"This groundbreaking text provides practical, contextualized methods for teaching and discussing topics that are considered "taboo" in the classroom in ways that support students' lived experiences. In times when teachers are scapegoated for adopting culturally sustaining teaching practices and are pressured to "whitewash" the curriculum, it becomes more challenging to create an environment where students and teachers can have conversations about complex, uncomfortable topics in the classroom. With contributions from scholars and K-12 teachers who have used young adult literature to engage with their students, chapters confront this issue and focus on themes such as multilingualism, culturally responsive teaching, dis/ability, racism, linguicism, and gender identity. Using approaches grounded in socioemotional learning, trauma-informed practices, and historical and racial literacy, this text explores the ways in which books with complicated themes can interact positively with students' own lives and perspectives. Ideal for courses on ELA and literature instruction, this book provides a fresh set of perspectives and methods on approaching and engaging with difficult topics. As young adult literature that addresses difficult subjects is more liable to be considered "controversial" to teach, teachers will benefit from the additional guidance this volume provides, so that they can effectively reach the very students these themes address"-- Foreword / Stergios Botzakis -- Introduction / Rachelle Savitz, Leslie Roberts, and Jason DeHart -- Un maravilloso, dual-language read aloud : making families visible through testimony in the primary classroom / Jean Carlos Garcia Reyes, Beth Buchholz -- What makes you unique? : valuing classroom diversity within writing instruction / Kate Bentley, Amy Broemmel, M. Chris Douglass -- Sliding the glass door : making time and space for difficult conversations with youth through multivoiced young adult literature / Keith Newvine, Tina Middaugh, Heather Waymouth, Pamela Margolis, Sarah Fleming, Sarah Mellon -- Exploring gender identity and equity through Lily and Dunkin / Jennifer Dail, Julie Koch, Shelbie Witte, Lauren Vandever -- Remixing for relevance : talking gentrification in pride / Brooke Bianchi Pennington, Arianna Banack -- Layering discourse : encouraging diverse perspectives in a high school literature class / Lauren Popov, Renee Stites Kruep -- Curating the socially just classroom library in the middle / Kristie W. "Emotion in Texts for Children and Young Adults: Moving stories takes up key issues in affect studies while putting forward new approaches and ways of thinking about the intricate entanglements of emotion, affect, and story in relation to the functions, processes, and influences of texts designed for youth. With an emphasis on national literatures and international scholarship, it examines a variety of storytelling forms, formats, genres, and media crafted for readers ranging from the very young to the newly adult. Layering recent cognitive approaches to emotion, affect studies, and feminist perspectives on emotion, it investigates not only what texts for children and young adults have to say about emotion but also how such texts try to move their readers. In this, the essays draw attention to the ways narrative literary texts address, elicit, shape, and/or embody emotion"--

"In our polarized environment, the censorship and outright banning of children's books that some people deem to be controversial or objectionable remains a major concern for schools, libraries, and communities across the United States. Intellectual freedom champion, the American Library Association, created Teaching Banned Books to Kids, a guide that includes both contemporary books that have been banned and classic literature that continues to be under attack for political and/or religious reasons. Parents, school and public librarians, library and information sciences students, and classroom educators will find the assistance and support they need to defend these challenged books with an informed response while ensuring access to young book lovers"--

"The collective trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital shaming. Violence against women. Sexual bullying. Racial slurs and injustice. These are just some of the issues faced by young adults and confronted in Liberating Shakespeare. Exploring how adaptations of Shakespeare's plays can be used to empower young audiences by addressing issues of oppression, trauma and resistance, this collection showcases a wide variety of approaches to understanding, adapting and teaching Shakespeare. In the past 25 years, the number of Shakespeare adaptations targeting adolescent audiences has grown significantly. This book explores YA novels based on Shakespeare's plays, teen films such as 10 Things I Hate about You and Romeo + Juliet, video games such as Elsinore and the Life is Strange series, and many other adaptations that have invited young audiences to see themselves in Shakespeare's characters. It also looks at more recent digital adaptations, produced by and for young people, which reimagine Shakespeare's plays as first-person video diaries. These creative works use Shakespeare to address some of the most pressing questions in contemporary culture - exploring themes of violence, race relations and intersectionality. The chapters in this collection consider whether the representations of characters and situations in YA Shakespeare can function as empowering models for students and how these works might be used as companion texts within educational settings. It argues that YA Shakespeare represents the diverse concerns of today's youth and should be taken seriously as art that speaks to the complexities of a broken world and offers moments of hope for an uncertain future"--

