Der vorliegende Band vereinigt, unterteilt in drei Abschnitte, Einzelstudien, die sich jeweils schwerpunktmäßig auf einen dieser drei Begriffe fokussieren. Dabei werden geeignete theoretische Modelle eingeführt und so zugeschnitten, dass sie textanalytisch nutzbar gemacht werden können. Ziel ist es jeweils, wichtige literaturtheoretische Grundlagen zu entfalten und diese in ihrem Erklärungspotential für literarische Texte zu erschließen. Es kommt dabei auch zu Rückkopplungen zwischen Theoriediskurs und literarischer Praxis, insofern diese nicht selten in selbstreflexiver Form die eigenen Grundlagen thematisiert und implizite Theoriemodelle entwirft. Behandelt werden Texte aus dem Novellino, von Dante, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Diderot, Jean Paul, Foscolo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Zola, Capuana, Proust, Simon, Levi, Semprún, Perec und Modiano. Der Band richtet sich auch an Nicht-Romanisten, weshalb alle romanischsprachigen Zitate übersetzt wurden. Klappentext engl.: If one wants to understand what literature is from a longue durée perspective, it is instructive to examine the terms ‘fiction’, ‘knowledge’ and ‘memory’. Grouped into three sections, analytical studies each focusing on one of these three terms are compiled in this book. These studies introduce suitable theoretical models in this respect, which have been customised so that they can be used in textual analysis. In this way, the book aims to reveal important foundations of literary theory and analyse them in terms of their potential to explain literary texts. This also results in feedback effects between theoretical discourse and literary practice to the extent that they thematise their own foundations, often through self-reflection, and devise implicit theoretical models. The studies deal with texts from Il Novellino and by Dante, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Diderot, Jean Paul, Foscolo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Zola, Capuana, Proust, Simon, Levi, Semprún, Perec and Modiano. This book will also appeal to non-Romanists, which is why all quotations in a foreign language have been translated.

