    Globalization and advances in information and communication technologies are reshaping the worlds trading patterns. Today's internationally competitive businesses work through strategic, integrated global networks designed to deliver efficient and high-quality response to demands from anywhere in the world. This trend has given rise to the terms global logistics or supply-chain management. In addition, growing environmental concerns require that logistics should not only be efficient; they should also contribute to sustainable development. How do governments understand the current state of logistics systems? Do we share a vision of desired global logistics networks towards which governments can work? What are the barriers to achieving efficient and sustainable logistics networks? The OECD TRILOG project aimed to provide insights into these key issues through an exchange of experiences relating to freight transport logistics in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and North American regions. This report attempts to identify constraints and address issues common to the three regions, and suggest possible solutions and approaches that could facilitate the development of policies to promote efficient and sustainable international logistics.--Publisher's description

    "During 2004, oil prices reached levels unprecedented in recent years. Though world oil markets remain adequately supplied, high oil prices do reflect increasingly uncertain conditions. Many IEA member countries and non-member countries alike are looking for ways to improve their capability to handle market volatility and possible supply disruptions in the future. This book aims to provide assistance. It provides a new, quantitative assessment of the potential oil savings and costs of rapid oil demand restraint measures for transport. Some measures may make sense under any circumstances; others are primarily useful in emergency situations. All can be implemented on short notice if governments are prepared. The book examines potential approaches for rapid uptake of telecommuting, ecodriving, and car-pooling, among other measures . It also provides methodologies and data that policymakers can use to decide which measures would be best adapted to their national circumstances. This tool box may help countries to complement other measures for coping with supply disruptions, such as use of strategic oil stocks."--publisher summary

    The Round Table evaluated the relevance of research on the wider economic impacts of investments in transport infrastructure for the practice of project appraisal. This paper comprises the Round Table's presentations and discussions. The standard cost-benefit analysis of transport infrastructure investment projects weighs a project's costs against users' benefits. This approach has been challenged on the grounds that it ignores wider economic impacts of such projects. Leading academics and practitioners addressed these concerns and examined a range of potential approaches for evaluating wider impacts. They concluded that for smaller projects, it is better to focus on timely availability of results, even if this means forgoing sophisticated analysis of wider impacts. For larger projects or investment programs, customized analysis of these effects is more easily justifiable. Creating consistent appraisal procedures is a research priority.
