Up until the late 20th century the Bowery was a notorious place of cheap hotels and bars --New York's infamous skid row, where the city's down-and-out found each other and made do the best they could. Inspired by Lionel Rogosin's classic 1956 film On the Bowery, Ed Grazda?s 'On The Bowery' shows the weathered life and times he encountered on the Bowery in 1971. Perhaps the grittiest part of the city in those years, Grazda captured all the sorrow, hardship, and general bad luck upon the faces of those who called the Bowery their home. The unfiltered and barrierless street view is where Grazda has always been most comfortable shooting, and once again we are the beneficiaries of his intrepid spirit. Captured before gentrification changed the strip and surrounding neighborhood into a tourist destination with museums, upscale retailers, clubs, and fancy restaurants, Grazda provides an important reminder to us all that it was only a few decades ago that the Bowery was a much different scene?and that New York never stops evolving

“A Few Model Palm Trees” is a remake, an interpretation, an appropriation, an adaption of Ed Ruscha’s famous book “A Few Palm Trees” from the 70s. Instead of using real palm trees, Roels makes use of downsized plastic trees that are used in architectural scale models, or that are used as children’s toys.Roels often works with (photographs of) palm trees. All palm trees look alike, and as a symbol the plants are highly recognizable. Historically they’re connected to victory, triumph, endurance, religion, hospitality, wealth, luxury, vacation, paradise but also to colonization, trade and globalization. Palm trees have meaning across cultures. By using photographs of palm trees, Roels makes the idea of copying, mimicking and representation (all part of the very fabric of photography) very tangible. Now he takes on the next step by appropriating Ed Ruscha’s book." -- Publisher's website

"London, once known as the 'Metropole', was the mother city at the heart of a vast empire which at its peak encompassed a quarter of all land on the planet. Its maternal name belied a profoundly hierarchical and unequal relationship with power radiating outwards from the urban heart, and territorial riches feeding back in return. The British Empire has long since collapsed but in its place has risen a new world power; globalised capitalism. London, rebranded an 'investment opportunity', is now a city of continuous demolition, shifting cranes, and glittering new high rises. "Metropole" is a document of the brutal uprooting of London's foundations at the hands of corporate developers, for the benefit of wealthy investors and absentee property speculators. In the wake of aggressive high-end development, genuinely affordable housing has diminished and residents of London are pushed ever further out from the core. Photographed over dozens of winter nights spent wandering through the escalating city, "Metropole" records the dizzying effects of a capital influx on London. The frameworks of luxury residential towers are documented during construction, and the use of double exposures layers building upon building. This proliferating tangle mirrors the threatening scale of alteration in the city. Perspective and orientation are lost in the process, emulating the sense of loss that many Londoners now feel."--Publisher's statement

Nestled within the redwood forests of Monte Rio, northern California, sits Bohemian Grove, a 2,700-acre retreat owned by the exclusive gentlemen's San Francisco Bohemian Club, founded in 1872. Every summer, the retreat is frequented by the political and business elite of the US. Shrouded in secrecy, the activities at the grove have become the subject of countless conspiracy theories and rumours. In 2000, Alex Jones, the founder of infowars, broke into the encampment in an attempt to "expose the new world order" and filmed the Cremation of Care, a theatrical ceremony in which an effigy of the members' "worldly cares" is burnt. Beyond inspiring a bizarre attack on Bohemian Grove by a masked vigilante calling himself the Phantom Patriot in 2002, the release of the video footage, set within an alarmist context, was instrumental in increasing Jones' profile as a far-right activist and subsequently springboarded infowars to become an influential outlet of fake news in recent US politics. In 'Parliament of Owls', Jack Latham investigates the effects that a vacuum of information can cause. Includes 13 transcripts from various sources and an essay by Professor Peter Phillips

Fluvial' is a meditation on the riverside beaches of northern and central inland Portugal.00These are places with which Mouraz has a lifelong relationship and through the images he transmutes personal geography into a fictional atmosphere. And just as the river currents have shaped the natural elements, the passage of time has shaped his gaze. Irony is replaced by a kindness and gentleness towards his equals, and a fascination with form and analogy.00These are the informal moments of family life, of Portuguese society, relaxed, and at leisure. Bodies, tree trunks and river-bed rocks begin to resemble sculptures; human bodies, almost amphibious, are often reduced to the simplest of forms, shaped by light or submerged under a surface of water, with the river bed becoming almost an optical instrument

