Nick Meyer grew up in a small mill town in Western Massachusetts and since his youth the town's terrain has been in flux, with houses and shops continuously erected, razed, and rebuilt in the chasm left by disintegrated industries. The Local documents a town caught between aspiration and decline, a deeply personal account which reveals the struggles, tumult, and everyday life that occur in a place which, from the outside, appears caught in stasis. The experience depicted here is of strangeness and familiarity: the rhythm of change might be recognisable but the parameters have shifted, with opioid addiction and economic crises joining the steady thrum of deindustrialization ... With the trope of 'left behind' USA now a familiar invocation, Meyer's work offers a uniquely positioned assessment of this figurative non-place, tracing its connections to the particular people and topography of an individual town. In this way, the studied depiction of stark socio-economic realities effloresces into something more mythic but no less piercing. Meyer's hometown becomes a many-layered, poetic, and often ghostly space, recalling T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land and William Carlos Williams' Patterson. As it moves between past and future, face and landscape, textural detail and vast tableau, Meyer's shifting perspectives demand a reconsideration of what 'local' is: what makes a place a place within the homogenised landscape of postindustrial capital, and what attitude or degree of proximity might disclose it

"After an unfortunate event on the streets of Boston in 1976, resulting in a head injury to an angry man while working with a 35mm camera, the American artist Mike Smith traded in his Leica for a Linhof Press 23 camera, and moved away from spontaneous street photography to a more intimate portraits. He would go on to produce a detailed record of the inhabitants of Boston's streets in an inclusive, non-judgmental, and yet direct approach. Smith worked with a large camera with an even larger flat unit, a formidable machine that got peoples attention and held it long enough for him to complete the related tasks to operate it successfully. "The driving force, above of all, was my whole-hearted embrace of the photography as a way of life. As a Vietnam veteran (where I first discovered the medium) at the age of twenty, for the first time, I believed I had a future to pursue""--Publisher's website

"Virginia Wilcox's debut monograph - consisting of photographs made in the large Los Angeles parks that are equally hardscrabble and breathtaking - is quite aptly titled Arboreal. Because they have so many irreconcilable demands placed on them by both civilization and climate, the dominant subjects of the artist's vision seem more "tree-like" or "relating to trees" than they do the actual thing. We can't help but admire their stoic resolve. The pictures, Wilcox says, "offer a winding journey through a mangled urban landscape that looks something like wilderness, towing the line between the natural and built environment." The word "arboreal" of course is also used of animals who live partly or entirely in trees, and we see here how the human animal has used and overused these spaces: alterations to the topography, infrastructural incursions, plain old trash. But Arboreal is no simple environmental diatribe. Rather, it is a clear-headed finding of complicated meaning that is necessarily as ambiguous as its subject. The singular strength of the book lies in the high-wire tension that Wilcox has created between the encroachments on the land and its sheer stubborn beauty - all juxtaposed against the sprawling city below and surrounding. Wrapping everything in that sort of light only known in Southern California, she somehow offers us photographs that are simultaneously as plainly understood as evidence and as thrillingly complex as the mind of the maker. "A suggestion of infinity," in Wilcox's words."--Publisher's website, July 20, 2021

