The “vanitas motif” –a defining feature of European art, cultural, literary, and philosophical history –finds its origin in the Old Testament, especially in the Book of Qoheleth. Jerome understood, similar to the underlying Hebrew הבל, also the renderingof vanitasas a metaphorical-dynamic conceptuality. Via the Greek Septuagint tradition, a con-crete-static understanding of this motif was established, which resulted into a one-sided and exceedingly negative-pessimistic world view regarding the reception history of the associated current of thought –this pattern continues to the present day. This, however, does not do justice to neither the Hebrew nor the Latin foundation Das "Vanitas-Motiv", ein prägendes Merkmal der europäischen Kunst-, Kultur-, Literatur- und Philosophiegeschichte, hat seinen Ursprung im Alten Testament, vor allem im Koheletbuch. Wie das zugrundeliegende hebräische hæbæl verstand Hieronymus auch seine Wiedergabe mit vanitas als metaphorisch-dynamische Begrifflichkeit. Über die griechische Septuagintatradition ist es zu einem konkret-statischen Verständnis dieses Motivs gekommen, das zu einer einseitigen und äußerst negativ-pessimistischen Weltsicht in der Rezeptionsgeschichte der damit verbundenen Geistesströmung geführt hat - über weite Strecken bis zum heutigen Tag. Damit wird man weder der hebräischen noch der lateinischen Grundlegung gerecht.
