    This book intends to examine the films of João Canijo and their ties to representations of national identity. For that purpose, we did a review of literature on Portuguese cultural identity in its diverse dimensions (historical, literary and anthropological), focusing on the importance of Salazar’s ideology and the current identity debates. In the second part of this thesis, we try to analyse eight feature films made by the director, proposing the idea of a dramaturgy of violence, through intertextuality with Greek tragedy and film melodrama, which gives a perspective of a representation of contemporary Portugal, based on a patriarchal society and its violence. We argue the importance of concepts such as non-inscription, by José Gil, or the repressed, by Eduardo Lourenço, to comprehend the films. At last, our analysis debates the issue of realism in cinema, through the prism of contemporary changes suggested by the work of the filmmaker, which fuses fictional and documentary elements. Finally, we suggest a type of dramaturgy of violence in João Canijo’s films that try to question the existing images of Portuguese identity and its cultural representations. Este livro pretende analisar a obra de João Canijo e a sua relação com as representações da identidade nacional. Para isso, socorre-se de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a identidade cultural portuguesa, em diversas dimensões (histórica, literária e antropológica), ressaltando, sobretudo, a importância da ideologia salazarista e a tensão identitária da situação atual. Na segunda parte, o livro ensaia uma análise a oito longas-metragens do realizador, propondo a ideia de uma dramaturgia da violência, através de uma intertextualidade com a tragédia grega e o melodrama cinematográfico, que pretende dar conta de um imaginário português contemporâneo, que se baseia numa sociedade patriarcal e na sua violência. Nesse sentido, argumenta-se a importância de conceitos como a não-inscrição, de José Gil, ou o recalcado, de Eduardo Lourenço, para a compreensão dos filmes. Num último momento, esta análise percorre o debate do realismo no cinema, através do prisma das mudanças contemporâneas sugeridas pela obra do cineasta, em que se destaca uma hibridez entre elementos ficcionais e documentais. Sugere-se, finalmente, uma dramaturgia da violência nos filmes de João Canijo que procura rever o imaginário existente no que diz respeito à identidade portuguesa e às suas representações culturais.

His tale" The Library of Babel "is an illustrious example of its playful ability, though not only because of the inverted world imagined in it in the past. which a library, which supposedly contains all possible combinations of all letters, words, and books, is searched by devout librarians for divinely prefabricated truths, for one also has to deal with the irony of Borges's narration, which constantly puts check the narrator's claims about the universality of the library, including the very possibility of exhausting the possible meanings through a combinatorial process. "Massa por Argamassa apresenta uma exploração profunda de um dos maiores ilusionistas da literatura, Jorge Luis Borges. Seu conto “A Biblioteca de Babel” é um exemplar ilustre de sua capacidade lúdica, embora não somente devido ao mundo invertido que nele é imaginado, no qual uma biblioteca, que supostamente contém todas as combinações possíveis de todas as letras, palavras e livros, é vasculhada por bibliotecários devotos em busca de verdades divinamente pré-fabricadas. Pois também é preciso lidar com a ironia da narração de Borges, que constantemente põe em xeque as afirmações do narrador sobre a universalidade da biblioteca, incluindo a própria possibilidade de exaurir os significados possíveis através de um processo combinatório.

     

    Borges direcionava seus leitores para sua obra de não-ficção para que descobrissem o verdadeiro autor da ideia da biblioteca universal. Mas seus ensaios supostamente históricos são notoriamente repletos de referências falsas e contradições. Seja na verdade ou na ficção, Borges nunca atinge uma conclusão estável sobre as premissas atomistas da biblioteca universal – seria possível encontrar um conjunto de caracteres capaz de expressar todo o significado possível, ou estariam essas letras, assim como suas histórias e ensaios, se multiplicando e dividindo em uma incompletude incansável?

     

    Embora muitos leitores de Borges o veem como um presságio de nossas tecnologias digitais, eles muitas vezes dão crédito demais a nossas invenções ao fazê-lo. Aqueles que elidem a necessária incompletude da Biblioteca de Babel a comparam com a Internet, assumindo que ambos seriam arquivos totais de todo o pensamento e expressão possíveis. Embora as imaginações de Borges tenham contribuído para a criatividade digital (libraryofbabel.info é certamente uma evidência disto), elas o fazem demonstrando a necessária incompletude de todos os projetos totalizadores, independentemente de seu refino tecnológico. No final, Basile guia os leitores em direção à ideia de que uma exposição fictícia/imaginária possui certo poder sobre a tecnologia."

