    Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg findet in der deutschsprachigen Literatur und Literaturwissenschaft eine verstärkte Reflexion auf den Dreißigjährigen Krieg statt, die bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs fortgesetzt wird und sich in den späten 1940er Jahren nochmals intensiviert. Die historischen Zäsuren der beiden Kriege werden parallel gesetzt und die Literatur des Barockzeitalters zur Selbstdeutung wiederentdeckt. Neben heute kanonischen Autoren sind an diesen Rezeptionsprozessen auch seinerzeit viel gelesene, heute aber weitgehend vergessene beteiligt. Damit agiert die Literatur und Literaturwissenschaft des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts etwas aus, das Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts als historiographisches Konzept des ‚Zweiten Dreißigjährigen Krieges‘ (Hans-Ulrich Wehler) bzw. der ‚Weltkriegsepoche‘ (Arno J. Mayer) wiederbegegnet. Mit Beiträgen von Achim Aurnhammer, Victoria Gutsche, Klaus Haberkamm, Wilhelm Kühlmann, Fabian Lampart, Dieter Martin, Christopher Meid, Christian Meierhofer, Philipp Redl, Christoph Schmitt-Maaß, Stefanie Stockhorst, Mario Zanucchi After the First World War the Thirty Years’ War was increasingly reflected by contemporary German literature and criticism. Much influenced by two World Wars the historical analogies become evident, and the literature of the Baroque age is rediscovered for self-interpretation. Next to canonised classics once famous writers, who are now mostly forgotten, were involved. In retrospect, they are particularly significant for understanding the broader reception. Literature and criticism of the early 20th century are framing a key concept that, at the very end of the century, returns as the concept of a ‘Second Thirty Years’ War’ (Hans-Ulrich Wehler) or an ‘era of World War’ (Arno J. Mayer).     This paper examines the impact of male casualties due to World War II on fertility and female employment in the United States. We rely on the number of casualties at the county-level and use a difference-in-differences strategy. While most counties in the U.S. experienced a Baby Boom following the war, we find that the increase in fertility was lower in high-casualty rate counties than in low-casualty rate counties. Analyzing the channels through which male casualties could have decreased fertility, we provide evidence that county male casualties are positively related to 1950s female employment and household income.

    In American visual culture, the 1930s and 1940s were a key transitional period shaped by the era of modernism and the global confrontation of World War II. Christof Decker demonstrates that the war and its iconography of destruction challenged visual artists to find new ways of representing its consequences. Dealing with trauma and war crimes led to the emergence of complex aesthetic forms and media crossovers. Decker shows that the 1940s were a pivotal period for the creation of horrific yet also innovative representations that boosted American visual modernism and set the stage for debates about the ethics of visual culture in the post-9/11 era

    This paper exploits the idiosyncratic line of contact separating Allied and Soviet troops within East Germany at the end of WWII to study political resistance in a non-democracy. When Nazi Germany surrendered, 40% of what would become the authoritarian German Democratic Republic was initially under Allied control but was ceded to Soviet control less than two months later. Brief Allied exposure increased protests during the major 1953 uprising. We use novel data on the appointment of local mayors and a retrospective survey to argue that even a "glimpse of freedom" can foster civilian opposition to dictatorship.

    This paper exploits the idiosyncratic line of contact separating Allied and Soviet troops within East Germany at the end of WWII to study political resistance in a non-democracy. When Nazi Germany surrendered, 40% of what would become the authoritarian German Democratic Republic was initially under Allied control but was ceded to Soviet control less than two months later. Brief Allied exposure increased protests during the major 1953 uprising. We use novel data on the appointment of local mayors and a retrospective survey to argue that even a "glimpse of freedom" can foster civilian opposition to dictatorship.

    Does repression of opposition elites prevent resistance against foreign-imposed regimes? On the one hand, elimination of elites can undermine the opposition's capacity for antiregime resistance. Yet killing opposition elites deprives the new regime of useful human capital. Co-optation of elites becomes a tempting alternative. We examine this trade-off by studying the effects of elimination vis-à-vis survival of Polish elites during World War II. Our focus is on the Polish nobility, intellectuals, and (reserve) army officers. We exploit plausibly random variation in the officers' wartime deployment and subsequent imprisonment. While most officers in Nazi captivity survived, almost all those in Soviet captivity were murdered. We find that municipalities with more surviving elites saw fewer protests against the postwar Soviet-backed regime during the Solidarność-led uprising in the 1980s. Historical evidence suggests that surviving elites positively influenced local-level economic development, thereby reducing economic hardship and grievances against the regime.

