    Der Begriff ,Theatron', der die Zusammenkunft von an Literatur Interessierten bezeichnet, lässt sich über den gesamten Zeitraum des byzantinischen Zeitraumes nachweisen. Angefangen bei Libanios findet man Zeugnisse in der mittelbyzantinischen Zeit und in der spätbyzantinischen Periode erlebte diese Form des Austausches, bei dem es auch um den sozialen Aufstieg und networking ging, eine letzte Blüte. Einige der 22 Studien dieses Bandes widmen sich diesem gesellschaftlichen Phänomen, während sich die übrigen mit der Untersuchung der rhetorischen Kultur in unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen Sphären befassen. Rhetorik hatte über den Unterrichtsbereich hinaus eine wichtige Funktion in der Öffentlichkeit, etwa bei Trauerreden oder bei Reden vor dem Kaiser. Aber auch im militärischen Bereich war die Feldherrenrede ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Alltags

    This selection of essays with autobiographical introduction aims to demonstrate the value of working with the original manuscripts in detail in order to gain a more profound understanding of the many facets of Early Christianity, in particular the texts and background of the New Testament. This book should persuade other scholars to once again take a look at the original manuscripts, whether it be a textual witness to the New Testament, some apocryphal text, a reference to early Christian life, or even a specific socio-historical feature of the life of the common people in the days of early Christianity. The specific selection of essays has been chosen with this purpose in mind, presenting editions of papyri and first-hand information, and showing how to base even complex constructs of ideas on a studious treatment of manuscripts. The essays demonstrate the value of studying manuscripts for lexicography, painting a picture of a socio-historical background, and showing how to assess and evaluate data methodologically.

    Main description: Der Begriff "Narrativität" tritt heute als ein Modewort in Erscheinung, das sogar Einzug ins Feuilleton gehalten hat. Im Kontext der Philosophie des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts kann der Mensch als narratives Wesen bestimmt werden. Erzählung dient hier nicht allein als Inbegriff einer Gesamtheit von Sinnbildungen, sondern vor allem zur Kennzeichnung des wirklich Menschlichen. Das narrative Selbst gibt nicht nur auf die Frage nach dem Menschen eine Antwort, sondern ist auch grundlegend für die Beantwortung der Frage nach dem Tunsollen des Menschen. Und es wird sichtbar, dass die „Form der Erzählung“ die Art und Weise des Verstehens der eigenen Handlungen und die der anderen sein kann. Die Klärung der Bedeutung von Narrativität im Spannungsfeld von Ethik und deren lebenspraktischem Bezug steht in systematischer Hinsicht allerdings noch aus. Der vorliegende Band leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Klärung dieses Defizits, indem er Grundlagen, Grundpositionen und Anwendungen einer narrativen Ethik vorstellt.
