We test whether an environment of poverty affects time preferences through purely psychological channels. We measured discount rates among farmers in Uganda who made decisions about when to enjoy entertainment instead of working. To circumvent the role of economic constraints, we experimentally induced thoughts about poverty-related problems, using priming techniques. We find that thinking about poverty increases the preference to consume entertainment early and to delay work. Using monitoring tools similar to eye tracking, a novel feature for this subject pool, we show that this effect is unlikely to be driven by less careful decision-making processes.

Individuals perceive that scarce goods are more costly than non-scarce goods and the nature and status of these products explains why scant products are more desirable. Limited-edition shoes (LES) are currently trendy among the younger generations in Vietnam and can be seen as a new marketing tool for Vietnamese sneaker brands to exploit. For such a motivation, we develop a theoretical model to study the product characteristics of LES and a purchase intention relying on uniqueness, psychological reactance and commodity theories. Specifically, our study examines the power of product characteristics of LES, including scarcity, uniqueness and self-expression, on social and economic values, brand trust and purchase intention. Our work adopts a questionnaire-based survey designed to gather data from 336 participants using convenience and snowball sampling techniques. Data collection focuses on young Vietnamese consumers with ages ranging from 18 up to and including 25. Our findings reveal that all product characteristics of LES are positively related to social and economic values, except self-expression and social value relationship. Additionally, social and economic values are confirmed to be significantly related to brand trust and purchase intention, although not between brand trust and purchase intention. Finally, our study offers theoretical contributions and practical implications.

This paper focuses on whether households facing economic scarcity tend to change consumption priorities as measured by the share of spending on necessity goods relative to luxury goods in a large national supermarket chain in Israel for the years 2011-2018. Based on detailed weekly revenue data from that supermarket chain, we found that in weeks of economic scarcity (i.e., weeks without payments of social security allowances or salary), the spending on necessity goods, which are regulated products, is down by 4.8%, but the cut in spending on luxury goods is even more pronounced at 8%, and the difference between these two types of goods is up significantly by 3.2%. Within the luxury category, we observe a 10% or more decline in feast-related goods, indicating a "feast and famine" consumption strategy. Nevertheless, spending on food with label claims such as gluten-free and omega-3 eggs, is smaller (6%) than the overall spending on luxury goods in scarcity week but more than the overall spending on necessities.

We construct the first measure of collateral re-use at the bank and bond level for the European repo market using a regulatory transaction dataset. We show that banks materially increase the rate of re-use in response to tightened asset scarcity induced by the Eurosystem's asset purchase program. We find that dealers accommodate clients' demand for safe assets rather than liquidity and profit from the repo rate spread. Yet, dealers also re-use collateral to source liquidity which exposes them to collateral runs. Our results contribute to the policy debate on trade-offs between shock absorption and financial stability risks of collateral re-use.