    Abstract ; Trotz der ausufernden Literatur über Walter Benjamin wurde das Konzept des Eingedenkens bislang nicht zum Gegenstand einer eingehenden Studie gemacht. Diese Lücke auszufüllen, nimmt sich die vorliegende Arbeit vor. Zunächst wird nach der Herkunft dieses ungebräuchlichen Terminus gefragt. So widmet sich das erste Kapitel einer Analyse von Ernst Blochs frühen Schriften (Geist der Utopie und Thomas Münzer), die den schillernden Begriff ›Eingedenken‹ in den philosophischen Diskurs des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts eingeführt haben. Damit bezieht sich Bloch auf einen besonderen Akt, der eine im Vergangenen liegende Potentialität aktualisiert und in verschiedenen Bereichen – Ästhetik, Erkenntnistheorie, Ontologie, Theologie – folgenschwere Wandlungen veranlassen kann. In den Schriften Walter Benjamins begegnet der Ausdruck ›Eingedenken‹ wohl ab 1927, als er anfängt, Notizen und Materialien für eine Arbeit über die Pariser Passagen zu sammeln. Zu den grundlegenden Einsichten, auf denen dieses Projekt beruht, gehört auch die Idee einer »dialektischen, kopernikanischen Wendung« der Geschichtsschreibung, die eben vom Eingedenken ermöglicht wird. Allerdings beschränkt sich Benjamin nicht darauf, Blochs Konzept in den Zusammenhang seiner eigenen Forschungen zu übertragen. Vielmehr befreit er das Eingedenken von der gnostisch-apokalyptischen »Metaphysik der Innerlichkeit«, die im Mittelpunkt der ersten Ausgabe vom Geist der Utopie stand. Im Gegensatz dazu läßt sich Benjamins Ansatz als anthropologisch-materialistisch bezeichnen. Vor allem die Surrealisten und Proust haben auf seine originelle Deutung dieses Begriffs einen maßgeblichen Einfluß ausgeübt: die ersteren mit ihrer Entdeckung der revolutionären Kräfte, die in der abgestorbenen Dingwelt liegen (s. Kap. 2), der zweite mit seiner detaillierten Erkundung der mémoire involontaire (s. Kap. 3). Im Laufe der 30er Jahre entwickelt Benjamin zugleich eine kritische Methode und eine Poetik, die um das Eingedenken kreisen, wie seine Schriften über Kraus (s. Kap. 4), Kafka (s. Kap. 6), Lesskow (s. Kap. 7) und Baudelaire (s. Kap. 8), sowie seine Kindheitserinnerungen (s. Kap. 5), die Briefsammlung Deutsche Menschen (s. Kap. 7) und die Geschichtsthesen (s. Kap. 8) ausführlich zeigen. Aus der eingehenden Lektüre dieser Schriften geht deutlich hervor, daß das Eingedenken ein facettenreiches Thema ist, das sich einer eindeutigen Definition entzieht. Deshalb schlage ich im neunten und letzten Kapitel vor, das Eingedenken als ›Idee‹ zu betrachten, indem ich auf Benjamins »Erkenntniskritische Vorrede« zum Trauerspielbuch zurückgreife. Fasst man die Ideen als Konstellationen auf, so müßte eine angemessene Darstellung der Idee des Eingedenkens die vielfältigen ›Sterne‹ ausfindig machen, aus denen diese Idee besteht. Dieser Aufgabe gerecht zu werden, hat die vorliegende Arbeit versucht. ; Abstract ; Starting with the essay on Proust published in 1929 the technical term Eingedenken plays a crucial role in Walter Benjamin’s writings. However a thorough research about this concept is still lacking in the immense literature on his thought. The principal aim of this doctoral thesis was to fill such lack by providing a vast and meticulous analysis of the meaning of Eingedenken in Benjamin’s work. The opening chapter shed light on the origins of this very peculiar and unusual German term: as a matter of fact it was Ernst Bloch, not Benjamin, who invented this concept in his first major book, Geist der Utopie (1918). By forming this bizarre noun from the phrasal verb “eingedenk sein”, Bloch tries to outline a utopian experience: an act by which the subject brings to light some potentialities hidden in a forgotten past. Benjamin not only read the first edition of Geist der Utopie, he also wrote a review of the book which is unfortunately missing. On the basis of his letters we argued that although he rejected Bloch’s gnostic metaphysics, Benjamin was deeply influenced by the idea of Eingedenken. This concept plays a central role in the method of the Passagenarbeit as well as in “On the concept of history”, Benjamin’s last text. Following the chronological development of Benjamin’s work I thus examined the different meanings the term Eingedenken assumes: the connection with the concept of Erwachen in the first drafts of the Passagenarbeit (chapter 2), Proust’s idea of “mémoire involontaire” and its translation by Benjamin with “ungewolltes Eingedenken” (chapter 3), the theory of quotation (Zitat) in the essay on Kraus (chapter 4), the specific logic of remembrance in the Berliner Kindheit (chapter 5), the idea of “Studium” in the essay on Kafka (chapter 6), the difference between recollection, memory, and Eingedenken in the essay on the Storyteller (chapter 7), and finally the salvation of the idea of Eingedenken in the essays on Baudelaire as well as in the thesis on the concept of history (chapter 8). The result of my research can be thus summarized this way: Benjamin’s Eingedenken has to be seen not as a concept with an unambiguous meaning, but as a “Denkfigur” or an “idea” in Benjamin’s sense (chapter 9).

    This response article reviews the contributions of Kirsten Marie Hartvigsen and Thomas Kraus to this special issue, and uses them as the basis for a discussion of some theoretical and methodological issues relevant to cognitive narratology and cognitive literary studies more broadly. Without offering substantial answers itself, the response poses questions concerning (i) the compatibility of different scientific frameworks used in cognitive models of characterization, particularly in the light of currently dominant ‘4ea’ models of cognition (there is a particular focus on the relationship between affective and (other) cognitive aspects of reader response, and on the role of memory); and (ii) the adaptability of cognitive models to dealing with “synthetic” and “thematic” (as opposed to “mimetic”) aspects of literary character. A brief conclusion argues for two-way traffic between the cognitive sciences and literary criticism.

    The theme of memory in the Wisdom of Solomon shows affinities with the conceptualization of memory in the ancient world generally. The book is written such that the more one has internalized the texts and traditions of the Jewish community, the more meaningful and persuasive its argument will be. To have shaped oneself according to the authoritative Scriptural texts is to perceive the true reality of how history is unfolding. Even if there is danger or suffering in the present, one can make sense of this in terms of a coming eschatological judgment because one will contextualize the present in the patterns of the remembered past. Thus, virtues like fortitude, self-control, justice, and prudence can be developed because God and Wisdom, from whom these come, have assured their eventual reward. In addition, the same pedagogical role of memory that Pseudo-Solomon describes through the plague sequence is evident in the author’s approach to his audience as well. They are expected to learn from the remembered, sacred past as well as from their own experiences. And when shaped by these memories, they will have the prudence to remain faithful because they perceive the intimate connection between virtue and immortality that has been evident throughout history. They will understand that wisdom provides eternal remembrance, both among people but even more importantly, in the mind of God.

