    This important new collection explores representations of late seventeenth- through mid-nineteenth-century transatlantic women travelers across a range of historical and literary works. While at one time transatlantic studies concentrated predominantly on men's travels, this volume highlights the resilience of women who ventured voluntarily and by force across the Atlantic-some seeking mobility, adventure, knowledge, wealth, and freedom, and others surviving subjugation, capture, and enslavement. The essays gathered here concern themselves with the fictional and the historical, national and geographic location, racial and ethnic identities, and the configuration of the transatlantic world in increasingly taught texts such as The Female American and The Woman of Colour, as well as less familiar material such as Merian's writing on the insects of Surinam and Falconbridge's travels to Sierra Leone. Intersectional in its approach, and with an afterword by Eve Tavor Bannet, this essential collection will prove indispensable as it provides fresh new perspectives on transatlantic texts and women's travel therein across the long eighteenth century

The book brings together the sensation, mystery, realist and early modernist railway narratives by female and male authors, analysing women's trajectories within and beyond the city and the nation, as urban passengers, travellers, tourists and colonists. In texts by authors such as Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Margaret Oliphant, Rhoda Broughton, Mary Ward, Flora Annie Steel and Mona Caird as well as Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy and Henry James, the ambiguous space of the railway highlights the artificiality of the private/public divide, while giving rise to woman's impulse to traverse boundaries, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. In the novels, short stories in periodicals, news items and commentaries, essays, illustrations and paintings examined, trains become contact zones of multiple encounters, but also battlefields of gender, class and imperial ideology.     "The black and white women travel writers whom Jennifer Bernhardt Steadman investigates in Traveling Economies astonish modern readers with their daring, stamina, and courage. That these women traveled at all is surprising: Nancy Prince spent nearly a decade as an African American member of the Russian Imperial Court; Amy Morris Bradley went to Costa Rica as a governess in hopes of saving her health and finances after years as an impoverished teacher in Maine; and Julia Archibald Holmes carried the banner of dress reform to the heights of Pikes Peak and to the pages of a feminist periodical. Developing the concept of the "ragged edge," Steadman highlights these women's shared experiences of penury, work, and independence. Genteel poverty, black skin, outspoken feminism, or sometimes all three impacted the material conditions of their ragged-edge travel (early muckraking journalist Anne Royall walked until her feet were a bloody mass of blisters). Being on the ragged edge also affected the way they represented themselves and their travels (Mary Ann Shadd Cary presented her outspoken advocacy of black emigration to Canada as appropriately feminine). Frances Wright used her travel writing to imagine the new nation as a potential utopia for women citizens; she paid a high price for daring to try to change the social terrain she crossed. Steadman's interdisciplinary work with archives, newspapers, memoirs, and letters and her thoughtful close readings of the resulting evidence recover these important women's travels and writing and invite us to rethink where and how women went and what they wrote in antebellum America."--EBSCO

Reading Jack Kerouac’s classic On the Road through Virginia Woolf’s canonical A Room of One’s Own , the author of this book examines a genre in North American literature which, despite its popularity, has received little attention in literary and cultural criticism: women’s road narratives. The study shows how women’s literature has inscribed itself into the American discourse of the Whitmanesque “open road”, or, more generally, the “freedom of the road”. Women writers have participated in this powerful American myth, yet at the same time also have rejected that myth as fundamentally based on gendered and racial/ethnic hierarchies and power structures, and modified it in the process of writing back to it. The book analyzes stories about female runaways, outlaws, questers, adventurers, kidnappees, biker chicks, travelling saleswomen, and picaras and makes theoretical observations on the debates regarding discourses of spatiality and mobility—debates which have defined the so-called spatial turn in the humanities. The analytical concept of transdifference is introduced to theorize the dissonant plurality of social and cultural affiliations as well as the narrative tensions produced by such pluralities in order to better understand the textual worlds of women’s multiple belongings as they are present in these writings. Roads of Her Own is thus not only situated in the broader context of a constructivist cultural studies, but also, by discussing narrative mobility under the sign of gender, combines insights from social theory and philosophy, feminist cultural geography, and literary studies.     Examining the representation of women in the spaces of the railway in literature and culture of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this book explores the extraordinary and unprecedented opportunities that the train offered women. An emblem of the conquest of national and imperial space and of the staggering advances of science and technology, the train gave women a taste of its omnipotence, eventually becoming a space of emancipation, transgression, and fear for women. The book brings together the sensation, mystery, realist and early modernist railway narratives by female and male authors, analysing women's trajectories within and beyond the city and the nation, as urban passengers, travellers, tourists and colonists.In texts by authors such as Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Margaret Oliphant, Rhoda Broughton, Mary Ward, Flora Annie Steel and Mona Caird as well as Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy and Henry James, the ambiguous space of the railway highlights the artificiality of the private/public divide, while giving rise to woman's impulse to traverse boundaries, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. In the novels, short stories in periodicals, news items and commentaries, essays, illustrations and paintings examined, trains become contact zones of multiple encounters, but also battlefields of gender, class and imperial ideology.     In the last days of the Scandinavian journey that would become the basis of her great post-Revolutionary travel book, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote, 'I am weary of travelling - yet seem to have no home - no resting place to look to - I am strangely cast off'. From this starting point, Ingrid Horrocks reveals the significance of representations of women wanderers in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, particularly in the work of women writers. She follows gendered, frequently reluctant wanderers beyond travel narratives into poetry, gothic romances, and sentimental novels, and places them within a long history of uses of the more traditional literary figure of the male wanderer. Drawing out the relationship between mobility and affect, and illuminating textual forms of wandering, Horrocks shows how paying attention to the figure of the woman wanderer sheds new light on women and travel, and alters assumptions about mobility's connection with freedom