A análise assenta nas bases de dados do ESS, do EVS e do ISSP. Os indicadores da dimensão comunidade são os mais elevados e estão acima da média; os indicadores da dimensão crença são elevados ou médios; os indicadores da dimensão prática são baixos ou médios; os indicadores da dimensão norma são médios e estão próximos da média. Na generalidade, os indicadores parecem estar a decrescer. As crenças não cristãs são baixas e parecem estar a crescer ligeiramente. O tipo praticante parece estar a baixar, mas não a favor do tipo peregrino, pelo menos de forma significativa

    Nesse artigo refletimos sobre os esforços, as dificuldades e os avanços verificados para na parceria entre a ABHR e as Edições Paulinas no que se refere à publicação de pesquisas em estudos de religião. Como se trata de analisar textos impressos e suas formas de autorização e veiculação guiamo-nos pela compreensão de Roger Chartier acerca dos livros e de seus usos. Para esse autor, as mensagens religiosas, culturais, políticas e sociais, como toda leitura, não são discursos neutros, antes, eram exteriorizações das percepções do mundo social. A ABHR, fundada em 1999, precisava de um espaço de publicação - e de uma editora - que chancelasse junto à comunidade acadêmica os textos produzidos por seus pesquisadores. Verificamos, no artigo, o processo de constituição desse espaço de publicação junto aos seus membros, apontando os avanços e problemas que cercaram tais edições.

    A partir da hagiografia de Santa Bárbara, este artigo aborda as várias versões sobre a história da santa que viveu possivelmente durante o século III, na Nicomédia. Entretanto, após a realização do Concílio Vaticano II, um decreto papal retirou Bárbara (e dezenas de outros santos) do calendário geral da Igreja Católica. A falta de comprovação histórica sobre a sua real existência foi um dos motivos para a adoção de tal medida, que ficou conhecida como o caso dos “santos cassados”. Quando isso aconteceu, o culto à mártir degolada pelo pai já era bastante difundido em várias partes do mundo, inclusive em Salvador-BA. A partir de periódicos da época, o texto analisa as repercussões do fato e as peculiaridades da devoção a Santa Bárbara na capital baiana, observando principalmente sua estreita relação com as religiões afro-brasileiras. Ao analisar o contexto histórico da eclesiologia do Concílio Vaticano II e as características da referida devoção em Salvador, o artigo aborda temas como sincretismo religioso, duplo pertencimento e devoção popular. Desta forma, o trabalho visa propiciar algumas reflexões em torno da figura de Bárbara, santa que possui muitos devotos na atualidade.

    O objetivo deste artigo é explorar, através dos conceitos da doutrina do Vale do Amanhecer, as perspectivas e visões sobre as categorias de sexualidades - com ênfase na homoafetividade - buscando apurar através da sua mística crença, os seus fundamentos para discussão do tema. Com isso, utilizamos da análise de discursos para compormos o pensamento espiritualista cristão ao qual defende a doutrina, sobre as questões que envolvem as sexualidades, e mais especificamente, as homossexualidades.     A proposta investigativa parte da abordagem geográfica e histórica de uma tradição religiosa católica que integra a Semana Santa que ocorre em Pirenópolis/GO. A perspectiva de análise busca contemplar o espaço de deslocamento do préstito, do passado ao presente, visando interpretação das espacialidades criadas pela efeméride da Procissão do Senhor Jesus dos Passos e ainda a perpetuação da festividade na cidade ao longo dos séculos. A pesquisa de campo participativa com observações, registros fotográficos e sonoros, conversas informais com os fiéis/devotos/participantes/assistentes e consultas a referências diversas são subsídios para interpretar as várias possibilidades de difusão da fé pelo espaço, observadas a partir de uma procissão.

