    Drawing on the arguments that hebel is the thesis of Ecclesiastes as well as Qoheleth’s rhetorical tool, this essay examines hebel’s connection with Qoheleth’s ambiguities and contradictions. Understanding hebel in terms of its basic meaning, that is, vapour, we argue that Qoheleth employs the image as his rhetorical strategy because of its opaque and fluctuating character. Being opaque, hebel is an ideal symbol for delineating phenomena which are ambiguous and hard to define. Coupled with its capacity for infinite change, the opacity allows hebel semantic inexhaustibility, making it a versatile device for describing the fluctuating nature of reality. As everything is opaque and in constant change, Qoheleth cannot offer advice in absolute terms and often ends up making contradictory statements.

    This article is dedicated to the symbolism of a religious site (the church) and a religious object (the cross) in Christianity in a concrete locality and community. The study was based on Victor Turner's theory of rituals and symbols. I used Turner's definitions and classifications of symbols as well as his theses related to rituals. My aim was to demonstrate that the church and the cross can be categorised as dominant symbols in Christianity, even though they bear distinct characteristics of dominant symbols. The data analysed in the present text were collected by the ethnographic interview and participant observation methods during ethnographic field research. The research was conducted in eastern Slovakia, in a village in which the majority of residents are affiliated with the Greek Catholic faith. Building on the analysis of ethnographic data, I will demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of Turner's theory of symbols. During the analysis, I will suggest possible answers, stemming mainly from cognitive anthropology, for certain questions left unanswered by Turner.

    Wer gerne literarische Texte liest, erfährt viel über soziale und/oder politische Verhältnisse der jeweils zeitgenössischen Gesellschaften, in denen die Autorinnen und Autoren leb(t)en. In manchem Fall könnte Literatur problemlos in ein sozialwissenschaftliches Studium einführende Lehrbuchtexte ersetzen. Will man allerdings die zu einem Themenfeld auffindbare literarische Vielfalt ordnen, kommen nicht nur individuelle Präferenzen bzw. Lesegewohnheiten ins Spiel, sondern es hilft auch eine gewisse Theoretisierung, die - aus der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion des Gegenstandes stammend - den Blick leitet. Für den vorliegenden Beitrag werden literarische Texte, die "Raum" behandeln, miteinander verglichen und kategorisiert. Die Rolle, die Raum in diesen Texten spielt, ist vielfältig - so wie auch die soziologische Betrachtung des gesellschaftlichen Raums inzwischen von verschiedenen, sich gegenseitig beeinflussenden Facetten ausgeht. Diese Vielschichtigkeit bezieht auch zeitliche Aspekt ein. Der Beitrag endet mit einer kommentierten Leseliste wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten zum Themenfeld "Gesellschaft und Raum" und Quellenverweisen für die verarbeiteten Literaturstellen (im Buch mit Textausschnitten einiger Werke).