    This important new collection explores representations of late seventeenth- through mid-nineteenth-century transatlantic women travelers across a range of historical and literary works. While at one time transatlantic studies concentrated predominantly on men's travels, this volume highlights the resilience of women who ventured voluntarily and by force across the Atlantic-some seeking mobility, adventure, knowledge, wealth, and freedom, and others surviving subjugation, capture, and enslavement. The essays gathered here concern themselves with the fictional and the historical, national and geographic location, racial and ethnic identities, and the configuration of the transatlantic world in increasingly taught texts such as The Female American and The Woman of Colour, as well as less familiar material such as Merian's writing on the insects of Surinam and Falconbridge's travels to Sierra Leone. Intersectional in its approach, and with an afterword by Eve Tavor Bannet, this essential collection will prove indispensable as it provides fresh new perspectives on transatlantic texts and women's travel therein across the long eighteenth century

    Im Prozeß ihrer fortschreitenden Literaturfähigkeit traten deutsche Schriftstellerinnen seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert auch auf dem Gebiet der Reisebeschreibung hervor. Unterstützt wurde dies von der Öffnung des Genres für empfindsame oder subjektive Darstellungen. Da Reisen, Schreiben und Publizieren gleichwohl in vieler Hinsicht dem Weiblichkeitsstereotyp widersprach, entwickelte sich für weibliche Reiseschriften ein eigener, geschlechtsspezifischer Regelkodex, der sich neben den Merkmalen der Gattung behauptete, ja diese sogar überlagern konnte. Die Spuren dieses Regelsystems lassen sich in den zeitgenössischen Beurteilungen ebenso sichern wie in den Reisewerken selbst. Nach 1850 führte die geschlechtsbedingte stilistische und inhaltliche Beschränkung zum Trivialitätsverdikt und ließ die ehemals beliebten Schriften in Vergessenheit geraten. Die vorliegende Arbeit etabliert zunächst eine Typologie der Gattung Reisebeschreibung. Im Vergleich mit männlichen Reiseschriftstellern und ausländischen Autorinnen werden dann die sozialgeschichtlichen Reisemöglichkeiten für Frauen, die Produktionsbedingungen, Marktchancen und werkinternen Regelsysteme für weibliche Reiseschriftstellerei in Deutschland untersucht. Fundament der Analyse ist eine um Vollständigkeit bemühte bibliographische Erfassung der weitgehend unbekannten deutsch- und anderssprachigen Werke. Ein bio-bibliographischer Anhang dient der Information über die deutschen Autorinnen The late 18th century saw the emergence of German women writers in the field of travel writing. Underlying their efforts was a gender-specific code of rules that restricted them both stylistically and in terms of subject-matter. The study inquires into the external and internal conditions imposed on travel and travel writing as undertaken by German women writers and points up the very considerable differences between those obtaining for their male counterparts and also for women writers from other countries.     In the last days of the Scandinavian journey that would become the basis of her great post-Revolutionary travel book, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote, 'I am weary of travelling - yet seem to have no home - no resting place to look to - I am strangely cast off'. From this starting point, Ingrid Horrocks reveals the significance of representations of women wanderers in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, particularly in the work of women writers. She follows gendered, frequently reluctant wanderers beyond travel narratives into poetry, gothic romances, and sentimental novels, and places them within a long history of uses of the more traditional literary figure of the male wanderer. Drawing out the relationship between mobility and affect, and illuminating textual forms of wandering, Horrocks shows how paying attention to the figure of the woman wanderer sheds new light on women and travel, and alters assumptions about mobility's connection with freedom

    Examining the representation of women in the spaces of the railway in literature and culture of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this book explores the extraordinary and unprecedented opportunities that the train offered women. An emblem of the conquest of national and imperial space and of the staggering advances of science and technology, the train gave women a taste of its omnipotence, eventually becoming a space of emancipation, transgression, and fear for women. The book brings together the sensation, mystery, realist and early modernist railway narratives by female and male authors, analysing women's trajectories within and beyond the city and the nation, as urban passengers, travellers, tourists and colonists.In texts by authors such as Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Margaret Oliphant, Rhoda Broughton, Mary Ward, Flora Annie Steel and Mona Caird as well as Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy and Henry James, the ambiguous space of the railway highlights the artificiality of the private/public divide, while giving rise to woman's impulse to traverse boundaries, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. In the novels, short stories in periodicals, news items and commentaries, essays, illustrations and paintings examined, trains become contact zones of multiple encounters, but also battlefields of gender, class and imperial ideology.