    Loin d’une émotion romantique, liée à un sentiment d’infini ou de démesure, la quête augustinienne du sublime dans les Confessions est un désir d’harmonie qui doit réunifier l’humanité dans "l’image et la ressemblance" de son Créateur. Cette quête croise deux traits constitutifs du sublime: la transcendance, qui est, en l’occurrence, la personne du Christ, Verbe incarné et Sagesse créatrice; et l’élévation, dont les Confessions évoquent deux manifestations: celle de l’extase, dans la contemplation d’Ostie, et celle de la mémoire, entendue comme un parcours qui élève l’âme vers Dieu à travers ses vestiges conservés dans l’histoire personnelle d’Augustin. Paradoxalement, le mouvement qui accompagne cette démarche vers un état supérieur est une plongée au plus intime de soi à travers les organes de l’intériorité jusqu’au coeur, là où Dieu est encore plus intérieur que ne l’est l’homme à lui-même. Far from a romantic emotion, linked to a sense of infinity or excess, the Augustinian quest for the sublime in the Confessiones is a desire of harmony which must reunify the human nature in the image and likeness of the Creator. This quest crosses two constituent features of the sublime: the transcendence, which, in this case, is the person of Christ, incarnated Word and creative Wisdom; and elevation, of which the Confessiones evoke two manifestations: ecstasy, in the vision at Ostia, and memory, understood as a course that lifts the soul to God through its remnants preserved in Augustine’s personal history. Paradoxically, the movement that accompanies this approach to a higher state is a diving into the inner self through the organs of interiority until the heart, where God is even more interior than man to himself.

    Klappentext: Will man aus einer Perspektive der longue durée begreifen, was Literatur ist, dann ist es aufschlussreich, sich mit den Begriffen »Fiktion«, »Wissen« und »Gedächtnis« zu befassen. Der vorliegende Band vereinigt, unterteilt in drei Abschnitte, Einzelstudien, die sich jeweils schwerpunktmäßig auf einen dieser drei Begriffe fokussieren. Dabei werden geeignete theoretische Modelle eingeführt und so zugeschnitten, dass sie textanalytisch nutzbar gemacht werden können. Ziel ist es jeweils, wichtige literaturtheoretische Grundlagen zu entfalten und diese in ihrem Erklärungspotential für literarische Texte zu erschließen. Es kommt dabei auch zu Rückkopplungen zwischen Theoriediskurs und literarischer Praxis, insofern diese nicht selten in selbstreflexiver Form die eigenen Grundlagen thematisiert und implizite Theoriemodelle entwirft. Behandelt werden Texte aus dem Novellino, von Dante, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Diderot, Jean Paul, Foscolo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Zola, Capuana, Proust, Simon, Levi, Semprún, Perec und Modiano. Der Band richtet sich auch an Nicht-Romanisten, weshalb alle romanischsprachigen Zitate übersetzt wurden. Klappentext engl.: If one wants to understand what literature is from a longue durée perspective, it is instructive to examine the terms ‘fiction’, ‘knowledge’ and ‘memory’. Grouped into three sections, analytical studies each focusing on one of these three terms are compiled in this book. These studies introduce suitable theoretical models in this respect, which have been customised so that they can be used in textual analysis. In this way, the book aims to reveal important foundations of literary theory and analyse them in terms of their potential to explain literary texts. This also results in feedback effects between theoretical discourse and literary practice to the extent that they thematise their own foundations, often through self-reflection, and devise implicit theoretical models. Dass in einem Transformationsprozess von einer autoritären Staatsstruktur hin zu einer demokratischen Gesellschaftsform neben der juridischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit auch die Erinnerung an erlebtes Unrecht eine zentrale Rolle spielt, hat sich in der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts zweimal deutlich gezeigt. Im Unterschied zur wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Unrechtserfahrung unter zwei sehr unterschiedlichen autoritären Regimen ist die kritische Untersuchung der Erinnerung an Unrecht im arabischen Raum erst im Entstehen begriffen. Trotz dieses Unterschiedes ist eine Engführung deutscher und arabischer Perspektiven auf diese Thematik, wie sie der vorliegende Band unternimmt, gewinnbringend und spannend für beide Perspektiven und betritt zugleich wissenschaftliches Neuland. Der Band präsentiert Ergebnisse einer dreijährigen interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit deutscher und nordafrikanischer Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler. Die Beiträge widmen sich unterschiedlichen Formen des Erinnerns und reflektieren die Chancen und Herausforderungen einer Erinnerung an Unrecht aus philosophischer, theologischer, gesellschaftstheoretischer, sprach-, kultur- und literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive.     Abstract This article provides a genealogy of the architectural figuration of human cognition from the ancient world to Renaissance Europe and, finally, to the American Renaissance where it came to possess a striking cultural and literary potency. The first section pursues the two-fold task of elucidating this archetypal trope for consciousness, both its ancient moorings and its eventual transmission into Europe. The second section shows that three of the most prominent writers of the American Renaissance—Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Nathaniel Hawthorne—engaged this mystically inspired architectonic symbolism, employing far older techno-cultural suppositions about interior space. I thereby offer an account of the intellectual and spiritual heritage upon which Romantic writers in the United States drew to articulate cognitive interiority. These Romantics did more than value creativity in contradistinction to Enlightenment rationalism; they were acknowledging themselves as recipients of the ancient belief in cosmogenesis as self-transformation.

