    The book presents an important and well known but so far not described episode in the history of banned books in the communist Poland – the activity of the so-called Tatra climbers. They were students and scholars from Warsaw, who initiated a risky cooperation with the centre of Polish political emigration in Paris – Kultura monthly. Inspired by the Prague Spring they tried to develop cooperation between the students from Eastern Bloc countries, smuggled books through the Polish-Slovak border, and gathered texts critical about communist rulers. After a few months, their activity was stopped by the Polish political police. The monograph shows the circumstances and motivations behind this dangerous activity of young people, traces the police investigation against them, and describes the mock trial in 1970.

    There are currently a significant number of protracted armed conflicts worldwide. Illicit economies and their links to violent actors are frequently cited as reasons for their persistence. Drug cultivation, production, and trafficking in places as diverse as Afghanistan, Colombia, and Myanmar have been garnering attention recently since they can undermine peace processes and contribute toward rising levels of insecurity. Nevertheless, it is particularly difficult to grasp the situation in conflict zones and understand the networks of internal and external actors linked to illicit economies due to the limited information base. This also holds true for the violent conflicts in Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the Central African Republic (CAR) that have been going on for extended periods of time. However, since United Nations (UN) sanctions apply in all three contexts, there are extensive and regularly available sources of information provided by the reports of the UN Panels of Experts that moni­tor sanctions implementation. These investigative teams provide valuable insights into illicit economies in conflict zones and their links to peace and security. Looking at the reports for Mali, the DRC, and CAR from the last five years helps to identify some common patterns that defy simple solutions, but that can also show entry points for action.

    Informal trade continues to thrive between India and Pakistan despite recent measures undertaken by the two countries to normalize trade and reduce transport impediments. This calls for an in-depth analysis of India's informal trade with Pakistan. This study (i) identifies factors determining informal trade, (ii) prepares estimates of India's informal trade with Pakistan (iii) examines the modalities of informal trade (iv) analyzes the transaction cost incurred in trading formally and informally and (v) proposes recommendations needed to shift informal trade to formal channels. The analysis, carried out on the basis of an extensive survey conducted in India and Dubai estimates informal trade to be US$ 4.71 billion. Of this, India's exports to Pakistan are estimated to be USD 3.99 billion and imports from Pakistan USD 0.72 billion. The study concludes that informal traders in India and Pakistan have developed efficient mechanisms for contract enforcement, information flows, risk sharing and risk mitigation. Further, even though the transaction costs of trading in the informal channel are significantly higher than the formal channel, traders prefer to trade through the informal channel since it is more efficient than the formal channel. An important policy implication is that unless the environment of the formal trade improves, informal trade will not only continue to coexist with formal trade, but it will also impact its potential magnitude in the coming years.
