So, wie die Maske das Gesicht verhüllt, so versucht der Beschämte, sich vor dem enthüllenden Blick des Anderen zu verbergen.Ausgehend von der aktuellen psychoanalytischen Scham-Theorie wird hier erstmals gezeigt, wie die spezifische Medialität von Scham und Maske nicht nur die Figuren, sondern auch die ästhetischen Strategien in Text und Film maßgeblich prägt und reflektiert.     Ausgehend vom Konzept des Mangels, der den Menschen grundlegend vom Tier unterscheidet, stellt das Buch dar, wie sich das dem Andern der Sprache ausgelieferte Subjekt gleichwohl orientieren kann. Der Bodenlosigkeit der Sprache stehen Körperbilder gegenüber, deren Ursprung im Andern des Spiegelbildes liegt, in dem sich das werdende Subjekt entdeckt. Seine Reflexion führt es auf seine unsichtbaren und körperlichen Seiten diesseits des Spiegels zurück; sie befähigt es auch zu Kreativität. Dabei fließen Körperbilder (Gestalten, Gesichter, Hände etc.) in verwandelten Formen als Matrix, als Schablone mit in Wahrnehmung, Verhalten, Erkenntnis, Schrift ein: Realität konstituiert sich als eine anthropomorphe. Ein abschließender Teil geht der Frage nach, wie zerstörte Körperbilder vor allem in Psychosen restrukturiert werden können.

    Wer sich aus psychologischer Perspektive für Gefühle interessiert, findet eine Vielzahl ganz heterogener Entwürfe vor, die scheinbar beziehungslos nebeneinander stehen. Wovon also handelt die Wissenschaft, wenn sie sich mit Gefühlen beschäftigt? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, entwickelt Alexander Kochinka systematisch Kriterien, mit denen nicht nur der komplexe Forschungsgegenstand »Gefühl« selbst entfaltet, sondern auch der jeweilige theoretische Zugriff auf dieses Phänomen eingeordnet werden kann. Anschließend werden die Leser, auf diese Weise begrifflich und theoretisch sensibilisiert, mit den Emotionstheorien von Charles Darwin, Wilhelm Wundt und William James bekannt gemacht. Der genaue Blick auch in die Details enthüllt dabei, daß diese »Patriarchen der Psychologiegeschichte« eine ganze Menge mehr zu den Gefühlen zu sagen haben, als ihnen in der gegenwärtigen Debatte zugestanden wird.

    This book offers an in-depth study of the poetics of creative writing as a subject in the dramatically changing context of practice as research, taking into account the importance of the subjectivity of the writer as researcher. It explores creative writing and theory while offering critical antecedents, theoretical directions and creative interchanges. The book narrows the focus on psychoanalysis, particularly with regard to Lacan and creative practice, and demonstrates that creative writing is research in its own right. The poetics at stake neither denotes the study or the techniques of poetry, but rather the means by which writers formulate and discuss attitudes to their work

    During a tumultuous period when financial speculation began rapidly to outpace industrial production and consumption, Victorian financial journalists commonly explained the instability of finance by criticizing its inherent artifice—drawing persistent attention to what they called "fictitious capital." In a shift that naturalized this artifice, this critique of fictitious capital virtually disappeared by the 1860s, replaced by notions of fickle investor psychology and mental equilibrium encapsulated in the fascinating metaphor of "psychic economy."In close rhetorical readings of financial journalism, political economy, and the works of Dickens, Eliot, and Trollope, Kornbluh examines the psychological framing of economics, one of the nineteenth century’s most enduring legacies, reminding us that the current dominant paradigm for understanding financial crisis has a history of its own. She shows how novels illuminate this displacement and ironize ideological metaphors linking psychology and economics, thus demonstrating literature’s unique facility for evaluating ideas in process. Inheritors of this novelistic project, Marx and Freud each advance a critique of psychic economy that refuses to naturalize capitalism

    Why do humans get angry with objects? Why is it that a malfunctioning computer, a broken tool, or a fallen glass causes an outbreak of fury? How is it possible to speak of an inanimate object’s recalcitrance, obstinacy, or even malice? When things assume a will of their own and seem to act out against human desires and wishes rather than disappear into automatic, unconscious functionality, the breakdown is experienced not as something neutral but affectively—as rage or as outbursts of laughter. Such emotions are always psychosocial: public, rhetorically performed, and therefore irreducible to a "private" feeling.By investigating the minutest details of life among dysfunctional household items through the discourses of philosophy and science, as well as in literary works by Laurence Sterne, Jean Paul, Friedrich Theodor Vischer, and Heimito von Doderer, Kreienbrock reconsiders the modern bourgeois poetics that render things the way we know and suffer them
