    Abstract: Object: study of the ways of reflection the situations of the mental sphere on the level of propositions by native German speakers Methods: descriptive, comparative, the method of linguistic observation, modeling and interpretation of the substantive structure of a sentence. Results: Established the dependence of the propositional representations character on the specificity of the ontology of situations, the specificity of the sphere of life where the event takes place: the ontological characteristics of the object that is considered in terms of semantics. Practical implications: The results may be used for university courses of the German theoretical grammar and stylistics, the general linguistics, theory and practice of translation, the cognitive linguistics and grammar

    This article addresses the contributions by Michael Whitenton, and Bonnie Howe and Eve Sweetser, in the present volume. I endorse all three contributors’ use of cognitive-linguistic approaches, highlighting their helpfulness for the reconstruction of frames that shape the reading experience of audiences located in different historical and cultural contexts. The two chapters meticulously trace the complexity and dynamics of understanding exemplary biblical characters. I emphasise that the level of attention to linguistic detail displayed by cognitive stylistics is a desideratum for a reader-oriented analysis of a text’s potential reading effects. At the same time, I question some assumptions in cognitive linguistics concerning the cognitive-emotional processes real readers are actually likely to perform. The two chapters serve as a starting point for me to discuss general tendencies in recent cognitive and empirical literary studies, which have perhaps overstated the intensity and impact of some processes, while overlooking others that may be just as important.

    The rhetorical movement throughout Lamentations 3 is difficult to describe and scholars disagree on how to characterize the acrostic poem. Much hinges on how we interpret the sequence of qatal verbs throughout 3.56-61. Most scholars understand this section as a Danklied, and so translate the qatal forms in the past tense. Another option is to understand the qatal verbs as precatives, expressing a wish or command. However, this is a contested form in the linguistic study of classical Hebrew. Many Lamentations scholars cite this uncertainty in arguments against a precative reading of Lam. 3.56-61. This article builds a fresh case for understanding the precative qatal as rhetorically and linguistically plausible. After working through the rhetorical arguments that support this reading, special attention is given to a recent argument in favor of the precative hypothesis from linguist Alexander Andrason. Brief comments are also offered on the oral-performative dimension of this interpretation.

    This article provides an overview of metaphor theories and research on their own terms, as well as their use in Hebrew Bible (HB) studies. Though metaphor studies in the HB have become increasingly popular, they often draw upon a limited or dated subset of metaphor scholarship. The first half of this article surveys a wide variety of metaphor scholarship from the humanities (philosophical, poetic, rhetorical) and the sciences (e.g., conceptual metaphor theory), beginning with Aristotle but focusing on more recent developments. The second half overviews studies of metaphor in the HB since 1980, surveying works focused on theory and method; works focused on specific biblical books or metaphor domains; and finally noting current trends and suggesting areas for future research.

    In the wake of Milman Parry's and Alfred Lord's groundbreaking discovery of oral composition in Homeric epics, biblical scholars analyzed the formulaic language of the biblical Psalms with a view toward establishing a similar compositional function. This approach met with little success. Among the many recent refinements to the Oral-Formulaic theory is the distinction between oral composition and oral conception, a distinction which allows for identifying oral features of a "text" which do not necessarily reflect composition in performance. The goal of this article is two-fold. First this article proposes a new model for identifying oral formulas based on the theory of prototypical categorization developed within the field of cognitive sciences, particularly cognitive linguistics. Second, this article argues that the psalmic oral formulas are best understood as linguistic registers which evoke a performance arena, a feature of orally derived literature described most extensively by John Miles Foley.

    The general theoretical issues of set phrases have yet to be studied at the level of the requirements of modern linguistics, the position of such language units has not been clearly defined, and their boundaries with other phrases remain uncertain. Issues such as the nature of set phrases, their formation, types, and attitude to other linguistic units, especially words and sentences, features of development, still need to be addressed in linguistics. The article's author explains that set phrases from the point of view of the language are the most exciting units that express the spirit of the people. The main features of stable combinations are their nominative and communicative functions. The author also discusses the differences between set phrases and complimentary combinations of words. Particular attention is paid to connecting complex term combinations to stable combinations. ; Общетеоретические вопросы устойчивых словосочетаний до слабо изучены на уровне требований современной лингвистики, нечетко определено положение таких языковых единиц, а их границы с другими словосочетаниями остаются неопределенным. Такие вопросы, как природа устойчивых словосочетаний, способы их образования, виды, отношение к другим языковым единицам, особенно к словам и предложениям, особенности развития, в языкознании до сих пор остаются дискуссионными. В статье дается объяснение, что устойчивые словосочетания с точки зрения языка являются наиболее интересными единицами, которые выражают дух народа. Основными чертами устойчивых сочетаний являются их номинационная и коммуникативная функции. Проанализированы отличия между устойчивыми словосочетаниями и свободными сочетаниями слов. Особое внимание уделяется принадлежности сложных терминосочетаний к устойчивым сочетаниям.

    The article deals with the terminological status of "curse" as a linguistic unit. The author analyses this word's lexical and semantic significance in dictionaries and scientific sources. In the study, empirical, comparative and typological-comparative linguistics methods were used. Curses, as statements, have a solid illocutionary effect in the speech act, which is the focus of the study. The study results are of interest to researchers of speech influence and manipulation, as well as to those who conduct cognitive research in the field of linguistics. ; У статті розглядається термінологічний статус «прокляття» як лексичної одиниці. Автор аналізує лексичну та семантичну значущість цього слова у словниках та наукових джерелах. У ході дослідження були використані емпіричний, порівняльний та типологічно-порівняльний методи лінгвістики. Прокляття, як висловлювання, мають сильний іллокутивний вплив у мовному акті, на що й зроблений акцент у дослідженні. Результати дослідження становлять інтерес дослідникам мовленевого впливу та маніпуляції, а також тим, хто проводить когнітивні дослідження у галузі лінгвістики.