    Research has shown that minimally counterintuitive concepts (MCI) are more memorable than concepts that are simply bizarre. However, this disparity may exist only in studies using cross-cultural samples. To test the impact of bizarreness on culturally homogeneous populations, we read a fictional narrative to 33 college-age students at a Midwestern university. This narrative featured 18 sets of target items - six which were intuitive, six which were counterintuitive, and six which were bizarre. After hearing the story, experimenters administered a written recall task. As hypothesized, students did not differ in their recall of counterintuitive or bizarre target items. Therefore, we propose a minimally distinctive model of memorability, encompassing both counterintuitiveness and bizarreness. This model may help us better understand the memorability of expectation violations, especially those within religious stories.

    The Gospel of Thomas (GThom) is a collection of sayings, most of which come with the stereotypical introduction ‘Jesus said: …’ The GThom thus looks like a loose collection of disparate material. However, several sayings in the collection are introduced by ‘He said: …’, thus omitting explicit reference to Jesus as the speaker. This points to greater (narrative) coherence: when the speaker's name is missing in a logion, the logion depends on the surrounding context and ceases to be a self-contained unit. This article views the GThom as a sayings collection on the way to becoming a literary composition titled ‘The Gospel according to Thomas’., German abstractDas Thomasevangelium (EvThom) ist eine Sammlung von Jesusworten (Logien). Die meisten davon werden stereotyp eingeleitet mit ‚Jesus sagte: …‘ Dadurch erscheint das Thomasevangelium wie eine lockere Sammlung. Bei einigen Logien lautet die Einleitung aber nur ‚Er sagte: …‘; Jesus wird nicht ausdrücklich als Sprecher genannt. Somit sind diese Logien keine in sich geschlossenen Einheiten mehr; sie sind auf den umgebenden Kontext angewiesen, um die Identität des Sprechers zu klären. Die Sammlung weist an diesen Stelle größere narrative Kohärenz auf.     An extensive literature shows that reminders can successfully change behavior. Yet, there exists substantial unexplained heterogeneity in their effectiveness, both: (i) across studies, and (ii) across individuals within a particular study. This paper investigates when and why re-minders work. We develop a theoretical model that highlights three key mechanisms through which reminders may operate. To test the predictions of the model, we run a nationwide field experiment on medical adherence with over 4000 pregnant women in South Africa and document several key results. First, we find an extremely strong baseline demand for reminders. This demand increases after exposure to reminders, suggesting that individuals learn how valuable they are for freeing up memory resources. Second, stated adherence is increased by pure reminders and reminders containing a moral suasion component, but interestingly, reminders containing health information reduce adherence in our setting. Using a structural model, we show that heterogeneity in memory costs (or, equivalently, annoyance costs) is crucial for explaining the observed behavior.

