    Cross-dressing, sexual identity, and the performance of gender are among the most hotly discussed topics in contemporary cultural studies. A vital addition to the growing body of literature, this book is the most in-depth and historically contextual study to date of Shakespeare's uses of the heroine in male disguise—man-playing-woman-playing-man—in all its theatrical and social complexity. Shapiro's study centers on the five plays in which Shakespeare employed the figure of the "female page": The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, and Cymbeline. Combining theater and social history, Shapiro locates Shakespeare's work in relation to controversies over gender roles and cross-dressing in Elizabethan England.

    Come reagiscono Torquato Tasso e Giovan Battista Marino al contesto vigilante e normativo tra Cinque- e Seicento? A partire dal rapporto che i due autori nutrono nei confronti delle norme e delle regole si prendono in considerazione due tattiche evasive pensate per salvaguardare lascivie e incanti nei poemi: da un lato l'allegoria, dall'altro il travestimento. Il percorso di Tasso è evolutivo e la sua opinione cambia in base all'interiorizzazione di leggi e valori che portano a una rivalutazione delle opinioni iniziali, mentre Marino trasgredisce le regole e utilizza elementi tipicamente difensivi - quali l'allegoria - rovesciandoli e inventandone un uso celatamente offensivo. In questo contesto vengono così rivalutate le allegorie paratestuali dell'Adone di Marino, finora mal considerate dalla critica, e viene ripensato il percorso tassiano in un'ottica che vede i due autori non come vittime di un sistema censorio, ma come partecipanti attivi.

    How do Torquato Tasso and Giovan Battista Marino react to the vigilant and normative context between the 16th and 17th centuries? Two evasive tactics designed to safeguard lewdness and enchantment in the poems are considered, starting from the relationship the two authors had with norms and rules: allegory on the one hand, and disguise on the other. Tasso's path is evolutionary and his opinion changes according to the internalisation of laws and values that lead to a re-evaluation of his initial opinions, while Marino transgresses the rules and uses typically defensive elements - such as allegory - overturning them and inventing a concealed offensive use. In this context, the paratextual allegories of Marino's Adonis, hitherto ill-considered by critics, are thus re-evaluated, and the Tasso route is reconsidered from a perspective that sees the two authors not as victims of a censorial system, but as active participants.
