    In this response essay, which culminates with an application of my theory of narrative empathy to the Parable of the Good Samaritan, I comment on an article by Cornelis Bennema and engage with the ideas in the framing, introductory essay by Jan Rüggemeier and Elizabeth E. Shively. In the course of carrying out these tasks, I also offer what I hope will be broadly useful comments on fictional and nonfictional contexts for character construction, on characters and characterization, and on the way diverse actual readers engage with characters. This essay concludes with some thoughts on narrative empathy, responding to the final section of Rüggemeier and Shively’s essay, which offers comprehensive overview of empathy and sympathy as aspects of emotional reading.

    Der hier neu in die Forschung eingeführte Begriff des ‚Cityscaping‘ charakterisiert den kreativen Prozess, in dem ein Stadtbild in verschiedenen Medien – Text, Film und Artefakten – erschaffen und repräsentiert wird. Er lenkt damit die Aufmerksamkeit von gebauten Stadträumen auf mentale Bilder von Städten. Im Zentrum steht einerseits die Frage, mit welchen literarischen, visuellen und akustischen Mitteln die räumliche Imagination der Rezipienten angeregt wird; andererseits wird untersucht, welche Semantik und Funktionen einem medial konstruierten Stadtbild beigelegt werden. An Beispielen antiker Texte und Kunstwerke, neuzeitlicher Literatur und Filme werden das künstlerische Potenzial und die Techniken der Semantisierung von Stadtbildern beleuchtet. Mit seinem interdisziplinären Ansatz macht der Band erstmals deutlich, wie stark die mentalen Bilder städtischer Räume in der Antike und Neuzeit von medialen Techniken geformt wurden The term ‘cityscaping’ is here introduced to characterise the creative process through which the image of the city is created and represented in various media – text, film and artefacts. It thus turns attention away from built urban spaces and onto mental images of cities. One focus is on the question of which literary, visual and acoustic means prompt their recipients’ spatial imagination; another is to inquire into the semantics and functions that are ascribed to the image of a city as constructed in various media. The examples of ancient texts and works of art, and modern literature and films, are used to elucidate the artistic potential of images of the city and the techniques by which they are semanticised. With its interdisciplinary approach, the volume for the first time makes clear how strongly mental images of urban space, both ancient and modern, have been shaped by the techniques of their representation in media

    Benjamín Prado’s novel Mala gente que camina tells the story of a high school teacher who discovers by chance the existence of an unknown author, Dolores Serma, while writing a lecture on Carmen Laforet. While Laforet was able to publish the award-winning Nada as early as 1944, Serma only published the forgotten Óxido in 1962, a coded account of events ignored by official history. This study focuses on how place and people names are used to create the illusion of referentiality required by narratives dealing with traumatic historical events, while contributing to deconstruct this same discourse by using those events to create the biography of a completely fictional character, that of Dolores Serma, who manages to insert herself into that narrative of the past and the extratextual reality of the present. Moreover, this article shows how the novel not only recovers the memory of historical events and constitutes itself as a place of memory but participates in “performative memory” (Winter 2010, 249) by transforming knowledge about history and the past in the present. ; La novela Mala gente que camina de Benjamín Prado narra la historia de un profesor de instituto que descubre por casualidad la existencia de una autora desconocida, Dolores Serma, mientras redacta una conferencia sobre Carmen Laforet. Si bien Laforet publicó la laureada Nada (1944), Serma publicó a duras penas la olvidada Óxido en 1962, un relato cifrado de acontecimientos ignorados por la historia oficial. En el presente estudio analizamos la manera como los nombres de lugar y de persona se emplean para construir la ilusión de referencialidad exigida a la narrativa sobre sucesos históricos traumáticos, a la vez que contribuyen a deconstruir este discurso al usarlos en la creación de la biografía de un personaje totalmente ficticio, el de Dolores Serma, que logra insertarse en la narración del pasado y en la realidad extratextual del presente.
