    Der Ergebnisbericht ist eine Zusammenfassung der Gesamtergebnisse aus dem Vorhaben "Evaluierung der Bundeswettbewerbe Nachhaltige Tourismusdestinationen 2012/13 und 2016/17 (DTV, BMU, BfN) zur Förderung und Weiterentwicklung nachhaltiger Destinationen in Deutschland“, das von April 2019 bis Februar 2021 durchgeführt wurde. Ziel des Vorhabens war die Evaluation der Zielerreichung und der erzeugten Wirkung der beiden Bundeswettbewerbe sowie ihrer begleitenden Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Auf der Basis der Evaluationsergebnisse und vergleichbarer Wettbewerbe werden Empfehlungen für die Neuausrichtung und Weiterentwicklung der Bundeswettbewerbe abgeleitet. The report is a summary of the overall results from the project "Evaluation of the federal competitions for sustainable tourism destinations 2012/13 and 2016/17 (DTV, BMU, BfN) for the promotion and further development of sustainable destinations in Germany", which ran from April 2019 to February 2021 was carried out. The aim of the project was to evaluate the achievement of objectives and the effects generated by the two national competitions as well as their accompanying public relations work. On the basis of the evaluation results and comparable competitions, recommendations for the realignment and further development of the national competitions are derived.

    Parents make important choices for their children in many areas of life, yet the empirical literature on this topic is scarce. We study parents’ competitiveness choices for their children by combining two large-scale artefactual field experiments with high-quality longitudinal administrative data. We document three main sets of findings. First, parents choose more competition for their sons than daughters. Second, this gender difference can largely be explained by parents’ beliefs about their children’s competitiveness preferences. Third, parents’ choices predict children's later-in-life educational outcomes. Taken together, these findings provide novel evidence on the role of parents in shaping children’s long-term outcomes.

    Die Verbindung zwischen Netzen (Autonomen Systemen) unterschiedlicher Betreiber erfolgt sowohl durch Peering-Vereinbarung als auch über Transit-Verbindungen. Kommerzielle Transitanbieter bieten ihren Kunden Zugriff auf bzw. Erreichbarkeit für das gesamte Internet. Im Gegensatz dazu wird durch Peering nur wechselseitiger Datenaustausch zwischen den Netzen der beteiligten Parteien (und deren dort jeweils angeschlossenen Kunden) gewährt. Um Transitkosten zu vermeiden und/oder die Qualität der Netzzusammenschaltung (Interconnection) durch Peering zu erhöhen, können sich Netzwerkbetreiber sowohl an öffentlichen Internetknotenpunkten, aber auch direkt un-tereinander zusammenschalten (peeren). Mit der Beliebtheit von "Over-the-top"-Diensten im Audio- und Videostreamingbereich erzeugen insbesondere Endkunden einen immer asymmetrischeren Datenfluss zwischen den Netzen ihrer Internet Service Provider und deren Interconnection-Partnern, welche diese Inhalte vornehmlich durchleiten. Mit Hilfe von Content Distribution Net-works (CDNs) werden populäre Inhalte von Diensteanbietern in geografisch verteilten Serverarchitekturen gespeichert und so die Distanz zwischen Endkunden und dem Speicherort der Inhalte minimiert. Damit reduziert sich die bei der Datenübertragung zum Endkunden relevante Übertragungsstrecke, womit eine Vielzahl von (potentiell ausgelasteten) Knotenpunkten und Übertragungswegen vermieden und die Übertragungsqualität erhöht werden kann. Vor dieser Ausgangslage werden dieser Studie zunächst die Prognosen und ökonomischen Schlussfolgerungen der BEREC Studie zur IP-Zusammenschaltung aus 2017 aufgegriffen, validiert und um weitere Untersuchungsgegenstände, insbesondere um Aspekte der Digitalen Souveränität ergänzt. Dabei werden die Markt- und Wettbewerbsentwicklungen der letzten fünf Jahre im Bereich IP-Interconnection aufgearbeitet und die Trends der nächsten Jahre in der Branche identifiziert.