"Fauxliage documents the proliferation of disguised cell phone towers in the American West. By attempting to conceal an unsightly yet essential technology of the modern world, our landscapes now contain a quirky mosaic of masquerading palms, evergreens, flagpoles, crosses, and cacti. Technology is modifying our environment with idiosyncratic results. The often-whimsical tower disguises belie the equipment’s covert ability to collect valuable personal data."--Publisher's description "Fauxliage documents the proliferation of disguised cell phone towers in the American West. For me, the fake foliage of the trees draws more attention than camouflage. The often-farcical tower disguises belie the equipment's covert ability to collect all the phone calls and digital information passing through them, to be bought and sold by advertisers and stored by the government. From the very start, cell towers were considered eyesores. Plastic leaves were attached in an attempt to hide the visual pollution. Over time, the disguises evolved from primitive palms and evergreens into more elaborate costumes. The towers now masquerade as flagpoles, crosses, water towers, and cacti. Today, as our demand for five bars of connectivity continues to increase, the charade still persists. I was initially drawn to the towers' whimsical appearances. The more I photographed, the more disconcerted I felt that technology was clandestinely modifying our environment. I explore how this manufactured nature is imposing a contrived aesthetic in our neighborhoods. My photographs expose the towers' idiosyncratic disguises, highlight the variety of forms, and show how ubiquitous they are in our daily lives. Their appearance is now an inescapable part of the iconic western road trip and the eight states that I visited for this project. As the fifth generation (5G) of cellular technology continues to roll out, the cell tower terrain will be changing. 5G utilizes smaller equipment that is easier to hide - think fat streetlight poles. Perhaps elaborately disguised "fauxliage" towers will start disappearing and be considered an anachronism of the early 21st century. The decorated towers could join drive-up photo kiosks, phone booths, newsstands, and drive-in movie theaters as architectural relics of the past."--Amazon.com viewed March 31, 2022

"In 1955 two photographers were awarded grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation to embark on trips across the United States. Robert Frank (1924-2019) drove coast to coast, photographing the highways, bars, and people that formed the basis for his widely admired publication The Americans (1958). Todd Webb (1905-2000) walked across the country, searching for 'vanishing Americana and what is taking its place.' Unaware of each other's work, the photographers produced strikingly similar images of the highway, parades, and dim, smoky barrooms. Yet while Frank's grainy, off-kilter style revealed many inequities of American life, Webb's carefully composed images embraced clear detail and celebrated the individual oddities of Americans and their locales." --

'Beirut, Epi-Centre Ville' recalls the aftershock of the explosion that hit Beirut in 2020. The disaster killed 218 people and injured thousands. The devastation was enormous, destroying many homes. Lebanon's government subsequently fell, causing political instability. The ensuing economic and administrative crisis is still ongoing. Although the blast gradually disappeared from the news, it continued to feel extremely close for Hans Wilschut. This book is his attempt to make tangible the paralysis that remained in the city. He has approached Beirut from all sides, portraying not the city itself but rather vantage points that show it falling apart. With an essay by Dominique Eddé in English and French--Website

"TBW Books is pleased to present Men Untitled by Carolyn Drake, a new series of photographs exploring her relationship to myths of masculinity in American culture. Following Knit Club (2012-2020), a subversive work about a community of women in rural Mississippi, Drake shifts her gaze in Men Untitled. In contrast to her previous work, her subjects are uprooted from their geographies. Erasing nearly all signs of place, Drake invites the viewer to look directly at the male bodies in front of her camera. The subjects in Men Untitled appear nude or half-dressed, frozen in awkward poses, torsos twisted and bent, backward facing, wearing furniture, and even hung upside down. But they also appear to be at ease with--possibly even acting in collusion with--the artist. Still-lives punctuate the portraits: an anatomical model of male genitalia perches on a velvet chair, a charred board of nails stands erect, and a formidable snake wraps itself around an empty window frame. Playful on its surface, the work's underlying levity is brought to the fore in Drake's epilogue, which recounts a sequence of personal experiences that motivated the work." -- Publisher's website

"A half-century of social documentary from the acclaimed American photographer, with previously unseen works. In this deeply personal book, Eugene Richards (born 1944) excavated a collection of more than 50 years of mostly unseen photographs--from his earliest pictures of sharecropper life in the Arkansas Delta to the present. In the midst of a fraught political climate--pandemic, rise in gun violence, polarized politics and the devastation in Beirut--Richards found himself meditating on what it means to make socially conscious documentary photography today. Upon his son's suggestion, he began to post his photographs on social media, sifting through dusty binders of contact sheets--photographs taken for a community newspaper, on assignment for magazines, as a volunteer for human rights organizations, when wandering alone and at home with his family--and scanning the negatives. In This Brief Life compiles these works, along with personal commentary and extensive captions by the photographer."--Artbook
