    Other ; Stemmatology, or the reconstruction of the transmission history of texts, is a field that stands particularly to gain from digital methods. Many scholars already take stemmatic approaches that rely heavily on computational analysis of the collated text (e.g. Robinson and O’Hara 1996; Salemans 2000; Heikkilä 2005; Windram et al. 2008 among many others). Although there is great value in computationally assisted stemmatology, providing as it does a reproducible result and allowing access to the relevant methodological process in related fields such as evolutionary biology, computational stemmatics is not without its critics. The current state-of-the-art effectively forces scholars to choose between a preconceived judgment of the significance of textual differences (the Lachmannian or neo-Lachmannian approach, and the weighted phylogenetic approach) or to make no judgment at all (the unweighted phylogenetic approach). Some basis for judgment of the significance of variation is sorely needed for medieval text criticism in particular. By this, we mean that there is a need for a statistical empirical profile of the text-genealogical significance of the different sorts of variation in different sorts of medieval texts. The rules that apply to copies of Greek and Latin classics may not apply to copies of medieval Dutch story collections; the practices of copying authoritative texts such as the Bible will most likely have been different from the practices of copying the Lives of local saints and other commonly adapted texts. It is nevertheless imperative that we have a consistent, flexible, and analytically tractable model for capturing these phenomena of transmission. In this article, we present a computational model that captures most of the phenomena of text variation, and a method for analysis of one or more stemma hypotheses against the variation model. We apply this method to three ‘artificial traditions’ (i.e. texts copied under laboratory conditions by scholars to study the properties of text variation) and four genuine medieval traditions whose transmission history is known or deduced in varying degrees. Although our findings are necessarily limited by the small number of texts at our disposal, we demonstrate here some of the wide variety of calculations that can be made using our model. Certain of our results call sharply into question the utility of excluding ‘trivial’ variation such as orthographic and spelling changes from stemmatic analysis.

Trotzdem sollten beim Schreiben von Online-Texten einige grundsätzliche Regeln beachtet werden (1.). Wichtig ist, dass Online-Texte immer mehrere Funktionen auf einmal erfüllen (2.). Sie müssen noch übersichtlicher und noch kürzer sein, als dies in Printmedien der Fall ist. Das hat Konsequenzen für die Gestaltung von Titeln, Textteilen und Links sowie für besondere Textsorten wie E-Newsletter und E-Mails (3.). Bei Texten fürs Social Web gelten die gleichen Regeln wie bei der Online-Kommunikation; zusätzlich sollten Aspekte wie Offenheit und Transparenz beachtet werden (4.).

    Doing writing research from an applied linguistics perspective means investigating individual, collaborative, and organizational writing and text production as language-based activities in complex and dynamic real-life contexts. In doing so, micro and macro levels, product and process perspectives, as well as theoretical and practical questions are combined in transdisciplinary approaches. Appropriate methods have to be deliberately chosen and transparently explained across disciplinary boundaries. Methodological questions need to be clarified, such as: which method fits which problem – and how should and can various methods complement each other? In this chapter, we start from two methodologically complementary ways of doing research into real-life writing processes (Part 1). These approaches illustrate why collecting data represents a key problem in the history of writing research (2). We then outline a typology of state-of-the-art methods in writing research (3) and explain chal- lenges of combining perspectives and methods in research projects (4). This allows us to evaluate what sophisticated methodology in writing research can contribute to applied linguistics (5) and to conclude by sketching a related research roadmap (6). In the reference section, we focus on work combining approaches from writing research and applied linguistics in methodologically innovative ways (7).

    In this chapter, we focus on new, hybrid forms of text production and their research. We start from the practical example of Wikipedia, and the ways in which articles are developed quickly and then refined over time by Wikipedians (Part 1). This approach illustrates transitions from a narrow to a broader orientation in writing research (2). We then develop a framework for the state-of-the-art analysis of writing as a focused and incidental, by-the-way activity of producing editable and storable multimodal communication offers (3). Within this framework, challenges for and controversial issues of contemporary writing research can be identified (4). This allows us to outline what such research can contribute to Applied Linguistics (5) and to sketch a related research roadmap (6).     In this chapter, we systematize and discuss research on writing and text production as a highly interrelated mode of language use. We start from two examples of professional writing that complement each other: one is about writing in financial communication, the other about not writing in public discourse (Part 1). These examples help us illustrate the transition from a detached to an integrative view of writing in text production research (2). We then develop a framework for the integrative analysis of writing as a key mode of language use (3). Within this framework, challenges for and controversial issues of contemporary writing research are identified (4). This allows us to outline what such research can contribute to and benefit from applied linguistics (5) and to sketch a related research roadmap (6). In the reference section, we focus on work explaining the interplay of writing and other modes of language use as mental and societal processes (7).

    Der vorliegende Katalog verzeichnet eine in der Universitätsbibliothek Giessen vorhandene Sammlung von Romanen und Erzählungen des 19. Jahrhunderts, die sich aus zwei älteren Bibliotheken zusammensetzt: 1. der Leihbücherei Ottmann (3480 Bände), 2. der Bücherei des Volksbildungsvereins Butzbach (1322 Bände). Die Sammlung Ottmann, die vorwiegend Drucke der Jahre 1820 - 1870 umfasst, stammt aus einer Leihbibliothek, die der Druckereibesitzer Eduard OTTMANN Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Schlossgasse zu Giessen unterhielt. Nach Auflösung dieser Bibliothek zu Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde am 15. Januar 1913 der aus einigen tausend Bänden bestehende Rest durch die Universitätsbibliothek Giessen erworben. Kurz vor dem 2. Weltkrieg begann man, die Sammlung im systematischen Katalog zu erfassen und dem System im Magazin einzuordnen. Zum Zeitpunkt der Ausbombung der alten UB (1944) waren grosse Teile des Buchstaben A und Teile des Buchstaben B der Autoren eingegliedert. Sie gingen 1944 mit dem Hauptbestand der Bibliothek verloren. Die noch nicht ins System aufgenommene Masse der Sammlung Ottmann wurde dagegen gerettet, da sie in den Keller verlagert worden war. Dieser Bestand von ca 3.480 Bänden wird mit dem vorliegenden Katalog erschlossen. Die Sammlung wurde ergänzt durch die Übernahme von Altbeständen der Stadtbücherei Butzbach: ca 1300 Romanen der Zeit von ca 1870—1900 und von 1700 Titeln der ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Hiervon ist der Zeitraum 1870 bis 1900 in diesem Katalog nachgewiesen.

    Abstract: In her article "The politics of gender" Elaine Hobby gives a clear image of the confusion evoked in modern mentality by the juxtaposition of Renaissance literature and history. The romantic scenes portrayed in the wonderland of Renaissance poetry seem uncompromisable with the bare facts of historical record.