    For most decisions, we rely on information encountered over the course of days, months or years. We consume this information in various forms, including abstract summaries of multiple data points - statistics - and contextualized anecdotes about individual instances - stories. This paper proposes that we do not always have access to the full wealth of our accumulated information, and that the information type - story versus statistic - is a central determinant of selective memory. In controlled experiments we show that the effect of information on beliefs decays rapidly and exhibits a pronounced story-statistic gap: the average impact of stories on beliefs fades by 33% over the course of a day, but by 73% for statistics. Consistent with a model of similarity and interference in memory, prompting contextual associations with statistics improves recall. A series of mechanism experiments highlights that the lower similarity of stories to interfering information is the key driving force behind the story-statistic gap.

    This paper begins with a brief definition of allusion. The majority of the paper investigates the ways that memory language was used by ancient authors (Jewish, Greek, and Latin) as a literary technique to signal overt intertextual and intratextual allusions. I argue that this is a recognized, intentional, and cross-cultural phenomenon with varied practices and that scholars need to consider this in future studies of intertextuality.

    This book sprang from three handwritten lines by Ivan Bunin, Russia's first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Found inside a first edition of Mitya's Love, they led to the discovery of one of the largest corpora of letters written to Ivan and Vera Bunin by two people whose lives and legacy had been, until now, forgotten. These letters are now in the Russian Archive in Leeds (RAL), and are published here for the first time. The book also focuses on memory and history in its purest form, as narrated by witnesses who lived through the most tragic century in Russian history. Their stories involve Grand Dukes, Russian literary and political giants, as well as one of the architects of the Gulag, and show how these lives intertwined. Traveling from antiquity to the present, Flowers of Time reveals how postapocalyptic fiction differs from other genres—pastoral poetry, science fiction, and the maroon narrative—that also explore human capabilities beyond the constraints of civilization. Mark Payne places postapocalyptic fiction into conversation with such theorists as Aristotle, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Carl Schmitt, illustrating how the genre functions as political theory in fictional form.Payne shows that rather than argue for a particular way of life, postapocalyptic literature reveals what it would be like to inhabit that life. He considers the genre’s appeal in our own historical moment, contending that this fiction is the pastoral of our time. Whereas the pastoralist and the maroon could escape to real-world hills and fashion their own versions of freedom, on a fully owned and occupied Earth, only an apocalyptic event can create a space where such freedoms are feasible once again.Flowers of Time looks at how fictional narratives set after the world’s devastation represent new conditions and possibilities for life and humanity

The author as producer, the contingency of the text, intertextuality, the "device"—core ideas of modern literary theory—were all pioneered in the shadow of oral literature. Authorless, loosely dated, and variable, oral texts have always posed a challenge to critical interpretation. When it began to be thought that culturally significant texts—starting with Homer and the Bible—had emerged from an oral tradition, assumptions on how to read these texts were greatly perturbed. Through readings that range from ancient Greece, Rome, and China to the Cold War imaginary, The Ethnography of Rhythm situates the study of oral traditions in the contentious space of nineteenth- and twentieth-century thinking about language, mind, and culture. It also demonstrates the role of technologies in framing this category of poetic creation. By making possible a new understanding of Maussian "techniques of the body" as belonging to the domain of Derridean "arche-writing," Haun Saussy shows how oral tradition is a means of inscription in its own right, rather than an antecedent made obsolete by the written word or other media and data-storage devices

    Demenz fordert die gegenwärtige Gesellschaft heraus. Dies stellt nicht nur die Medizin vor Herausforderungen. Es stellen sich auch wichtige Fragen zum Umgang mit erkrankten Menschen und ihrem sozialen Umfeld. Daran zeigt sich, dass Demenz ein reflexionsbedürftiger Gegenstand mit vielen Facetten ist. Die deutschsprachige Gegenwartsliteratur reagiert ab der zweiten Hälfte der 1990er Jahre mit Kontinuität auf den Diskurs über Demenz. Dabei adaptiert sie nicht bloß zirkulierendes Wissen über den Gegenstand ‚Demenz‘, sondern gestaltet ihn im Rahmen ästhetischer Konzeptionen mit. Auf Basis der Diskurstheorie von Michel Foucault und der Wissenspoetologie von Joseph Vogl untersucht die Arbeit die vielschichtigen Darstellungsweisen von Demenz innerhalb von Literatur. Dabei identifiziert sie ein breites Spektrum, das von Normierungsbestrebungen bis zu offen konzipierten Textkonstruktionen reicht.
