This article looks at four different scholarly perspectives on ‘sacred’ - the ineffable sacred, the experienced sacred, the polarized sacred and the contextualized sacred - in order to draw out their implicit presuppositions about meaning. The first two stances presuppose that meaning depends on what bits of language are about (referentialism), and the other two stances presuppose that meaning depends on relations between bits of language (holism). The article concludes three things: these prominent views of ‘sacred’ rest on usually implicit or unrecognized assumptions about the nature of meaning; some of those assumptions explain why certain theories are contentious and problematic and others ground more promising and productive approaches.

This article reflects on Agamben’s formulation of the sacred within the political order of the West, contrasting this with the Durkheim/Bellah view of the sacred/profane opposition, and then presenting two arguments that reduction of the sacred to the political is insufficient, one a form of biological reductionism that seeks to locate the sacred within the common, biological nature of human life itself, the other an abductive argument for human transformation in terms of what Sloterdjik has called ‘vertical tension.’ This argument turns out to be one for locating holiness in the very notion of life itself that I wish to ground in the idea of social cognition.

This article is an excerpt from the Master's research in Territorial Planning and Social Development at the Catholic University of Salvador, which resulted in the Dissertation entitled “The sacred and the profane in the hinterland of Bahia: religiosity in Monte SAnto”, defended by me in 2014 This work analyzes the pilgrimages to the Santa Cruz Sanctuary, the oldest in Brazil that represents the Via Crucis de Jesus, since its appearance in 1785, in the Serra do Piquaraçá in the city of Monte Santo in Bahia. It studies the local dynamics and thechange in vision of ritualization, present in Monte Santo in recent years, a fact that is promoting the weakening of the original configuration of local religiosity. Via Crucis de Monte Santo began to be built under the direct supervision of Friar Apolônio de Todi. The hill was marked by crosses that were later replaced by small chapels. Another two larger chapels were added to the sanctuary representing the Holy Passes of Christ and the Sorrows of Our Lady and a church dedicated to the Holy Cross was built on the top of the hill. In the Hinterland of the State of Bahia, popular Catholicism practices are found in several cities, villages or even in the countryside, especially Monte Santo, where pilgrimages to the Santa Cruz Sanctuary take place.

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, mountaineers faced mortal danger in vertical mountain walls, and imagined mountains as sentient, terrifyingly attractive foes. This agency formed the basis of mountain religion, in which enchanting mountains recalled notions of the sacred or holy, and mountaineering presented itself as a rite-of-passage outside disenchanted modernity. Such themes are on display in early and contemporary cinematic accounts of mountaineering. Death and fear were central elements in early mountain movies like Der heilige Berg (1926) or Der Berg ruft (1938), who used visual representations of verticality to incite bodily reactions, thus enabling audiences to experience their own commodified passage in the cinema. Recent climbing documentaries like Die drei Zinnen (2012) or Free Solo (2018) employ the same cinematographic techniques. As evidenced in these films, the cultural production of enchanting mountains relies on the agency of both mountains and cameras.

In this conversation, Silvana Rabinovich shares with Mario Orospe Hernández essential aspects of her current project of finding ways to decolonize political theology. They delve into ways of overcoming Orientalism while thinking of sovereignty, the ethical and political stakes of translation, and how it allows us to build connections among excluded communities living in a globalized world evermore traversed by borders. Finally, they discuss how fieldwork could help revitalize the tradition of political theology.
