    This paper studies worker displacement in the United States and the Netherlands. We discuss the relevant institutions, and we analyze the incidence and consequences of displacement. In the 1993 - 1995 period, displancement rates in the US and the Netherlands are about the same, and vary similarly with tenure and gender. Also, we find some evidence that displacement hastens retirement in both countries. Finally, in both countries, post-displacement wages are higher than predisplacement wages. In the Netherlands. however, displaced workers may be more likely to move into alternative jobs directly, but, if they fail to do so, face longer re-employment durations. This renders an isolated comparison of wage discounts less informative.

    This paper examines the use of equilibrium search models in the empiricalanalysis of labor markets. We survey the literature on structural estimationof these models with micro data on wages and durations, and we discuss theadvantages of the equilibrium approach, for policy analysis and forunderstanding a number of stylized facts that are hard to explain otherwise.During the past years, substantial progress has been made in terms of theexplanatory power of these models. We finish with a critical examination ofthe extent to which the approach can be fruitfully applied to (matchedworker-)firm data.

    We combine micro and macro unemployment duration data to study the effects of the business cycle on the outflow from unemployment. We allow the cycle to affect individual exit probabilities of unemployed workers as well as the composition of the total inflow into unemployment. We estimate the model using (micro) survey data and (macro) administrative data from France. The distribution of the inflow composition is estimated along with the other parameters. The estimation method deals with differences between the micro and macro unemployment definitions. The results also show to what extent the unemployment duration distributions corresponding to the two definitions can be described by the same model.

    Youth unemployment is an issue of primary concern in WesternEuropean countries. In this paper we analyze dynamics in unemployment foryouths, adults (prime-aged individuals), and elderly. We use quarterly Frenchunemployment data, stratified by gender, age group, and duration, over theperiod 1982--1994. We find that the inflow rate of male youths is moresensitive to the business cycle than the inflow rate of adults, but that theoutflow of adults is more sensitive than the outflow of youths. Seasonaleffects affect youth unemployment mainly by fluctuations in the inflow. Theresults are used for a policy recommendation.

    In the Netherlands, the average exit rate out of welfare is dramatically low. Most welfare recipients have to comply with guidelines on job search effort that are imposed by the welfare agency. If they do not, then a sanction in the form of a temporary benefit reduction can be imposed. This article investigates the effect of such sanctions on the transition rate from welfare to work using a unique set of rich register data on welfare recipients. We find that the imposition of sanctions substantially increases the individual transition rate from welfare to work.