"The follow-up to Guriel's NYT New & Noteworthy Forgotten Work is a mashup of Moby-Dick, The Lord of the Rings, Byron, cyberpunk, Swamp Thing, Teen Wolf ... and more. It's 2070. Newfoundland has vanished, Tokyo is a new Venice, and many people have retreated to "bonsai housing": hives that compress matter in a world that's losing ground to rising tides. Enter Kaye, an English literature student searching for the reclusive author of a YA classic--a beloved novel about teenage werewolves sailing to a fabled sea monster's nest. Kaye's quest will intersect with obsessive fan subcultures, corporate conspiracies, flying gondolas, an anthropomorphic stove, and the molecular limits of reality itself. Set in the same world as Jason Guriel's critically acclaimed verse novel Forgotten Work, which the New York Times called "unlikely, audacious, and ingenious," and written in virtuosic rhyming couplets, The Full-Moon Whaling Chronicles cuts between Kaye's quest, chapters from the YA novel, and guerilla works of fanfic in a genetically modified monsterpiece: a visionary verse novel destined to draw its own cult-following."--

Young adult literature is often referred to as the originating source for film adaptations that turn into large transmedia storyworlds and franchises. This is, however, only one of the transmedia interactions involving young adult literature in modern culture. This Element unfolds these relations focusing on transmedia practices that bridge the dominant public discursive split between print based and digital media. Today print and digital products work together as well as independently in interconnected networks and these practices puncture ideas of a media hierarchy. Specifically, it is demonstrated how literature for young people take part in transmedia storytelling on a macro level but also in so-called cluster works that work as transmedia storytelling on a micro level.

"This collection focuses on the specific issue of controversy as a cross-sectional aspect of contemporary children's and YA literature, in a spectrum stretching from national experiences, to explore the impact of specific historical, economic and social environments on the rise of controversies; to inter-national exchanges in which controversies are generated specifically by the interactions between cultures; to international contexts that deal with controversies relevant on a global scale. By adopting controversy as an adjustable lens for a joined consideration of literary themes, narrative or aesthetic solutions, translation choices, publishing and marketing decisions, and discursive practices, the volume establishes a diversified collection of chapters that offers new insight into functions of children's and YA literature in contemporary culture"--

As young adult literature that addresses difficult subjects is more liable to be considered "controversial" to teach, teachers will benefit from the additional guidance this volume provides, so that they can effectively reach the very students these themes address"--...

"Even though we instruct our children not to lie, the truth is that lying is a fundamental part of children's development-socially, cognitively, emotionally, morally. Lying can sometimes be more compassionate than telling the truth, even more ethical. Reading specific children's books can instruct child readers how to be guided by an etiquette of lying, to know when to tell the truth and when to lie. Equally important, these stories can help prevent them from being prey to those liars who are intent on taking advantage of them. Becoming a critical reader requires that one learn how to lie judiciously as well as to see through others' lies. When humans first began to speak, we began to lie. When we began to lie, we started telling stories. This is the paradox, that in order to tell truthful stories, we must be good liars. Novels about child artists showcase how a protagonist embraces this paradox, accepting the stigma that a writer is a liar who tells the truth. Emily Dickinson's phrase "telling it slant" best expresses the vision of how writers for children and young adults negotiate the conundrum of both protecting child readers and teaching them to protect themselves. This volume explores the pervasiveness of lying as well as the necessity for lying in our society; the origins of lying as connected to language acquisition; the realization that storytelling is both lying and truthtelling; and the negotiations child-artists must process in order to grasp the paradox that to become storytellers they must become expert liars and lie detectors"--
