Breakthroughs and backlashes have marked progress in the development and diffusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI). These shocks make the investment in developing an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) subject to considerable uncertainty. This paper applies a real options model, extended to account for stochastic jumps, to model the consequences of these breakthroughs and backlashes characterising on investment for an AGI. The model analytics indicate that the average magnitude and frequency of stochastic jumps will determine the optimum amount of time and money to invest in pursuing an AGI and that these may be too expensive and time-consuming for most private entrepreneurs.

We analyze the role of universities or, more generally higher education institutions (HEIs), in terms of their regional and international embeddedness for regional knowledge base renewal. We assume that the introduction of radical patents in the sense of novel technological combinations contributes to the renewal of the knowledge base. For our empirical study, we combine information from patent applications, scientific publications and higher education statistics. We find that HEIs contribute most to knowledge base renewal if they have a strong research output and are locally embedded. International research embeddedness of HEIs benefits regional development only if combined with a central position in the regional network.

Public financial support for firm-level Research and Innovation (R&I) can generate important socio-economic returns. This is especially true if firms use this support to develop radical innovation, defined as new-to-market goods and services. However, radical innovation is risky, and prone to failure. Therefore, subsidising radical innovation can also generate sub-optimal socio-economic returns (i.e. policy failure). Understanding how public funding for R&I can be allocated in a way that encourages radical innovation, while avoiding policy failure, is crucial. Our paper investigates, for thefirst time, whether public fundingfor R&I generates more radical innovation in firms seeking to innovate by engaging in knowledge areas that are new to them, versus firms seeking to exploit their existing knowledge base. We make this distinction by using a novel approach, based on the knowledge challenges that firms face when innovating. By merging firm-level survey data with administrative data on public funding for R&I in Ireland, we find that subsidising firms seeking to engage in new knowledge areas, can result in more radical innovation and turnover from radical innovation, compared to firms seeking to exploit their existing knowledge base. These are critical insights from theoretical and policymaking perspectives, regarding the allocation of public funding for R&I.

In this paper the focus is on the strategy formulation processes, specifically supportive methods and structures, which address various managerial issues concerning discontinuous technologies and radical innovation in the early phase of strategic decision-making. In three in-depth case studies how companies proceeded with discontinuous technology and radical innovation ideas in strategy formulation was investigated ex-post. Based on literature and the analysis from the cases nine propositions are suggested for the design of an idealized strategy formulation process model for the simultaneous and differentiated strategic management of radical innovation and incremental innovation. The propositions are transformed into a visualized process model showing the interaction and arrangement of the latter.