    During World War II, the U.S. government's Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) undertook one of the largest public investments in applied R&D in U.S. history, entering into thousands of contracts with firms and universities to perform research essential to the war effort. Using data on all OSRD-funded invention, we show that this shock had a formative impact on the U.S. innovation system, catalyzing technology clusters around the country with accompanying increases in high-tech entrepreneurship and employment. These effects continue growing to at least 1970 and appear to be attributable to agglomeration externalities, rather than sustained public R&D investment, which led to widening disparities in inventive output across the country. In the aggregate, wartime R&D permanently changed the trajectory of U.S. innovation in the direction of funded technologies, including electronics and communications

In Zeiten, in denen es immer weniger Zeitzeugen gibt, können ihre zeitgenössischen Ego-Dokumente helfen, die historischen Vorgänge zu verstehen. In diesem Sinne bietet das vorliegende Buch eine intensive Annäherung an die Lebenswelten der Zwangsarbeiter. Denn die Heranziehung von justiziellen Personalakten aus der NS-Zeit sowie der Briefe und Tagebücher der Betroffenen ermöglichte es, die Gefühle und Handlungen aus ihrer Perspektive zu schildern.

    This paper examines the impact of male casualties due to World War II on fertility and female employment in the United States. We rely on the number of casualties at the county-level and use a difference-in-differences strategy. While most counties in the U.S. experienced a Baby Boom following the war, we find that the increase in fertility was lower in high-casualty rate counties than in low-casualty rate counties. Analyzing the channels through which male casualties could have decreased fertility, we provide evidence that county male casualties are positively related to 1950s female employment and household income.

    Under what conditions can legacies of past violence shape political behaviour? We propose a theory of how war victimization defines attitudes over the long run, and how these can be activated by changes in the political environment. We argue that exposure to violence by members of a different ethnic group generates hostility that spills over other outgroups; this latent hostility resonates with nationalist appeals to ingroup (national) identity against non-nationals. As a result, nationalist appeals transform latent attitudes into political support, leading to different behavioural patterns among victimized communities. To test our theory, we use a historical case of indiscriminate violence against civilians by French colonial troops in central Italy during the last phase of World War II. Using data on electoral outcomes and party platforms over the full postwar period from 1948 to 2018, we show that parties which increase the nationalist content of their electoral manifesto gain more votes in formerly victimized communities, compared to otherwise similar communities. We also discuss these dynamics in qualitative case studies of party repositioning, such as the transformation of the regionalist party Northern League into a radical right party with strong nationalist appeals. We show that the results are not driven by pre-war differences in political preferences, or in socio-economic characteristics.

    With 70 million dead, World War II remains the most devastating conflict in history. Of the survivors, millions were displaced, returned maimed from the battlefield, or spent years in captivity. We examine the impact of such wartime experiences on labor market careers and show that they often become apparent only at certain life stages. While war injuries reduced employment in old age, former prisoners of war postponed their retirement. Many displaced workers, particularly women, never returned to employment. These responses are in line with standard life‐cycle theory and thus likely extend to other conflicts.

    Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg findet in der deutschsprachigen Literatur und Literaturwissenschaft eine verstärkte Reflexion auf den Dreißigjährigen Krieg statt, die bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs fortgesetzt wird und sich in den späten 1940er Jahren nochmals intensiviert. Die historischen Zäsuren der beiden Kriege werden parallel gesetzt und die Literatur des Barockzeitalters zur Selbstdeutung wiederentdeckt. Neben heute kanonischen Autoren sind an diesen Rezeptionsprozessen auch seinerzeit viel gelesene, heute aber weitgehend vergessene beteiligt. Damit agiert die Literatur und Literaturwissenschaft des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts etwas aus, das Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts als historiographisches Konzept des ‚Zweiten Dreißigjährigen Krieges‘ (Hans-Ulrich Wehler) bzw. der ‚Weltkriegsepoche‘ (Arno J. Mayer) wiederbegegnet. Mit Beiträgen von Achim Aurnhammer, Victoria Gutsche, Klaus Haberkamm, Wilhelm Kühlmann, Fabian Lampart, Dieter Martin, Christopher Meid, Christian Meierhofer, Philipp Redl, Christoph Schmitt-Maaß, Stefanie Stockhorst, Mario Zanucchi After the First World War the Thirty Years’ War was increasingly reflected by contemporary German literature and criticism. Much influenced by two World Wars the historical analogies become evident, and the literature of the Baroque age is rediscovered for self-interpretation. Next to canonised classics once famous writers, who are now mostly forgotten, were involved. In retrospect, they are particularly significant for understanding the broader reception. Literature and criticism of the early 20th century are framing a key concept that, at the very end of the century, returns as the concept of a ‘Second Thirty Years’ War’ (Hans-Ulrich Wehler) or an ‘era of World War’ (Arno J. Mayer).     This volume is meant to be a retrospective look at the field of Comparative Literature as it has developed in the past two decades, as well as a reflection on its future direction if it is to remain relevant (and innovative) as a field of study. From its inception in the second half of the twentieth century, Comparative Literature in the US has been conceived as a cross-disciplinary, cross-national, and crosscultural enterprise that brings together theoretical developments in the Humanities and Social Sciences to reflect on the most important intellectual and cultural trends from a comparative perspective through the lens of literary studies. Most of the founders of Comparative Literature were distinguished European scholars who sought a safe haven from the ravages of World War II and its aftermath and who, understandably focused on the Western literary, intellectual and cultural tradition, which at the time was in danger of being annihilated by the onslaught of Fascism and Communism. With the advent of the age of globalization the field of Comparative Literature has become increasingly diverse and must, therefore, be reoriented and recognized accordingly.