    We exploit a natural experiment to study the extent to which popular attitudes toward trade are driven by economic fundamentals. In 2007, Costa Rica put a free trade agreement (FTA) to a national referendum. With a single question on the ballot, 59% of Costa Rican adult citizens cast a vote on whether they wanted an FTA with the United States to be ratified, or not. We merge disaggregated referendum results with employer-employee data, customs and balance-sheet data, firm-to-firm transactions data, and data on household composition and expenditures. We document that a firm's exposure to the FTA, directly and via input-output linkages, significantly influences the voting behavior of its employees. This effect is greater for voters who are aligned with pro-FTA political candidates. We find that import competition plays a role in explaining votes against openness, and that within-industry heterogeneity is key in explaining votes, as compared with sector-level exposure. We also show that citizens considered the expected decrease in consumer prices when exercising their vote

    Prior research, primarily based on lab experiments, suggests that females might be more averse to competition than males and could be more inclined towards collaboration, instead. Were these findings to generalize to adults across the workforce, there could be profound implications for organizational design and personnel management. We report on a field experiment in which 97,678 adults from a wide range of fields and ages were invited to join a product development opportunity. Individuals were randomly assigned to treatments framing the opportunity as either involving competitive or collaborative interactions with other participants. Among those outside of science, technology, engineering, and math fields (STEM), we find significant gender differences in willingness to participate under competition. Among those in STEM fields, we detect no statistical gender differences. These results and broader patterns documented in the study are consistent with significant heterogeneity in competitiveness across both men and women, with field and career sorting resulting in differences (in gender differences) across fields

    Economists and policy makers have used the increase in the concentration of return on invested capital (ROIC) in publicly-traded US firms over the last decades as evidence for the decline of competitiveness in the broader economy. Principle support for this claim is a graph presented by the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA, 2016) that reproduces data from the McKinsey and Company's book on Corporate Valuation. We demonstrate that the key findings associated with the evolution of the ROIC cannot be broadly reproduced using Compustat data and established accounting measures and calculations. Further, we find that the ad-hoc selection of firms used in the study can result in discarding nearly 90% of the available firm-level data. Rather than rejecting the results of the CEA altogether, we correct their story in its core statement and contribute to it by presenting the full dataset. As the CEA finds an increasing concentration in the upper end of the distribution, we find increasing concentration for low-ROIC firms. The concentration increase for the top 10% of firms that we find is lower than the one presented by the CEA and limited to large firms. The presented results in this paper are satisfyingly robust, regardless of whether we use only 'large firms' or the complete, available sample of data. We conclude that the original story of an increased concentration of ROIC must be handled with care. Drawing macroeconomic conclusions from firm-level data should include all available and relevant information.

    In European men's club football, competitive balance is decreasing, and therefore uncertainty of outcome too. The empirical studies do not give a clear unanimous answer to the question whether this decrease leads to lower utility for the fans, and so to lower welfare, hence this critical review of the literature. Three types of uncertainty of outcome have been distinguished in the literature: short-term, seasonal, and long-term, with possible different dimensions within one type. The paper argues that it is justified to interpret the literature in the following way: a decrease in one or two types of uncertainty of outcome, or a certain more specific dimension, can lead to serious reductions in welfare, while the conclusion may be different for other types or dimensions. Several studies suggest that a decrease in competitive balance has no effect on welfare, or just a small effect, as long as the competitive balance remains above some minimum level (or range) whereas once the competitive balance is below the minimum level, any further decrease in it results in serious reductions in welfare. Taking these and other points into account, the conclusion of the review is that it is highly plausible that the present level of competitive balance is below the welfare-maximising level in most competitions at least, and any further decrease in competitive balance will seriously reduce welfare.

    We argue that inter-jurisdictional competition in a regionally decentralized authoritarian regime distorts local politicians' incentives in resource allocation among firms from their own city and a competing city. We develop a tournament model of project selection that captures the driving forces of local protectionism. The model robustly predicts that the joint presence of regional spillover and the incentive for political competition leads to biased resource allocations against the competing regions. Combining several unique data sets, we test our model predictions in the context of government procurement allocation and firms' equity investment across Chinese cities. We find that, first, when local politicians are in more intensive political competition, they allocate less government procurement contracts to firms in the competing city; second, local firms, especially local SOEs, internalize the local politicians' career concerns and invest less in the competing cities. Our paper provides a political economy explanation for inefficient local protectionism in an autocracy incentivized by tournament-style political competition

    We present a mechanism based on managerial incentives through which common ownership affects product market outcomes. Firm-level variation in common ownership causes variation in managerial incentives and productivity across firms, which leads to intra-industry and intra-firm cross-market variation in prices, output, markups, and market shares that is consistent with empirical evidence. The organizational structure of multiproduct firms and the passivity of common owners determine whether higher prices under common ownership result from higher costs or from higher markups. Using panel regressions and a difference-in-differences design we document that managerial incentives are less performance-sensitive in firms with more common ownership