    Este artigo aborda a inserção da prostituição brasileira nas religiões afro-brasileiras em Portugal. Analiso de que modo a imagem da pombagira serve como metáfora sexual e religiosa para explicitar a complexa trajetória dos espíritos e daqueles que os incorporam na interface entre a prostituição e o contexto religioso para explorar as tensões entre brasileiros e portugueses envolvendo as sexualidades em jogo e buscando explorar seus novos significados no contexto transnacional. Realizei trabalho de campo nos terreiros dirigidos por brasileiros, no período 2011-2013, na região da Caparica e na direção norte, que compreende as cidades entre Lisboa e Porto, e nessa ocasião pude avaliar a complexa correlação entre migração brasileira, prostituição e campo religioso afro-brasileiro em um contexto transnacional. Prostitution and Afro-Brazilian religions in Portugal: gender and postcolonial discourses: This article discusses the insertion of the Brazilian prostitution in the afro Brazilians religions in Portugal. I analyse in which way the image of the pombagira’s spirit serves as sexual and religion methaphor in order to clarify the complex path of the spirits and its mediums in the interface between prostitution and religious context, to explore the tensions between Brazilians and Portugueses and their sexualities and to understand its news meanings in transnational context. I made field work in the Candomblé’s tempels - directed by Brazilians - during the period 2011-2013 in the Caparica’s region and in the north area of the country, which comprehends the cities between Lisbon and Porto. During this occasion I could evaluate the complex correlation between Brazilian migration, prostitution and afro Brazilian religion field in a transnational context. Prostitución y religiones afrobrasileñas en Portugal: género y discursos postcoloniales: Este artíc ulo trata de la inserción de la prostitución brasileña en las religiones afrobrasileñas en Portugal. Analizo cómo la imagen de la pombagira sirve como metáfora sexual y religiosa para explicar la compleja trayectoria de los espíritus y de quienes los incorporan en la interfaz entre la prostitución y el contexto religioso, para explorar las tensiones entre brasileños y portugueses en torno a las sexualidades en juego y buscar explorar sus nuevos significados en el contexto transnacional. Realicé trabajos de campo en los terreiros dirigidos por brasileños, en el período 2011-2013, en la región de Caparica y en la dirección norte, que incluye las ciudades entre Lisboa y Oporto, y en esa ocasión pude evaluar la compleja correlación entre la migración brasileña, la prostitución y el campo religioso afrobrasileño en un contexto transnacional.

    This paper analyses two tax reform bills that are being discussed at the Brazilian National Congress, by comparing them and pointing their advantages and drawbacks. Moreover, the paper provides four empirical contributions to the debate: i) neutral rate estimates for the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) and its shares between federal entities and budget earmarks; ii) simulation of the new tax model transition rules; iii) regressivity measures of the single rate GST compared to the current model with differentiated rates, as well as cost estimates for implementing a mechanism to reimburse the tax paid by low income households; and iv) assessment of the potential impact on the revenue sharing between state and local governments.

    This text evaluates the effect of the BNDES Finame credit program on the survival of Brazilian firms, separated according to their size, between 2002 and 2016. To this end, we employ the survival analysis method. In this work, we use the microdata bases of RAIS and BNDES financing operations. The results show that BNDES Finame has increased the average lifetime of micro, small and midsize companies. On the other hand, this credit program had no effect on the survival of large companies. In addition, the smaller the company, the greater the effect this type of credit has had on its lifetime. When it is analyzed other factors that have influence on the survival of micro-sized and small firms, it is found that participating in Simples Nacional rise their survival time, while the age - the older the company is - has a positive impact on the survival time of all companies.

    Publicly provided education is both an important public expenditure and a relevant in-kind transfer, often to the poorest households. This paper compares three methods to value education services and their distributive impact. The methods are: i) The first method is cost of provision, according to which education is worth what it costs the state to provide it; ii) The second method is to value educational services using the labor market as the measure of their worth; iii) The third is to match private educational expenditures, paid for by students or their parents, with equivalent public education services, and then value the latter according to the price of the former. The results from all three approaches do not fall far from each other. The imputed income from publicly provided education reduces inequality by between 3 and 4 Gini points and increases incomes by about 6%. My conclusion is that the value of public education in Brazil is close to 6% of household income and it is quite distributive, whatever the valuation method used.

    In this paper, we discuss the methodological procedures and the computation of the value of travel time saving and the value of statistical life in road travels in Brazil. A stated preference experiment was carried out, in which we bring some innovations in order to control for hypothetical bias. The survey was conducted online through the snowball technique, requesting respondents to choose between two hypothetical routes with different levels of three attributes: toll cost, time and number of deaths. The mixed logit model was used to estimate the willingness to pay for the travel time saving and for the death risk reduction. The results show a significant difference in the values given the certainty level in the individual's answer. The model is also estimated controlled for travel and individual characteristics. Despite the important results found, the first ones in our knowledge for the Brazilian context, the data collection was biased towards medium and high income, which limits the extrapolation of its results to the country population. Given that, the most robust estimates indicate the value of travel time saving to be between 79% and 36% of the working time value, and value of a statistical life between R$ 2.4 million and R$ 3.1 million (at 2017 prices).
