here for the first time with biographical data in an encyclopaedia. The biographical entries contain the names, pseudonyms, name variations, dates and places of birth and death, as well as professional career along with a selection of published works. Main occupation, the names of the parents, if they can be traced, any awards and details of unpublished works are presented separately. The individual entries have references to appropriate source material, facilitating further research. Also included are an index of pseudonyms and name variations, an index of occupations, a list of place-names which contains the names of the places of birth and death, arranged in their respective historical regions, and a geographical index.     Anders als bei literarischen Werken liegt bei musikalischen Kompositionen das Ziel nicht in der Niederschrift eines (Noten-)Textes, also nicht in dem, was in einer Edition adäquat wiedergegeben werden kann, sondern in der klingenden Erscheinung. Der Notentext bzw. seine Edition vermittelt zwischen dem Werk und der Aufführung. Musikeditoren wenden sich daher nicht nur an Wissenschaftler, sondern vor allem auch an Musiker. Sie bilden ihr Publikum, dem sie sich verständlich machen müssen. Zu welchen Problemen das bei der Editionsarbeit führen kann und im Bewußtsein der wechselseitigen Verständigungsschwierigkeiten auch führen sollte, ist Thema des Buches. Es enthält die Referate zweier Tagungen, die die Fachgruppe Freie Forschungsinstitute der Gesellschaft für Musikforschung in Verbindung mit dem Staatlichen Institut für Musikforschung in Berlin in den Jahren 1998 und 2000 veranstaltet hat. Unlike editing work performed on literary texts, editing musical scores is not ultimately about mere accuracy in establishing a (musical) text but in determining the way that text will sound. The text (or edition) is a mediator between the work and its performance. Thus, music editors do not address only scholars but also (above all) performers. They enhance the knowledge of their audience and to that end have to make themselves adequately understood. The problems for editing that this can involve (indeed should involve, given the awareness that mutual understanding is anything but easy) is the subject of this volume. It contains the papers delivered at two conferences organized in Berlin in 1998 and 2000 by the Group of Independent Research Institutes within the Music Research Society, in collaboration with the State Institute of Musicology.

    Fragmenting modernism' is about Ford Madox Ford, a hero of the modernist literary revolution. Ford is a fascinating and fundamental figure of the time; not only because as a friend and critic of Ezra Pound and Joseph Conrad, editor of the 'English Review', and author of 'The Good Soldier', he shaped the development of literary modernism. But as the grandson of Ford Madox Brown, and son of a German music critic, he also manifested formative links with mainland European culture and the visual arts. In Ford there is the chance to explore continuity in artistic life at the turn of the century, as well as the more commonly identified pattern of crisis in the time. The argument throughout is that modernism possesses more than one face.Setting Ford in his cultural and historical context, the opening chapter debates the concept of fragmentation in modernism; later chapters discuss the notion of the personal narrative, and war writing. Ford's literary technique is studied comparatively, and plot summaries of his major books ('The Good Soldier' and 'Parade's End') are provided, as is a brief biography. 'Fragmenting Modernism' will be useful for anyone studying the literature of the early twentieth century, impressionism or modernism in general terms, as well as for those who seek to investigate in detail one of the great polymorphous figures of the time. Geschichte - darin sind sich Literaturwissenschaft und Geschichtstheorie einig - ist nichts Gegebenes, sondern bildet sich in spezifischen Denkformen und den Sprachmustern, die diese Denkformen realisieren. Einer derart erschriebenen Geschichte widmet sich dieser neue Band, indem er das breite Spektrum des literarischen Umgangs mit Geschichte von der späten Aufklärung bis zur Gegenwart untersucht und dessen geschichtstheoretische und historiographische Voraussetzungen erörtert. Einleitend stellt der Band die wichtigsten Methoden und Leitaspekte der aktuellen Debatte im Interferenzenfeld von 'Literatur' und 'Geschichte' zur Diskussion. Im Hauptteil wird dann in einer chronologisch gegliederten Reihe von Fallstudien der Zusammenhang von Geschichtsbild und Textverfahren ebenso beleuchtet wie die gesellschaftliche Funktion unterschiedlicher Formen und Gattungen der Geschichtsrepräsentation. Damit liegt ein Kompendium vor, das die seit einigen Jahren expandierende Forschung mit Blick auf deren Erträge für Literaturwissenschaft und Geschichtstheorie erstmals systematisch erschließt und damit auch als Einführung in ein außergewöhnlich vielfältiges Forschungsfeld dienen kann. Main description: History, as both literary critics and historians agree, is not a given, but forms itself in specific patterns of thought and the linguistic patterns which realize these modes of thinking. The present volume devotes itself to history as a written construct by examining the broad spectrum of literary treatments of history from the late Enlightenment to the present and discussing their theoretical and historiographic premises. The Introduction discusses the principal methods and leading aspects of the contemporary debate at the intersection of 'literature' and 'history'. The main body of the work then presents a series of chronologically arranged case studies which illuminate both the interplay of historical view and textual procedures and the social function of different forms and genres of historical representation. The volume thus provides a compendium which for the first time provides systematic access to a research field which has been rapidly expanding for several years now, and examines its benefits for both literary studies and the theory of history; as such, it also serves as an introduction to an extremely complex field of research.

    Die vorliegenden Beiträge befassen sich mit dem Problem des Biedermeier als literarhistorischer Phase. Sie stellen einerseits die Frage, ob und inwieweit diese Phase durch für sie spezifische Merkmale charakterisiert ist und ob und auf welche Weise sich innerhalb ihrer ein intraepochaler Wandel vollzieht. Sie stellen anderseits die Frage, in welchen Transformationsprozessen sich der interepochale Wandel zwischen Goethezeit und Biedermeier bzw. zwischen Biedermeier und Realismus abspielt. The articles in this volume focus on Biedermeier as an epoch in the history of literature. They inquire first whether and to what extent this period is characterized by features that are specific to it, and also whether changes are to be observed within the course of that period itself. A third central topic is the engagement with the transformation process operative in the progress from the Age of Goethe to Biedermeier on the one hand, and from Biedermeier to realism on the other.