Foreword /Leigh Davids --South Africa's mixed messages: a short introduction --Introducing the Royal Family --Celine Dion --Cleopatra --Coco --Flavirina --Gabby --Joan Collins --Sulaiga --Netta. "Jan Hoek, fashion designer Duran Lantink and trans sex worker organisation SistaazHood present ‘Sistaaz of the Castle’, an ongoing project about the colorful looks and lives of transgender sex workers that roam the streets of Cape Town, South Africa. Most of the girls are homeless, living under a bridge near Cape Town’s castle. The Sistaaz are eager activists, proud to be trans, proud to be a sex worker, and even prouder of their stunning sense of style. And they want it to be acknowledged. A series of photographs and a fashion collection based on the girls’ appearance and their ability to turn whatever they find into the most exuberant outfits was created. This has already resulted in a fashion show at Amsterdam Fashion Week (a show in Cape Town in still on the wish list) and a photo exhibition in Foam Amsterdam." -- Publisher's website

Paddy Rossmore: Photography' records half a century of the travels made by Lord Rossmore and his companions the Knight of Glin, Desmond FitzGerald, and Mariga Guinness of the Irish Georgian Society. The visual record made by Rossmore provides a unique archive dedicated to preserving the landscape of a bygone era.0With accompanying essays by fine art historian Robert O'Byrne, Rossmore's photographs capture the bittersweet beauty of an uncertain era for Ireland's architectural heritage, with many of his subjects now fallen to ruin, and others enjoying restoration and new life in modernized Ireland

The Settlements' is a topographical portrait of the architecture and landscape of the Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Taken over a period of four years, these black and white photographs reveal the genesis and evolution of the greater settlement project. Focused on the sharp contrast between the medium view from within the settlements and the broader view from their perimeters, the images belie the tense proximity of two peoples living on the same land

Since its publication in 1789, Gilbert White's Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne has inspired generations of artists, writers and naturalists. From Thomas Bewick to Eric Ravilious and Clare Leighton, many artists' depictions of animals, birds and wildlife have illustrated White's celebrated book, together providing a microcosm of natural history illustration from the eighteenth century until today. In Drawn to Nature, Simon Martin has gathered joyful and beautiful images of the extraordinary array of wildlife described by White, providing an insight into the continuing appeal and relevance of the Natural History.0This fascinating account takes us from some of the earliest published depictions of birds and animals, to pioneering nature photography, the revival of wood-engraving in the 1920s and 30s, and responses to White's message about the natural world by contemporary illustrators such as Angie Lewin and Emily Sutton. The book also includes an introduction to the life of Gilbert White by Sir David Attenborough, an essay by Virginia Woolf, poems by modern and contemporary poets, and a jacket design by Mark Hearld.00Exhibition: Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, UK (05.08. - 14.11.2020)

"Occupied is a collection of urinals used and photographed by artist Brian Fouhy. Often unnoticed, Fouhy hopes to draw attention to the beautiful, odd, and sometimes humorous forms urinals can take. By including information surrounding the use of each urinal, such as the meal eaten in a restaurant, the weather conditions at the time, or the distance from relevant points of interest; Fouhy adds another layer to the experience beyond just a standard visit to the loo. With a nod to Duchamp and the ready-made movement, and full of frivolous whimsy, this book takes a look behind the closed doors of bathrooms and showcases these unusual objects that perform a very necessary task. The second book from Fouhy, this collection of photography maintains his distinct observational style" -- publisher's website

Minneapolis-based photographer R.J. Kern presents as his subjects Minnesota 4-H members posing with their farm animals. Each one spent a year raising an animal, which they then entered into a 4-H competition. Kern first photographed them in 2016, and none of the children who sat for him succeeded in winning an award, despite the obvious care they had given to their animals. The formal qualities of Kern's lighting and setting endow these young people with a gravitas beyond their years, revealing self-directed dedication in some, and in others, perhaps, the pressures of traditions imposed upon them. These portraits capture a certain America, a rural world and a time in life when the layered emotions of youth are laid bare. Four years later, in 2020, Kern returned to photograph and interview his young subjects. The new images are poignant when juxtaposed with the originals, tapping into the mindset of America's agricultural youth. The diptychs of the children are punctuated by landscapes of the farms where these children have grown up. As he took the second group of photographs, Kern inquired about what his young subjects had carried forward from their previous experience. What were their thoughts, their advice, their dreams and their goals for the future? How do they fit in future agricultural America?--From statement at Amazon.com
