    Der Zionismus ist nicht nur eine politische Bewegung, er war als kulturelle Bewegung schon geboren, bevor es den Staat Israel gab. Zentraler Punkt der zionistischen Ideolgie ist die Legende vom "gelobten Land", die sich auf die Thora stützt und durch die zionistische Literatur erfolgreich verbreitet wird. Zwar hat der Imperialismus sich bei allen seinen Eroberungen und Besetzungen auf Legenden gestützt, aber keine hat sich so lange gehalten wie diese, und keine ist vom Westen sogar von Kreisen, die den Imperialismus in anderen Teilen der Welt bekämpften, so bereitwillig aufgenommen worden. Israel hat für den Westen eine Botschaft zu überbringen. Das Bild vom Leiden des jüdischen Volkes ist zum Bild des Leidens schlechthin geworden. Die Botschaft, die die arabische Literatur dagegensetzt, wird vom Westen nur schwer verstanden, weil der gemeinsame Ausgangspunkt fehlt und der Stil zu agitatorisch, zu politisch eingefärbt ist. Zu wenig ist es gelungen, in der arabischen Literatur nicht nur die Sache, sondern auch den arabischen Menschen sichtbar zu machen. (DÜI-Sra)

    The author examines the fact that autobiography and biography are few in number in the Middle East, while they are common in the West. The most obvious explanation for this is, that "the concept of the individual human life as well as the development of that life over the course of the individual life cycle are profoundly different from such conceptions in the West". The absence of historicism (the individual life is not seen in context to history) and the fact, that community is valued over individuality, reduce the propensity to produce autobiographies and biographies. Thus most such works were written either by people from the West or by westernized Middle Easterners. The author names four important biographies of modern Middle Eastern lives, all written by non-Middle Easterners. (DÜI-Mjr)

    The author examines biography as a species of historical investigation - a person's thoughts and actions are seen in the context of his time and place. In traditional Islam biography is unknown. Biographical dictionaries with brief accounts of governors and rulers exist, but they focus on a person's belonging to well-established categories, e.g. Muslim or non-Muslim, they do not pay any attention to personality. To regard a person's life as an evidence of past thought and past activity is a relative new discovery made by Westerners about themselves and their past, called historism. (DÜI-Mjr)
