    Diese Ausgabe der Ephesiaka beruht auf einer erneuten, sorgfältigen Untersuchung des schwierigen codex unicus, einer praktisch vollständigen Auswertung der seit dem Jahre 1700 von anderen Philologen vorgeschlagenen Emendationen und bietet zahlreiche Konjekturen des jetzigen Herausgebers. In der Praefatio wird die neuzeitliche Geschichte des Textes dargestellt. This edition of the Ephesiaca ist based on: 1) a new and accurate reading of the difficult codex unicus; 2) a practically full knowledge of emendations proposed by other scholars from 1700 to the present; and 3) conjectures offered by the present editor. In the preface some aspects of the early modern history of the text are clarified.

    Die unter dem Namen des Kirchenvaters Neilos von Ankyra überlieferte Schrift erzählt von einem Barbarenüberfall auf die Mönchskolonie auf dem Berg Sinai und vom abenteuerlichen Schicksal zweier dort ansässiger Mönche, eines alten Mannes und seines Sohnes. Letzterer wird vor den Augen seines Vaters von den Beduinen entführt. Diese wollen den schönen Jüngling dem Morgenstern opfern. Nach manch bestandenem Abenteuer findet der greise Vater ihn wieder - er ist wohlauf -, und die beiden empfangen vom Bischof von Eluse die Priesterweihe. Durch das vorliegende Buch wird ein literarisch reizvoller, jedoch noch wenig bekannter Text einem breiteren Fachpublikum zugänglich gemacht. The work traditionally attributed to the church father Nilus of Ancyra tells of a raid on the monastic settlement on Mount Sinai and the adventures of two monks living there, an old man and his son. The latter is abducted by Bedouins right in front of his father. They want to sacrifice the handsome youth to the morning star. After many hardships, the old father finds him alive and well, and both are ordained priests by the bishop of Eluse. With this book, a still little-known text of some literary interest is made accessible to a wider public. Die anderen zwei Oden gehören zum Anhang des Buches: Nem. 10, für den argivischen Ringkämpfer Theaios und seine Familie, und Nem. 11, auf den Prytanen Aristagoras aus Tenedos. In den Kommentaren wird sowohl über Probleme der Metrik und Textkritik als auch über den Stil, den Mythos und den historischen Hintergrund diskutiert. This work provides new editions with introduction and commentary of five odes from Pindar's Nemeans. Three celebrate victories won by Aeginetans at the Nemean games (Nemeans 4, 6, and 8). The remaining two are drawn from the appendix to the book: Nemean 10, for the Argive wrestler Theaeus and his family, including the famous myth of the Dioscuri, and Nemean 11, for the installation of a prytanis on the island of Tenedos. The commentaries elucidate problems of metre, text, and interpretation, and provide up-to-date treatment of the language and subject-matter of the poems.

    Der von Gustav Adolf Lehmann herausgegebene Band enthält eine vollständige Übersetzung und Kommentierung der Euböischen Rede des Dion von Prusa, von der allgemein nur der erste Teil, der Kurz-Roman über das Leben der Jägerfamilie in den Bergwäldern Süd-Euböas, bekannt ist. Tatsächlich umfasst die Euböische Rede jedoch in ihrem zweiten Teil ein bedeutendes soziales und ökonomisches Programm, um gerade der urbanen Stadtarmut eine menschenwürdige Arbeits- und Existenzgrundlage zu geben. Dieses Programm ist mit Dions lebenslangem Engagement als Politiker in seiner Heimatstadt Prusa, aber auch mit seiner Rolle als philosophischer Berater und Redner in Rom eng verbunden. Eine Reihe von Essays erschließt den literarischen, archäologischen, politisch-ethischen und politisch-sozialen Inhalt des Werkes und macht erstmals eine umfassende Würdigung dieser Schrift möglich. This volume contains a full translation and commentary of Dio of Prusa's Euboean Oration, of which generally only the first part, a short narrative about the life of a hunter's family in southern Euboea, is known. The second part of the speech, however, is at least of equal interest, because it presents a substantial social and economic program that is to ensure decent working conditions and a humane livelihood especially for the urban poor. This program is closely connected with Dio's lifelong engagement not only as a politician in his native city of Prusa, but also as a philosophical counsellor and orator in Rome. A number of essays illuminate the literary, archaeological, ethical and sociopolitical aspects of this work and thus make it possible (for the first time) to fully appreciate its contents.
